TX, TN, AZ turn towards further voting restrictions after surge in Democratic voters
In Texas, state lawmakers are considering adding criminal penalties for people who improperly fill out voter registration forms. Arizona Republicans are proposing new voting rules that could make it more complicated to cast an early ballot. In Tennessee, GOP lawmakers are considering a bill that would fine groups involved in voter registration drives that submit incomplete forms. This is many Republicans' exact comprehension of how Democracy works: When the opposite side experiences a surge in votes, restrict their voters' rights to vote, so that they will improbably be capable of filling out a ballot correctly. Then, you are going to see your party winning in the next election. It might be autocratic and highly unconstitutional, but who cares when you're ruling?
Voting groups in the state say they are concerned this effort could result in jail time for people who don't properly fill out their voter registration forms. Currently, providing false information on an application is a misdemeanor.Ending up in jail for incorrectly filling out your ballot, even inadvertently. This is causing major paranoia over voters' heads. Does this apply for the country that was founded on the belief of freedom for all?
The measure, which already passed in the state's House, is backed by Goins. It proposes fines of up to $10,000 for groups that pay people and that submit more than 500 incomplete forms, with lower penalties for fewer incomplete registration forms.Holy...

Man beats up transgender woman in broad daylight, is arrested
The attack happened Friday at the Royal Crest apartment complex on Wilhurt Avenue in south Dallas. The suspects in the attack allegedly used homophobic slurs during the assault, according to police.
Towards the end of the video, several women could be seen carrying the victim and loading her into a car. Police say they received a call about the victim at around 11:20 p.m. at a local hospital.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings addressed the attack, saying “I am extremely angry about what appears to be mob violence against this woman… those who did this do not represent how Dallasites feel about our thriving LGBTQ community. We will not stand for his kind of behavior.”

17-year old asks presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke to accompany her on her prom, he asks her to accompany her to his Iowa caucus
"It’s OK if you say no, but will you go to prom with me?" the 17-year-old high school senior asked Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke at a rally Thursday evening in Sioux City. This probably was one of the most romantic offers he ever made to a woman in his life. I'm sure the other ones in the crowd immediately blushed, followed by a heat-up face out of jealousy because they didn't have the chance to caucus for this sonnyboy from Texas.
"But somebody told me about your sign, so we came up with a counter-proposal," O'Rourke continued, lifting a white sign scrawled with blue marker.
"Will you caucus for me?" he asked Campbell as the crowd laughed.

Largest raid in a decade leads to deainment of more than 280 illegal workers
ICE's Homeland Security Investigations division received tips that the company mave have knowingly hired undocumented immigrants and that several workers were using fraudulent identification documents, said Katrina Berger, Special Agent in Charge in HSI's Dallas office.I'm sure the country's economy is going to prosper from it, because to swiftly remove 280 workers from their employing companies don't have any slight impact at all.
Federal hiring laws require that employers have new hires fill out I-9 forms. The laws perform “necessary and common sense functions,” Berger said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.Understandable, of course. But how sure is it to know that these people will receive a legal working permission to stay in their companies. Who ensures that these people will still be hired by their former employers after they have received their working permission, therefore have to be paid a decent wage from this point on? I don't want to promote illegal work for less than the minimum wage, but I am not sure how this is going to proceed after this raid, whether this will have a negaitve impact for the workers themselves. I mean, they could now slide directly into a vicious circle in which they will not be supported by the same people who drove them out of their work.
“They ensure U.S. citizens and legal U.S. residents are hired for jobs in the U.S.,” Berger said. “They also ensure that illegal workers are not preyed upon or paid less than the going wage or otherwise coerced or cheated or subjected to unsafe working conditions without any means of complaint.”

Abolish the police
San Antonio police officer who was fired after colleagues accused him of trying to give a homeless man a sandwich containing dog feces has won his appeal but hasn't been reinstated.SOURCE
An arbitrator this month overturned Matthew Luckhurst's dismissal because he wasn't punished within the required 180 days of the alleged incident.
Officers reported the dog feces incident happened May 6, 2016, while Luckhurst was on bicycle patrol. He was notified of his indefinite suspension Oct. 28, 2016.

