Why we shouldn't call political science a scientific discipline

Shed the pretense, however, and I accept there is a set of political phenomena that can be studied “scientifically.” That is only to say there is puzzling, yet observable, patterned human political behavior that can be understood and explained as such. Corollary to this is that I’m perfectly willing to grant there is a lot of observable human political behavior – important human political behavior – that is not patterned, and therefore cannot be explained “scientifically.”

And it’s a good thing for a political scientist, when asked to recommend an optimal path of action or policy, to respond, “I can explain likely outcomes that result from different policy choices, but when it comes to identifying the optimal policy outcome, your opinion is just as good as mine.” (When I occasionally use that line in interviews with journalists, I’ve had more than one reporter respond with something like “Well, yeah, but I can

YouTube experiences a hard time combatting extremism and conspiracy theories

The massive “library,” generated by users with little editorial oversight, is bound to have untrue nonsense. Instead, YouTube’s problem is that it allows the nonsense to flourish. And, in some cases, through its powerful artificial intelligence system, it even provides the fuel that lets it spread.

YouTube still has struggled to explain any new corporate vision to the public and investors – and sometimes, to its own staff. Five senior personnel who left YouTube and Google in the last two years privately cited the platform’s inability to tame extreme, disturbing videos as the reason for their departure.

Somewhere along the last decade, he added, YouTube prioritized chasing profits over the safety of its users. “We may have been hemorrhaging money,” he said. “But at least dogs riding skateboards never killed anyone.”

How shall the Republican party proceed henceforth?

There’s a reason why Steve Bannon has (ironically) become an inveterate globe-trotter: his revolution quickly found its limits on the home front. Compromise is anathema to practitioners of the paranoid style, and in politics, people who can’t compromise have a hard time making new friends.

_ The Republicans could pick up that ball and run with it, rebranding as the party of misery. There are some downsides though. Politicians don’t have much incentive to make things better if despair and resentment are their most potent electoral weapons._
But if they managed to gather those people for their ideals, they could renew these regions, create prosperity and wealth, so that those people will embrace them due to the positive turnout their election has brought. I mean, you wouldn't turn away from the hand that fed you when you were starving, just because you were no longer hungry. One day, you will be, and then, you will kneel before the hand to feed you again because the new... show more

What's the state of our civilisation?

Virtually all past civilisations have faced this fate. Some recovered or transformed, such as the Chinese and Egyptian. Other collapses were permanent, as was the case of Easter Island. Sometimes the cities at the epicentre of collapse are revived, as was the case with Rome. In other cases, such as the Mayan ruins, they are left abandoned as a mausoleum for future tourists.

When climatic stability changes, the results can be disastrous, resulting in crop failure, starvation and desertification. The collapse of the Anasazi, the Tiwanaku civilisation, the Akkadians, the Mayan, the Roman Empire, and many others have all coincided with abrupt climatic changes, usually droughts.

_ In the past, collapse was confined to regions – it was a temporary setback, and people often could easily return to agrarian or hunter-gatherer lifestyles. For many, it was even a welcome reprieve from the oppression of early states. Moreover, the weapons available during social disorder were rudimentary: swords, arrows and o... show more

Trump and the FED - Bernard Lietaer and ALTERNATIVES

Banks have become the state inside the state (in cooperation with the CIA/NSA/FBI?).

Even Trump a strong believer of modern days neoliberal capitalism – will see that this system is not about productivity and jobs and innovations (anymore, if it ever was) – it’s about money-empires, trickery and robbery with via debt created out of thin air.

“President Trump has been critical of the Fed’s approach and last week tried to pressurise it into not raising rates further, saying that it would be a mistake. “I think that would be foolish, but what can I say?” he said.” (src)

can’t say nothing – or get shot like Kennedy.

The Free State of #Thuringia in #Germany wants to increase the visibility of #FreeSoftware and launches its first #OpenSource award. Already the eGovernmentLaw from May, 2018 says that new software developed for or by the state’s public administrations will be shared under a Free Software licence.
