Kazakhstan's authoritarian leader Nazarbayev renames capital city after himself

There are few moves an autocrat can execute to appear even more ridiculous to the civilised regions which have electoral systems that make it possible to elect a new leader, although this system doesn't imply an actual political change or improvements in society or economy. But how the hell does one imagine that it would maintain one's legacy far beyond one's resignation either by decision or death? This is so stupid, one might send him a doctor to check if everything is still fine with him...

In the end, Kazakhstan is just another weak country which should have never become a country on its own. It has got nothing to share with the global market, nothing but oil, which will run out in the near or far future, and which is despised already, despite the odds. It should've stayed a part of Russia, so that there'll be more support for its people. Argh...

Russian physicist and Nobel laureate Zhores Alferov dies age 88

Alferov shared the nearly $1 million award, which recognized his research work in the 1970s in information technology which paved the way for computers, CD players and mobile telephones, with two U.S. scientists Herbert Kroemer and Jack Kilby.

Alferov was named after a French socialist, Jean Jaurès, while his older brother was named Marx after Karl Marx, a German philosopher and socialist revolutionary. Marx Alferov was killed during World War Two.

“Knowledge is power, but power must be based on knowledge,” he said.

Facebook voids accounts during Moldovan election due to danger of fake news

Facebook said it dismantled scores of pages and accounts designed to look like independent opinion pages and to impersonate a local fact-checking organisation ahead of Moldova’s elections later this month.

The government said it welcomed any initiative to combat “fake news”, saying it did not check the private accounts of its more than 200,000 state employees.

Facebook stepped up efforts to combat disinformation, including accounts in Russia, Iran and Indonesia, over the last year after coming under public scrutiny for not doing enough to stem the spread extremism and propaganda online.

30th anniversary of Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan

"I was in grade six and everything changed overnight, our school, our neighbourhood. The Soviets hadn't just invaded the country, they invaded our culture and religion too," he recalled.

"In the end, after nine years of fighting, we won. We defeated the Soviets, with few resources. And today, we celebrate that victory of Islam against the communists," he added with pride.

The nine-year-long Afghan war was too costly for the Soviet Union. An estimated 15,000 Soviet troops lost their lives, with more than twice that wounded.

Finnish volunteers supported Waffen-SS

“The sub-units and men of SS-Division Wiking engaged during the march into the Soviet Union and the drive through Ukraine and the Caucasus were involved in numerous atrocities,” the report, made public on Friday, relates.

A total of 1,408 Finns volunteered in the Waffen-SS from 1941 to 1943. They served in the well-armed 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking, one of the 38 divisions of the Waffen-SS distinguished by its complement of volunteer recruits from an assortment of northern European nations stretching from Estonia to Belgium and including the Scandinavian countries.

Together with all the information you can find in famous historian Raul Hilberg's dissertation, it should finally be clear that the Germans were not the only ones guilty in the atrocious genocide committed against Jews and other minorities. To only bash the Germans would be too simple-minded.

Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin denies existence of mercenary group Wagner

Wagner’s involvement in Syria was first reported in 2017 by Denis Korotkov for the Russian investigative website Fontaka. Kortokov reported that Russian mercenaries first began operating in Syria under the Wagner banner in 2015.

_Sources told The Bell that Prigozhin had a personal relationship with Putin but was not in his inner circle nor, at the time, as publicly visible as other Putin confidants.

#Prigozhin responded by denying the existence of Wagner Group, telling The Bell the information had been provided through the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in collaboration with Korotkov – who, he said, was reportedly fired from “Fontanka” for publishing unverified information.