There are people
(I already thought that we had this debate about Nazis being actually left-wingers because it is called National Socialists. Even German poltiicians who, by their age (speaking of age and senilitiy), become more and more demented, made the same claim about this determining predicate in the end. It's socialism, but with a very nationalist scent. Just saying: There's nothing socialist about deporting people for relating to an ethnic, religious or whatever minority and murdering them like vermits. This is racist, discriminating, a crima against humanity. Something only the wrost scum in the world is capable of doing without having a very bad conscience about. Now, the Socialists are nothing like this, they are empathic and objected to reaching the best for all of the poeple (excluding fascists). How would murdering almost half of them accomplish this goal? The answer: It doesn't. Period.)
Barr’s bombshell announcement led to Brooks’ outburst, which in turn led to discussion about whether socialists are Nazis because they both use the word “socialist” in their title. He actually quotes from Hitler's infamous pamphlet but claims that the Democrats were the actual fascists? Dude, seriously... I'm planning on reading the book to say I have read it, but I would never quote any single line from this book, no matter how desperate I was. There is a certain intonation when quoting from certain sources, and you should mind this as a public personality...
_ Brooks said in his floor speech Monday. Brooks quoted from Adolf Hitler's book "Mein Kampf" about the use of the "big lie" tactic to dominate political struggles, and the Alabama Republican claimed that's what Democrats did to Drumpf over the Russia allegations._
"Concentration camps were built by private firms who submitted the low bid," Nadler said. "It was in no sense a socialist economy or a socialist ideology. You shouldn’t confuse it by absolutely objectively false invoking of Nazis."It's true, great German companies and concerns employed the innocent inmates in the camps. The pharmaceutical company Bayer, the IG Farben, Siemens, etc... There's nothing less socialist than introducing the private market to incarceration and murdering camps so that they get cheap employees who will never see the light of day again. This is... Ugh, screw it. These so-called Conservatives are all piles of pure shit.

San Antonio City Council bans Chick-Fil-A on airport, enforces backlash from GOP Sen. Ted Cruz
"Ridiculous," Cruz tweeted Friday, with a link to a story about the vote. "The details of this story are even worse," he followed up Saturday, tweeting a link to another story. "San Antonio City Council voted to ban @ChickfilA from the airport bc the company gave to...the Fellowship of Christian Athletes & the Salvation Army?!?
After council members Roberto Treviño and Manny Peláez voiced concerns about the eatery's inclusion at the airport because of its anti-LGBT reputation, the council voted to reject the restaurant under a deal approved Thursday.
I guess they talking about this donation.
In a statement Saturday, Chik-fil-A said that the press release put out by the council member "was the first we heard of his motion and its approval" by the council.

Native inmates won lawsuit to grow their hair long due to spiritual beliefs
The trio of long-time prisoners at the McConnell Unit sued the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in federal court, arguing that their Native American spiritual beliefs regard hair as an extension of the soul, something to be cut only when in mourning. The prison system’s rules requiring men to keep short hair or face disciplinary consequences, the inmates and their attorneys argued, were an unfair violation of religious freedom.
Even though female prisoners are allowed to have long hair, attorneys for the state claimed that letting men do the same would cost too much money to police, that prisoners would get too hot in uncooled facilities, that it would make identifying inmates harder and that it could increase the number of inmate suicides.
I don't get the last argument. Do they beleive that they could use their hair as a noose, to strangle themselves to death? Or how do they explain this argument?
“Although both male and female offenders have been caught with all types of contraband, the types of contraband that female offenders are most commonly caught with is cosmetics,” the state wrote in court filings. “Male offenders are much more likely to smuggle contraband that is dangerous, such as cellphones, drugs, and sharpened weapons intended for stabbing.”

Presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke (D - TX) raises 6.1 mn dollars overnight
“Six million bucks overnight is impressive and anyone who says otherwise doesn’t understand the game,” said Kirk Wagar, a former top Barack Obama donor who is backing Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.). “It’s not the same as when Jeb Bush did it, where he had everyone lined up when they all donated. This guy, as far as I know, didn’t make a bunch of calls. Didn’t have a bunch of people that were pounding people."
“He had to raise more than everyone to continue his momentum. He did. Otherwise, they would have said people gave against Ted Cruz, not for Beto,” said Michael O’Neil, a former Midwest finance director for the Obama campaign. “It is clear, donors were excited to invest in Beto.”
O’Rourke’s campaign is still without a manager and was scrambling to staff up in early primary states. O’Rourke is expected to remain on the road campaigning before returning to his home in El Paso, Texas, for a March 30 rally.

Does Beto O'Rourke (D - TX) back Medicare For All?
This week, O'Rourke again moved away from full single-payer health care, saying he supports giving people the option to buy into Medicare. That's far from the approach being pushed by 2020 rival and progressive icon Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who would mandate Medicare for everyone and abolish employer-sponsored coverage.
But more establishment Democrats think it is a smarter strategy politically to allow people to keep their employer-sponsored coverage if they like it rather than mandating an end to it.
To leave people a choice between employer-sponsored coverage and a Medicare For All might help fishing for votes on both sides of the river. I guess this is the right plan, all in all. Why upset the Republicans uselessly? For what?
“He is saying he has natural gifts as a political communicator, and believes he should put them to use for the purpose of beating Donald Drumpf and otherwise making the world a better place,” Chait wrote about O'Rourke. “This is a good reason to run for the presidency!”

