Windows 10 May 2019 update blocked for anyone using USB or SD storage | Ars Technica

While it's not officially out yet, the Windows 10 May 2019 update is available to Windows Insiders on the Release Preview distribution channel (and also to MSDN subscribers). So anyone who wants to get a head start on the next major iteration of Windows 10 can do so right now—unless they have USB storage connected to their PC.

Scientists create decoder to turn brain activity into speech

Scientists have developed a decoder that can translate brain activity directly into speech.
In future the brain-machine interface could restore speech to people who have lost their voice through paralysis and conditions such as throat cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson’s disease.
Of course, this won't be put to any kind of wrong use at any time in the future...

How to Uninstall Windows 10 Updates When the PC Is Not Booting Up | MakeTechEasier

Windows 10 updates itself automatically. For the most part, the updates won’t cause any problems. However, from time to time the update may contain bugs that can make your system unbootable. Generally, in those situations, you are forced to use the System Restore tool. However, the System Restore feature is disabled by default. Unless you manually enable the feature, there is no way you can restore the system to a known good state.

5G:Swiss Telcos Ignore Official Laws and Launch 5G; Rule Of Law Under Attack....
In the past month, official resolutions against 5G have been adopted by the cantons of Geneva, Vaud, Jura and Neuchâtel in Switzerland. These are the first four Swiss regions to pass ordinances against 5G installation (see chart below), comprising 1.5 million people (18.1% of national population).
Despite that, the majority state-owned Swisscom defied these laws on April 17, when they activated 5G stations in 102 locations in Switzerland, including Basel, Bern, Chur, Davos, Geneva, Lausanne (Vaud) and Zurich. They did so by upgrading existing antennas installed for previous generations of wireless technology.

Ex-student records himself using USB Killer to fry college computers....A USB Killer isn’t your granddad’s USB thumb drive. It is an adapted device that can fry an entire computer. Instead of a flash memory chip, its innards contain capacitors and a DC-DC converter that alters the voltage level of a direct current. This is a deadly combination for your average USB port, along with anything attached to it.

This article mostly focuses on nature of Boeing MAX crashes. However it brings attention to much wider systemic problems that touch our daily life for a while now as more and more things around us become "smart".

  • Manufacturers no longer strive to get things they produce right before they ship them. Why bother when everything is computer controlled and minor imperfections (like smartphone battery wearing too fast or airplane prone to stall) can be masked with software update later and no one will notice?
  • When everything is smart, it also becomes complex. When it becomes too complex no one really knows how it works under the hood.

How to Schedule Emails in Gmail | Make Tech Easier

Email scheduling is a useful tool for pre-writing emails you know you’ll want to send at a specific time. By scheduling emails, you can be sure the greatest number of recipients will open the email by only sending at peak times. It’s especially useful if you want to send emails to a large number of clients but want to space the messages out to avoid pummeling a server. Emails can be scheduled for an arbitrary time and date in the future. When you schedule emails in Gmail, they will sit in a special section of your outbox until they are ready to be sent.

Teens 'not damaged by screen time', study finds - real point is there is little evidence of any link

There is little evidence of a link between the amount of time teenagers spend on devices and their general wellbeing, a study has suggested. It counters claims that teenagers' mental and physical health could be damaged by excessive screen time.

Even just before bedtime, being online, gaming or watching TV is not damaging to young people's mental health, study authors said.

They questioned the methodology of previous studies.

"While psychological science can be a powerful tool for understanding the link between screen use and adolescent wellbeing, it still routinely fails to supply stakeholders and the public with high-quality, transparent and objective investigations into growing concerns about digital technologies," said Professor Andrew Przybylski, Director of Research at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) and co-author of the study.

The Oxford University study used data from three countries - the UK, US and Ireland - and 17,000 adolescents, and used both self-reporting and time-diary techniques (which ask teens to record what they are doing at specifi... show more

Google Chrome is getting a reader mode on desktop | The Verge

The desktop version of Google Chrome’s browser is getting a reader mode, which can be used to strip out a page’s unnecessary background clutter to make an article easier to read. ZDNet notes that the feature launched today in Chrome’s experimental Canary release, and it should make its way to more stable versions of the browser in the future.
Just when you decide not to use Chrome, it get a Reader mode. Oh, wait...
Reader modes have become a standard browser feature. Safari added its reader mode in 2010, Firefox added one in 2017, and Microsoft’s Edge browser has had one since at least 2015. All three allow you to change the color of the background of the page and adjust the font size to whatever is most comfortable to read.

Hi @Dhan Hurley this sounds really interesting. As you mentioned it provides a 5 base logic compared to our current 2 base logic. I don't know much about that topic, but I read an article about a Chinese team who built a quantic computer that outperforms all we know currently. If I remember well it was able to provide 3 base logic. I assume even on a 2 base logic, a quantic technology would be faster right? What would be the benefit of an analogic solution like this?

How to install Nextcloud on Raspberry Pi to run your own private cloud-based file sharing, calendaring, notes, etc

NextCloud is a great Dropbox replacement and I use it daily for syncing my notes, calendar, files, etc between my various computers and my phone. I manage and control that data myself. A Raspberry Pi based version means you could test it out at home or even configure it for remote access and run it from home with zero external hosting costs.

A Pi's SD card though may be a bit weak to support lots of long term reading and writing so you may want to hook up an external drive to it.

See how to set it up at https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-linux-tips/install-nextcloud-on-raspberry-pi/

Inverse-designed metastructures that solve equations....Signal processing of light waves can be used to represent certain mathematical functions and to perform computational tasks on signals or images in an analog fashion. Such processing typically requires complex systems of bulk optical elements such as lenses, filters, and mirrors. Mohammadi Estakhri et al. demonstrate that specially designed nanophotonic structures can take input waveforms encoded as complex mathematical functions, manipulate them, and provide an output that is the integral of the functions. The results, demonstrated for microwaves, provide a route to develop chip-based analog optical computers and computing elements.
Metastructures hold the potential to bring a new twist to the field of spatial-domain optical analog computing: migrating from free-space and bulky systems into conceptually wavelength-sized elements. We introduce a metamaterial platform capable of

FDA Fluoride Proposal Raises Neurotoxicity Concerns in Media....On Tuesday, the S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release announcing a new proposal to lower the maximum level of fluoride that can be added to bottled water, from 0.8 ppm down to 0.7 ppm. The reduction of 0.1 ppm is FDA’s effort to help reduce rampant dental fluorosis. This change does not lower the allowable level of naturally occurring fluoride in bottled water.
