Meine Browser Konfiguration

I check elementary's medium blog from time to time, mostly out of morbid curiosity. elementary is an opensource OS based on Ubuntu. What got me interested initially were a couple of things about their desktop: performance, such that you click on an app's icon and it opens, and autosaving -- if you have a new unnamed file that you haven't saved yet and you close the app you can just reopen it and get to the same state. I'm tempted to say it's not a big deal but given how dull and unimaginative most desktops are, I'd say it is. What's also good about the project is they are trying to incentivize users to give app developers money via pay-what-you-want app purchases. And this is where I run out of good things to say because while being built on opensource and being opensource itself it has such an Apple vibe. For example, here they mention "the risks of sideloading app... show more

GNU/Linux Tips: Thunar's Secret Weapon!

If you use a desktop environment then there's a lot of reasons to like the Thunar file manager. Especially so, for example, if you're tired of Nautilus trying to be Windows Explorer, crashing at the worst times, like while you're transferring files over sFTP, or just generally devouring your system's memory (e.g. tracker & tracker miners run even if you use Nautilus without the Gnome DE). But I digress.

The real purpose of this post isn't to vent my frustrations with Nautilus, it is to shed some extra light on a feature of Thunar that often goes unmentioned and unnoticed - the bulk renamer. It's no secret, really, but it isn't specifically mentioned in the Edit or right-click menus, where you only find the regular 'Rename...' option. In fact, I don't see it mentioned, or even hinted at, anywhere in the app, despite the great utility this little tool possesses!

So how do we access this bulk renamer? Does it even exist, or am I just toying with you here? So many questions... Well, the Thunar develope... show more

A fully Libre phone that runs full distros! ...and it’s actually slick looking!

♲ Adam Gaskins (self@social.linuxlusers.com):
Not only is the Librem 5 a fairly bad ass and fully Libre device, but it runs full-on GNU/Linux OS (not a watered down distro), and my understanding is that it’s capable of running any GNU/Linux distro built for ARM!
Librem 5 – Purism
Here it is connected to a 4K display with BT headset, mouse and keyboard:

I hope they will offer a model with more than three gigs of ram and larger storage, for users who want to make better use of the full desktop potential! As it is though, it’s a very capable device with killer specs for a phone of it’s size and price. I’d love to see it be a huge success and inspire other companies to make hardware like this!

It’s possible to enable this desktop mode by going to Developer Options on a Google Pixel, Pixel 2, or Pixel 3running the beta and enabling the “force desktop mode” Developer Option, then launching the activity in the Pixel Launcher using the “GMS” command from above. You’ll need to change your Pixel’s DPI before casting or connecting your phone’s screen to any external displays, though.

This certainly looks interesting and is something I'm going to keep an eye on as we hear about more practical ways this may be used. Looks like Android Q is certainly going to be bringing quite a few new interesting features. I'm also really keen on the full dark mode.

Linux | Mein aktueller Linux Desktop

Und n... show more

Linux Lite 4.2

I kinda miss my old #linuxlite. There's a lot not to like about it (#systemd, the #Ubuntu base), and I would never dare use any Ubuntu-based #Linux distro without the added "aftermarket" safeguards that a former LinuxLite developer made and maintains to protect LL users from that weird upstream beta crap.

Yet there's a lot that I miss about my old distro, too. The super-ultra-mega "newbie friendliness" of the distro. The very helpful and enthusiastic community, which happens to include a lot of users of my current daily driver, #MX-Linux. The exquisite ease of installation, the highly specialized #Xfce4 desktop, the cool tool set. Without the added safety stuff from unlockforus I wouldn't use it, but for total #noobs coming from #Windows or #Mac, I think it beats even #Linux-Mint for introducing new users to #desktop Linux.

So I'm torrenting it today and I'll probably dual-boot it with MX-18, and create a custom LinuxLite-Plus+Unlockme iso to share with new users.
