IBM 360 Model 20 Rescue and Restoration

In late April of 2019 Adam Bradley and Chris Blackburn were sitting in a pub on a Monday night when Chris happened across a somewhat unusual eBay listing for an IBM 360 Model 20. This eBay listing was unusual mainly because it didn’t actually list the computer as an IBM 360, but rather as an “seltene Anlage “Puma Computer IBM 2020” which roughly translates from German into “rare plant “Puma Computer IBM 2020”.

How to Upgrade Ubuntu from the Command Line | MakeTechEasier

Ubuntu’s Update Manager makes it relatively easy to upgrade your installation to a new major release. The utility’s graphical interface guides you through a step-by-step wizard that should be easy to follow.

But there are times when you cannot use a graphical utility – for example, on servers you don’t have access to a graphical interface. In this case you are forced to use the command line to upgrade Ubuntu.

Google Fuchsia is about 'pushing the state of the art' | Android Authority

Google pulled back the curtain on Fuchsia, the company’s future operating system, just a little this week during its Google I/O developer conference. Thanks to comments made by Android and Chrome head Hiroshi Lockheimer, we now know the platform isn’t necessarily for phones, tablets, or PCs, but instead targets all form factors. Still, Google seems to be in no hurry to bring Google Fuchsia to market.

How Intel's Project Athena will shape the future of laptops | TechRadar

Intel is envisioning a bold new future for laptops with its Project Athena initiative, which the company first announced at CES 2019.
Project Athena will see Intel offer guidance to equipment and PC component manufacturers to create future laptops that are smarter, faster (thanks to 5G) and more power efficient – which will hopefully mean much longer battery lives.

Windows 10’s update for late 2019 may not have any major new features | TechRadar

It seems that the next update to follow after the Windows 10 May 2019 Update – which after the May update will arrive in the second half of this year – could be a minor affair that makes little or no additions in terms of new features, and is pretty much just a service pack (fixes and refinements) for the previous update.

Microsoft brings PowerToys back to let anyone improve Windows 10 for power users | The Verge

Microsoft first introduced the concept of “PowerToys” in Windows 95. It was originally a way for Windows engineers to test a prototype feature, and Microsoft packaged some of the best ones into a PowerToys bundle. These PowerToys included popular utilities like Tweak UI to customize the Windows user interface, Quick Res to quickly change screen resolutions, and Send To X that let you send files and folders to the command line, clipboard, or desktop.
But what about Clippy?!

Microsoft's Cortana will eventually sound more like a real assistant | Engadget

Virtual assistants like Microsoft's Cortana, Amazon's Alexa and Google's have finally made voice-controlled computing a reality. But talking to them still feels basic -- shouting commands isn't exactly how you'd interact with another human being. At its Build developer conference today, Microsoft gave us a glimpse at how Cortana could improve on that.

Dell laptops and computers vulnerable to remote hijacks | ZDNet

A vulnerability in the Dell SupportAssist utility exposes Dell laptops and personal computers to a remote attack that can allow hackers to execute code with admin privileges on devices using an older version of this tool and take over users' systems.
Dell has released a patch for this security flaw on April 23; however, many users are likely to remain vulnerable unless they've already updated the tool --which is used for debugging, diagnostics, and Dell drivers auto-updates.

Improving on the sieve of Eratosthenes

Ancient algorithm

Eratosthenes had a good idea for finding all primes less than an upper
bound N over 22 centuries ago.

Make a list of the numbers 2 to N. Circle 2, then scratch out all the
larger multiples of 2 up to N. Then move on to 3. Circle it, and
scratch out all the larger multiples of 3.

Every time you start over and find a number that hasn’t been scratched
out before, that means it’s not divisible by any numbers smaller than
itself, so it’s prime. Circle it and repeat. This algorithm is known as
the sieve of Eratosthenes.

You could turn this into an algorithm for factoring every number less
than N by not just scratching off composite numbers but keeping track
of what numbers they were divisible by.

Not bad for an algorithm that predates Hindu-Arabic numerals by nine
centuries. But as you might imagine, there have been a... show more

Windows 10 Will Soon Stop Forcing Updates | Make Tech Easier

One of Windows 10’s most reviled “features” since its release is its update schedule. People frequently reported that the operating system would restart itself during sensitive actions with no easy way to stop it. There are unofficial methods, but Microsoft was always adamant that automatic updates were for the best.
TLDR: You'll be able to put off updates for 35 days, which "should be long enough to discover if an update is harmful or not".

How to Uninstall Windows 10 Updates When the PC Is Not Booting Up | MakeTechEasier

Windows 10 updates itself automatically. For the most part, the updates won’t cause any problems. However, from time to time the update may contain bugs that can make your system unbootable. Generally, in those situations, you are forced to use the System Restore tool. However, the System Restore feature is disabled by default. Unless you manually enable the feature, there is no way you can restore the system to a known good state.

How to Schedule Emails in Gmail | Make Tech Easier

Email scheduling is a useful tool for pre-writing emails you know you’ll want to send at a specific time. By scheduling emails, you can be sure the greatest number of recipients will open the email by only sending at peak times. It’s especially useful if you want to send emails to a large number of clients but want to space the messages out to avoid pummeling a server. Emails can be scheduled for an arbitrary time and date in the future. When you schedule emails in Gmail, they will sit in a special section of your outbox until they are ready to be sent.

A truly horrible random number generator

I needed a bad random number generator for an illustration, and chose
RANDU, possibly the worst random number generator that was ever widely
deployed. Donald Knuth comments on RANDU in the second volume of his
magnum opus.

When this chapter was first written in the late 1960’s, a truly horrible
random number generator called RANDU was commonly used on most of the
world’s computers.

This generator starts with an odd seed x~0~ and generates subsequent
values via

x~n+1~ = 645539 x~n~ mod 2^31^

I needed to generate 8-bit numbers, and I took the lowest eight bits of
each value from RANDU. (To be fair, the highest 8 bits would have been
better, but my goal was to find a bad RNG, so I used the lowest.)

To demonstrate the generator’s (lack of) quality I made a histogram of
sorts with a 16 by 16 grid, one cell for each possible 8... show more
