Scaling MySQL vs. PostgreSQL

An engineer at Uber compares scalability issues between PostgreSQL and MySQL as part of an explanation about why Uber found it necessary to migrate from PostgreSQL to MySQL.

I'll also toss in my two cents here with the observation that the MySQL environment has a "virtually synchronous" all-peer HA clustering option available in the form of Codership Øy's Galera synchronous replication layer. No such capability exists for PostgreSQL.

(Codership likes to use the term "virtually synchronous" because network latency is a thing, and replication cannot be truly synchronous in the presence of network latency. That said, on local Galera clusters we normally expect to see cluster-wide commit latency below 500 microseconds.)
