What do you think when you hear USSR?

Totalitarian socialism? "Prison of nations"? Oppression? "Red Scare"? Cold war? Nuclear standoff? Waging hybrid wars before it became mainstream?

There was something else too. You can call it propaganda or utopia, I call it a dream. Friendship of peoples. It was one of core ideas of Soviet socialism and it was everywhere. Yes, reality didn't quite reflect it (although I can say now reality is even worse in that regard) but it was something everything was supposed to rotate around. Now we rarely talk about it. We talk about #tolerance, #acceptance, support, #multiculturalism - and these things are all fine but not quite... show more

It seems leftists are really having a fit over this whole Alabama abortion thing.

I find the whole situation amusing on several levels. There is the usual surface level fake outrage and internet virtue signaling, the Alyssa Milano led "sex strike" is an especially comical example of this.

Yet there is also this whole meta level to it that I see, a kind of reversal. What are the long term implications of a conservative led ban on abortions? (Well, one would hope that it would force women to be more careful, but that doesn't seem very likely to me.) I would expect that the amount of unwanted births would increase. Resulting in more delinquency, crime, more welfare dependents and more Democrat voters. It seems to me the long term effects of this very conservative type legislation would ultimately lead to a decline of conservatism in the long run. It's a bit ironic isn't it? I often disagree with my anarchist friends here about the use of #violence. I think it may be because of the #USA mentality (the use of force and violence to solve any problem, even wars and violence itself) leaking and infecting the rest of the world via globalization, media, etc. Are there still any anarcho-pacifists at Diaspora?

Tolstoy argued that anarchism must be nonviolent since it is, by definition, opposition to coercion and force, and that since the state is inherently violent, meaningful pacifism must likewise be anarchistic.

Talkin' 'bout Socialism: EPA intends to remove ban on Asbestos

Asbestos is a group of fibrous, heat-resistant minerals used in manufactured goods, particularly building materials. According to the World Health Organization, "All types of asbestos cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, cancer of the larynx and ovary, and asbestosis (fibrosis of the lungs)."
In regards to my headline: Asbestos, which was produced in the then-Soviet town of Asbest, was mainly used as a means of buildings, in the GDR too. We still have an entire sector of removal of Asbestos in older buildings. It's a risky job that includes lengthy pauses because you cannot work too long in removing this poisonous material, because it could assail your lungs. Now imagine that we would again use this toxic trash in our buildings because the lobby-stricken EPA lowered regulations on it.
"The sheer number of lives cut short and families destroyed from asbestos exposure demand nothing less than an outright ban," Benesh said in a statement. "I can't think of an easier vote fo

Fact-checking a Harry S. Truman quote about Socialism often shared on the internet

That political climate touched off the online circulation of a memetic quote from 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman, who purportedly fended off similar attacks on Democrats in 1952 by declaring that “socialism” was a “scare word [Republicans]have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years”:

Much of Truman’s speech was a caustic rebuke of Republicans (and their presidential nominee, General Dwight D. Eisenhower), whom Truman characterized as having “opposed almost all our programs to help the economic life of the country” and “having blindly turned [their]back on the tradition of public action for the public good”:
He sounds like Mitch McConnell nowadays; Eisenhower, I mean, not Truman. Both have in common to reject each Democratic attempt to serve the public good in order to prevent the state from being told to intervene more in the economy.

A reminder of who the US right is. There is nothing new about #trump's or the #Republican party's #fascism. They have always hated #liberal #democracy and stupidly called it #anti-Christian #communism and #socialism. Today, they say the "deep state" killed Kennedy. But if so, then they and trump are the #deepstate, not the #liberals or the #left.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell sees himself as the grim reaper of Democratic proposals

"If I'm still the majority leader of the Senate after next year, none of those things are going to pass the Senate," the Kentucky Republican told a small crowd during an event in his home state Monday. "They won't even be voted on. So think of me as the grim reaper: the guy who is going to make sure that socialism doesn't land on the president's desk."
Because this is how the checks and balances work. The Senate majority leader decides on what is going to be voted about, and if he dislikes the opposing party's ideas, he is not going to even let them pass through. Pure Democracy...
McConnell said progressive platforms are being touted by most mainstream Democrats, not just "some young woman from New York who just got elected to Congress," presumably referring to freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of Queens and the Bronx.

Republicans still going crazy on AOC, calling her a domestic terrorist

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York tweeted about the incident, calling the rhetoric dangerous and adding such incidents lead to spikes in death threats made against her.

"The OCRF does not condone the unauthorized email sent out in our name," the organization wrote. "We apologize to Congresswoman Ocascio-Cortez for the use of unacceptable language in this email, and we do not approve of the message conveyed."
It took them pretty long to apologise for this disgraceful email. Did they first have to find the author of the email and then hold an impromptu summit to discuss whether they stand by their word or not?

