Setup my own hosted Friendica and Hubzilla Social Network nodes for comparison

Both of these social networks are powerful in their own right in terms of not just detailed profiles and blog posting, but also have photo galleries, calendars, messaging, integration with Twitter and other networks, and of course federated posts across Diaspora, Mastodon, GNUSocial, each other, and also other networks.

What I was showing in the attached photo is the profile view of each (Friendica on top and Hubzilla below it) and more specifically how my auto-imported (mirrored) RSS feed gets imported. Both import the text fine but Hubzilla does better in terms of perfectly displaying the post along with its image.

I hear some asking what is Friendica or Hubzilla? Essentially I'm hosting my own "Facebook" which my friends and family (or I could open to the public) could use just like Facebook but without adverts or privacy intrusions. One difference here is various people host their own "nodes" but anyone on any of the nodes can follow someone at a different node as if it is all one big hosting platform. This gives flexibility for different rules and functionality at... show more

hey #fediverse, tell me about non-unix #operatingsystems you like!

For example, I really enjoy Haiku and am intrigued by MorphOS.

Political federated aggregator: a project

A few beginning points.
Much of the consensus building and of the political communication
takes place on social networks, according to rules which are
incorporated in the structure of proprietary social networks:
sponsorship, bubbles, building of identity, hate, narcissism, and
conformism.
The (albeit often only shown) activists’ protagonism on social network
has become a practice of dissemination of political messages and an
important element of contents in the form of identification, which
often feeds identity-imposing narratives and hate speech. The analysis
of social network interactions [big data] provides feedbacks to
communicators which have the access to. With the means of these
feedbacks, communicators can build a custom argumentative narrative,
which is marred by an oversimplification of the numerical analysis.

What we need.
In “Inventing the future”, a very stimulating book by Srnicek and
Williams, the concept of «ecosystem of organizations» de... show more

We've reached a point where we'd like to start #hiring developers to work on the #WriteFreely roadmap 💻 :writefreely2:

This would be remote, contract-based work for now, with a chance to go full-time later in the year (assuming all continues going well). You'd be creating free / open source software.

I'll have more details soon, but especially if you're a #Go / #Golang developer and want to work on a growing #fediverse project, I'd love to hear from you!

After an Easter terror attack, Sri Lanka cut access to popular social media - Which is why you also want an account to popular federated social media accounts

Social media services that are federated such as Maston (alternative to Twitter) and Diaspora, Hubzilla and Friendica (alternatives to Facebook) provide full functionality from any of 100's of separate nodes (the addresses where you sign up). Posting at one node where you subscribed allows the message to be followed form elsewhere. There is no single central address that gets blocked to disable the network.

New nodes pop up all the time (I even created my very own hosted Hubzilla and Friendica nodes).

There are also other types of social networks such as Socialhome, Peertube (Youtube alternative), PixelFed (Instagram alternative) and others and usually belonging to just one is all you need, and you can usually follow/be followed from any other. It's the way social media will probably evolve to in future.

See https://fediverse.party/ for a list of federated social networks and lists of nodes where you can join.

NB: Sometimes a government is not trying to censor its population but rather to protect them... show more

There is both a risk and an opportunity in the current political sabre-rattling against "social media" in multiple countries. The #DataFarms will attempt to capture any new regulation and twist it into anti-competitive forms that disproportionately target smaller players, and even non-commercial ones like most #fediverse instances (eg #Article13). But if we can educate politicians enough, they might begin dismantling the datafarming revenue model that gives #TheStacks their dominance (eg #GDPR).

What I desperately want to know is, what do these politicians and pundits mean when they say "social media"? Are they talking specifically about ad-selling, corporate-owned #DataFarms like FB, YT, and the birdsite? Or they using it in its technical sense, where it distinguishes platforms for user-generated media (including the #fediverse) from #infotainment media where the ability to publish is controlled by editors and other gatekeepers?

Has anyone evaluated the other Fediverse offerings? Realitically, I'm considering a Hubzilla or Friendica node.

I want a longer format post and control over media.

PixelFed is a free open federated alternative to Instagram.

There are lots of different instances you can sign up at, for example:

https://pixelfed.de
https://pxlfd.me
https://pix.diaspodon.fr
https://shared.graphics
https://pixelfed.fedilab.app

It is part of the ActivityPub-powered Fediverse, so you can follow PixelFed accounts from Mastodon etc. For example: @earth

You can follow the project's latest news at @pixelfed

Check out what’s on PeerTube’s 2019 Roadmap
The PeerTube project has made some huge strides since its initial inception in 2018, ramping up from a 0.0.1 Alpha release last January to a 1.0 stable release in December, the project has been great at managing its roadmap, and has updated it to reflect their 2019 plans. Here’s our takeaway of some of the more impressive features coming in.

In case you missed it, the lead developer of open federated Reddit-alternative @prismo has put up a new flagship instance:

https://prismo.xyz

This replaces the previous instance (prismo.news) which suffered a major database failure.

You'll have to sign up if you want to post or upvote, but you can follow users and comment on posts from elsewhere on the Fediverse.

Hello Fediverse!

What are some good community hashtags on here that people might want to know about?

For example:

#introductions - post a bit about yourself and your interests, so that people can welcome you to the Fediverse

What I dislike about the federation

I have been noticing since a while there is a very impolite attitude among many people who use the federated networks, the lacking of desire to build a community that include all the other ones from all the different countries and languages.

Many times I see posts that starting in English which is the most common ground to communicate among the others that end filled up in any others languages than English, along the fact that is unkindly and annoying, it goes in the opposite way of the inclusion which should be the reason why a social network exists.

It is true that Mastodon resolved it brilliantly but in Diaspora and Friendica you can't exclude topics because the language that means is up to the users take the task to avoid cross languages in any topic.

However I see there isn't any desire to avoid that behavior and people are quite careless about that, hence I think I will start to ignore all the people that do not respect this very simple, unwritten and basic rule.