On O'Rourke's adolescent shennanigans, and his campaign
O’Rourke’s remarks followed a report in Reuters that O’Rourke, as a young member of the computer hacking group Cult of the Dead Cow, wrote an online article about how society could work without money and, in a more disturbing missive, about killing children.
For what it's worth, the latter one is quite edgy.
The report, an excerpt from a forthcoming book about Cult of the Dead Cow, came as O’Rourke pushed through the second day of his presidential campaign in Iowa. He declined to reveal how much money his campaign raised in its first 24 hours, a standard marker of early support in the presidential race.
O'Rourke touched off a frenzied push to raise money online when he announced his candidacy on Thursday. It is unclear when he will release his initial fundraising figures, if at all, or whether he will wait for federal filing deadlines. The candidate was racing between events in eastern Iowa on Friday and was expected to remain in the state the next day.

On Beto O'Rourke's (D - TX) run for president
He has political celebrity after his stronger-than-expected challenge to Sen. Ted Cruz in the midterms. He has a devoted base of fans and network of small donors that would make him instantly competitive. He is already better known and better liked than a number of national Democrats who have been running for weeks. And in preparation for his launch, he reportedly beefed up his already valuable email list, lined up potential campaign hires, and has planned a multiday swing through Iowa this weekend.
It’s possible that he’d be able to ride to the nomination on the force of his personality alone—it’s gotten him this far—but that would be a particular shame considering he’ll face one of the deepest and most diverse primary fields. If Democrats are in the market for soaring rhetoric about bridging the partisan divide, they can get that from Joe Biden, Cory Booker, or Amy Klobuchar—all of whom can offer their own specific cases for what that bipartisanship can produce, unlike O’Rourke.
There’s nothing special about O’Rourke’s dream to heal the partisan divide in this country when he can’t explain how he’ll do it. Because as exciting as his bid to take down Cruz was, it also showed the limits of bipartisanship for bipartisanship’s sake.

Is this handsome prick Beto O'Rourke finally running for president?
It's been 10 days since O'Rourke said publicly that he's made a decision about his political future, but he told reporters on Saturday that he wanted to reveal "it the right way and tell everyone at the same time."
"Everything has skyrocketed. People are sensing that something is coming," said Nate Lerner, the co-founder of Draft Beto, which is trying to push O'Rourke into the 2020 race. "We're in the eye of the storm now."
The storm of uncertainty whether he's going to run or not?
Meanwhile, O'Rourke has begun popping up in public — everything from a Metallica concert to a rally to protest President Donald Drumpf's recent visit to O’Rourke’s hometown of El Paso.

On death sentences and the ethics of executing murderers who have lost memory about their deeds
Billie Wayne Coble received lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville for the August 1989 shooting deaths of Robert and Zelda Vicha and their son, Bobby Vicha, at separate homes in Axtell, northeast of Waco.
In Coble’s clemency petition to the Board of Pardons and Paroles, Ellis said his client suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from his time as a Marine during the Vietnam War and was convicted, in part, due to misleading testimony from two prosecution expert witnesses on whether he would be a future danger.
“Every time I run into somebody that knew (his father and grandparents), it’s a good feeling. And when I hear stories about them, it still makes it feel like they’re kinda still here,” Vicha said.
Vernon Madison murdered an Alabama police officer in 1985. After several mistrials on constitutional grounds, he was convicted in 1998 and pursued federal habeas relief until 2015. Meanwhile, Madison’s health collapsed. After a series of strokes, he is now unable to walk, and is also incontinent and legally blind. He cannot recite the alphabet or rephrase a simple sentence. Perhaps most important legally, he can no longer remember the crime he committed.
What matters, Kagan wrote, is whether the prisoner has a “rational understanding” of what is happening to him and why, “not whether he has any particular memory or any particular mental illness.”
The Madison dissent says that Madison should face execution because the questions presented in his petition to the Court don’t meet Alito’s standards. As a reason for signing a death warrant, that seems—to be charitable—a bit strained. That Thomas and Gorsuch joined such an opinion is also troubling.