On depredating of oneself's dignity - and nationalism

That’s because from the earliest humans onward, we have evolved an instinct to unify in the face of an external threat. Our success on the food chain derives only secondarily from our intelligence. Our primary advantage was our ability to cooperate.

My problem with nationalism is that, left unchecked, it devolves into the spirit of emergency. By placing the logic of “us” above all, it must create thems that must be defeated. It casts about for threats to justify a cult of unity. As Orwell observed, “As nearly as possible, no nationalist ever thinks, talks, or writes about anything except the superiority of his own power unit.”

The Iranians are nationalists; the Nazis were nationalist; Maduro, Chavez, Stalin, Castro, Mussolini, the Kims: They’re all nationalists. So were Washington, Lincoln, Churchill, and de Gaulle. What differentiated the heroes from the villains was how they deployed nationalist sentiments.

ILPS condemns Duterte for slander and intimidation

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), which I represent as Chairperson of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC), hereby condemns in the strongest terms the attempt of the notorious Duterte regime to slander the ILPS and misrepresent it as the international network and International Department of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) for the purpose of intimidating the legal and patriotic and progressive organizations of Filipinos in the Philippines and abroad.

Contrary to the false claim of the Duterte regime, the ILPS is a broad alliance of hundreds of anti-imperialist and democratic mass organizations in scores of countries from all continents. The ICC, its supreme leading organ, is elected by the International Assembly and is restricted by the ILPS Charter from having more than three members from the same country, thus preempting control of the ILPS by any single country or organization.

The Duterte regime’s attack on the ILPS is an extension of... show more

Against Tulip Subsidies | Slate Star Codex

If I were Sanders, I’d propose a different strategy. Make “college degree” a protected characteristic, like race and religion and sexuality. If you’re not allowed to ask a job candidate whether they’re gay, you’re not allowed to ask them whether they’re a college graduate or not. You can give them all sorts of examinations, you can ask them their high school grades and SAT scores, you can ask their work history, but if you ask them if they have a degree then that’s illegal class-based discrimination and you’re going to jail. I realize this is a blatant violation of my usual semi-libertarian principles, but at this point I don’t care.

The Debate

6 months before the Purulia Arms Drop I participated in an Ananda Marga debate about whether terrorism could ever be justified. Ananda Marga was a pacific revolutionary organization that denounced both the materialistic philosophies of capitalism as well as communism. The focus of the ideology was primary yoga and meditation but there was a lot of emphasis on social justice and activism as well. My friends in Ananda Marga were fans of the libertarian socialist ideas behind the Mexican Revolution of 1910, the Spanish revolution of the 30’s and most especially the Zapatista revolution in Mexico which was still occurring at the time of this debate. Nobody in the debate could really defend terrorism. We evaded the idea of terrorism and focused on the justification of using force against the state by violent revolution. However, the other side said our idea of revolution was not terrorism because it is a declared political and revolutionary military movement which does not target civilians like terrorist attacks. We were ideological rebels, but nobody was aggr... show more

Republican woman intends to run against AOC after failed deal with Amazon

“ [AOC]chose ideology over paychecks,” swannabe candidate and medical journalist Ruth Papazian, noting that Amazon vowed to create 25,000 jobs before pulling out of its deal to open a campus in Queens. “People need jobs. We don’t have economic diversity in the outer boroughs.”
Look at her picture in the article and then imagine her to tell you that you chose ideology over paychecks. Could you take her serious?
Anyway, but seriously: Amazon is known to employ people below the average payment of at least 12 Dollars or so. The warehouse conditions for employees are knowingly horrible, you cannot tell people that this was the most reasonable choice, to let Amazon create another headquarter in your borough because jobs were desperately needed. There have to be better choices, and AOC has to find them.
A daughter of Egyptian immigrants, Papazian said she would run on a platform of creating jobs, not chasing them away.

There are people

(I already thought that we had this debate about Nazis being actually left-wingers because it is called National Socialists. Even German poltiicians who, by their age (speaking of age and senilitiy), become more and more demented, made the same claim about this determining predicate in the end. It's socialism, but with a very nationalist scent. Just saying: There's nothing socialist about deporting people for relating to an ethnic, religious or whatever minority and murdering them like vermits. This is racist, discriminating, a crima against humanity. Something only the wrost scum in the world is capable of doing without having a very bad conscience about. Now, the Socialists are nothing like this, they are empathic and objected to reaching the best for all of the poeple (excluding fascists). How would murdering almost half of them accomplish this goal? The answer: It doesn't. Period.)
Barr’s bombshell announcement led to Brooks’ outburst, which in turn led to discussion about whether socialists are Nazis because they both u
