So having #MariaDB in a container is really strange to manage. I had before issue in reason of memory limit and today my container has been corrupted and I had to recreate it. Fortunately data was in a separate volume. I never had things like that with #postgresql

Gibberfish Social has undergone a major overhaul this weekend.

First, the database has been converted to from MariaDB to PostgreSQL, which has led to a noticeable speed-up in stream loading time.

Second, the single server has been split into two: One which holds the database and user-uploaded content, which uses full-disk encryption. The other runs the Diaspora, Movim, and chat servers and holds no data of its own. Both new servers are ARM64-based systems, which do not have hardware backdoors like those designed into Intel and AMD chipsets.

This is not only a little bit cheaper to run than our old server, but allows us to easily scale by adding more application servers if the need arises. "Cheaper" doesn't mean free, though, so if you enjoy the services provided by this pod, please consider making a donation to help support it. Thanks!

There will be some downtime today as we attempt to migrate the database from MariaDB to Postgresql to improve performance. Thanks for your patience.

Somehow I missed that #postgres 11.2 had dropped. It's fully compatible with 11.1 databases, no need to dump and restore.

Ich hatte meinen Matrix Server für zwei Tage offline, weil ich große performance Probleme hatte.
Nach einen wechsel von Sqlite auf Postgresql-11 läuft nun alles.
Python3.5 -> 3.7 wird noch folgen.

Wenn es so weiter geht, dann werde ich die ersten Bridges installieren und mich dann von den anderen Messenger trennen.

Hubzilla on Silverhaze.EU gone

Already announced months ago (so that the users had enough time to migrate) I've now shutdown my #Hubzilla hub running on Silverhaze.EU:

server:~# a2dissite silverhaze.eu
Site silverhaze.eu disabled.
To activate the new configuration, you need to run:
  service apache2 reload
server:~# service apache2 reload
[ ok ] Reloading Apache httpd web server: apache2.
server:~#
postgres@server:~$ dropdb hubzilla
postgres@server:~$

Hubzilla was a nice thing to try out, but I don't think that I've gained much benefit of this, because I also have #Friendica node running for years and a #Mastodon instance running for some time now.
Hubzilla is a nice software for what it is: a complete set of web applications. When you only want to have some kind of social web for the #... show more

PostgreSQL is faster than MariaDB / MySQL although it uses a bit more memory.
The current diaspora* code base could be improved to reach better performance. Some queries could be optimized, but it's harder to do it with two database engines maintained at the same time. So I'm wondering what would be the impact on the community if diaspora* stops supporting MySQL. Of course, this would come with a detailed migration guide and plenty of time to upgrade, with full support of the community. Remember: this is just a poll to know your opinion, no decision has been taken at the moment.