Apple has confirmed its plans to close retail stores in the Eastern District of Texas — a move that will allow the company to better protect itself from patent infringement lawsuits, according to Apple news sites 9to5Mac and MacRumors, which broke the news of the stores’ closures. Apple says that the impacted retail employees will be offered new jobs with the company as a result of these changes.
The company will shut down its Apple Willow Bend store in Plano, Texas as well as its Apple Stonebriar store in Frisco, Texas, MacRumors reported, and Apple confirmed. These stores will permanently close up shop on Friday, April 12. Customers in the region will instead be served by a new Apple store located at the Galleria Dallas Shopping Mall, which is expected to open April 13.
Apple did not comment on the stores’ dates of closure or the new store’s opening.
However, it’s common for Apple to leave little downtown during retail stores transitions — though most closures are related to renovations or other reasons that aren’t about trying to escape patent lawsuits.
The Eastern District of Texas had become a popular place for patent trolls to file their lawsuits, though a more recent Supreme Court ruling has attempted to crack down on the practice. The court ruled that patent holders could no longer choose where to file.
Apple has had to make big payouts to patent trolls in recent years: $625.6 million to patent holding firm VirnetX in 2016 over protocol patents; VirnetX won $368 million from Apple in 2013; and more recently $502.6 million over four communication patents.
VirnetX tends to be referred to as a “patent troll” because it makes most of its revenue by suing tech companies. In addition to Apple, it sued Microsoft over patents in Skype and has been in litigation with Cisco. Its cases and subsequent wins are often held up as another example of how patent law in the U.S. is in need of reform.
The Apple store closures could have had a notable impact on area jobs, had Apple not offered new positions to its retail staff.
Apple today employs 1,000 people in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which has been an increase of 33 percent in the past five years.
The company also recently invested almost $30 million in its Dallas area stores.
Outside the Dallas metro area, Apple is also investing in Texas with its $1 billion for the new campus in Austin, which will accommodate an additional 5,000 employees on top of the 6,200 already in the area.
A rep for Apple confirmed the stores’ closures in a statement, but wouldn’t comment on the company’s reasoning:
We’re making a major investment in our stores in Texas, including significant upgrades to NorthPark Center, Southlake and Knox Street. With a new Dallas store coming to the Dallas Galleria this April, we’ve made the decision to consolidate stores and close Apple Stonebriar and Apple Willow Bend. All employees from those stores will be offered positions at the new Dallas store or other Apple locations.

Apple plans to close both of its retail stores within the Eastern District of Texas in a few months from now in an effort to protect itself from patent trolls, according to five sources familiar with the matter.
Apple Willow Bend in Plano, Texas and Apple Stonebriar in Frisco, Texas, both located in the northern suburbs of Dallas, are expected to permanently close in mid April. One source said each storeʼs final day of business will be Friday, April 12. Employees were briefed about the plans earlier this week.
To continue to serve the region, Apple plans to open a new store at the Galleria Dallas shopping mall in Dallas, just south of the Eastern District of Texas border. One source said the store will open Saturday, April 13.
A rough visualization of Appleʼs retail stores in the Eastern District of Texas and its upcoming Galleria Dallas store
The plans are significant, as U.S. law states that patent infringement lawsuits may be filed "where the defendant has committed acts of infringement and has a regular and established place of business." By closing its stores in Eastern Texas, Apple is ending its established place of business in the district.
Residency is also a factor in determining the applicable venue of a patent infringement lawsuit, but in May 2017, the Supreme Court shifted precedent by ruling that a U.S. corporation resides only in its state of incorporation. Apple is incorporated in California, not Texas, satisfying this clause.
The Eastern District of Texas has been a hotbed for patent litigation over the past few decades due to well-established rules for patent infringement cases, experienced judges, lower probability of cases being transferred to another district, and quicker jury verdicts, according to a SMU Dedman School of Law paper.
Patent infringement lawsuits against Apple will likely shift to U.S. district courts in Northern California and Delaware.
Fortunately, weʼre hearing that the plans, while inconvenient, are not too detrimental for employees. One source said Apple has offered employees opportunities to transfer to other stores, work from home for AppleCare, or severance.
Apple has yet to publicly announce the plans. We reached out to Apple for comment late Thursday but have yet to hear back.

Police will end no-knock warrants after deadly raid
"The no-knock warrants are going to go away like leaded gasoline in this city," Acevedo said at a community meeting on Monday, according to the Associated Press. He said officers will need to request a special exemption from his office to conduct a no-knock raid.
So, they will not go away, because all the police officers will require are special exemptions?
"What charge is going to be presented will be based on the evidence and the evidence is still being collected," according to KPRC.
Goines was shot and wounded in the raid. His attorney, Nicole DeBorde, told KPRC that she believes Goines is "innocent of any crime," and criticized comments by Acevedo about the case.

Study message in a bottle spot on an island near Texas
Through the scuffed glass, they could make out a yellowing piece of paper—almost the color of the sand. It was wound into a tight scroll, and it bore an instruction scribbled in big, capital letters: “BREAK BOTTLE.”
Not quite. When they liberated the paper and unrolled it, they discovered that it was a postcard—still nice and dry—to be filled it out and mailed back to the U. S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. Whoever found the bottle was supposed to jot down the date and place they’d encountered it, because the office was trying to track the effect of surface currents on young shrimp moving from “offshore spawning grounds to inshore nursery grounds.” Anyone who returned the postcard would receive 50 cents for their trouble.
