Calling Python from Mathematica

The Mathematica function ExternalEvalute lets you call Python from
Mathematica. However, there are a few wrinkles.

I first pasted in an example from the Mathematica documentation and it
failed.
ExternalEvaluate[
        "Python",
        {"def f(x): return x**2", "f(3)"}
    ]

It turns out you (may) have to tell Mathematica where to find Python. I
ran the following, tried again, and the example worked.
RegisterExternalEvaluator[
        "Python",
        "C:\\bin\\Anaconda3\\python.EXE"
    ]

You can also run Python with NumPy loaded using
ExternalEvaluate["Python-NumPy", … ]

except that didn’t work the first time either. You have to register a
Python-NumPy evaluator separately. So I ran
RegisterExternalEvaluator[

How we made Monty Python’s Life of Brian

John Cleese had wanted to play Brian. Graham Chapman had been drinking quite a lot, and John thought we needed a safe pair of hands for the lead role. But Graham gave up drinking just before and was dry throughout. He had a kind of decency that anchored the whole film. He was also a qualified doctor, so he was very useful looking after cast and crew while we were shooting in Tunisia, with all the stomach upsets people had.

Squircle perimeter and the isoparametric problem

If you have a fixed length of rope and you want to enclose the most area
inside the rope, make it into a circle. This is the solution to the
so-called isoparametric problem.

Dido’s problem is similar. If one side of your bounded area is given by
a straight line, make your rope into a semi-circle.

This post looks at a similar problem for a
squircle.
Peter Panholzer
mentioned
the problem of finding the squircle exponent that led to the largest
area in proportion to its arclength. This sounds like the isoparametric
problem, but it’s not.

The isoparametric problem holds perimeter constant and lets the shape
enclosed vary, maximizing the area. The question here is to hold t... show more

Hey everyone, I’m a new #gplusrefugee just landing here. I was Boris Borcic there, but for the moment I’d like to try using the transition to change username/identity... unless it reveals easy to change username here without unwanted rippling. At the entry point, I listed the following hashtags as my interests #algorithm, #art, #artificialintelligence, #bias, #biology, #climatechange, #cognition, #english, #french, #gplus-fr, #gplusdiaspora, #humanrights, #linguistics, #mathematics, #physics, #politics, #programming, #python, #religion, #science, #switzerland, and #usa.

Thanks for the invite, @Garry Knight!

How George Harrison – and a very naughty boy – saved British cinema

In 1978, just as Monty Python’s Life of Brian was about to go into production, the chairman of EMI, Lord Delfont, got around to reading the screenplay his company had bought. He didn’t like it. He was so appalled, in fact, that he washed his hands of the whole outrageous venture, and the Pythons had to raise £2m in a hurry.Eric Idle had the idea of phoning George Harrison, the richest person he knew; Harrison in turn consulted his American business manager, Denis O’Brien, who suggested that they fund the film themselves. The only snag was that they would have to remortgage Harrison’s mansion in Henley-on-Thames as well as O’Brien’s London offices. The ex-Beatle would go on to call it “the most expensive cinema ticket ever issued”. But, he reasoned, how else could he see the new Monty Python comedy?

Today I have recreated two animations for Wikimedia Commons. Here they are side by side:

Bild/Foto

They show Galilean (left) and Lorentz (right) transformations used in physics, by showing an observer moving along a world line and a number of random events in space-time. Lorentz transform is used in theory of relativity and its consequences are some things -- such as simultaneity of events happening in different places, distances and durations -- being relative to the frame of reference.

Similar animations are already present at Wikimedia Commons, but are not #publicdomain. I recreate such files and release them under #CC0 so that they are not restricted by #copyright. I have written a #python script (also #CC0) to generate the animations (it can be found here).

FindHello is a resource finder app that uses the Google Maps API combined with a database curated specifically for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Frontend
The frontend has been developed with Ionic v3 (not the latest v4). Ionic uses Apache Cordova v8 behind the scenes as well as Angular v5 as the Javascript frontend framework.

Backend
The backend API has been developed with the Django framework and uses a number of plugins, including Django Rest Framework and GeoDjango.

We are looking for volunteers to help with minor bug fixes and improvements to the front end as well making some tweaks and additions to the Django API and Admin Dashboard on the back end.

This would be a great learning opportunity and you would know that your work is going to helping newcomers find the resources they need to build successful lives in the United States.

John #Cleese taking a break on the set of Monty #Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

#photography

Well, given how I know kids from 6 to 10, I'd say they can learn much more than that.

I think that teaching #Python programming to a 10yo is quite doable if you start at 6 teaching basics.

And I think we can do much better than Python.

We should have language that are simpler AND safer, not more complex (whatever safety they guarantee).

One way to do each thing.
One loop.
One branch.
One way to organize code.

Something that is simple and force people to keep things simple.
