I'm looking for #recommendations on a new #text #editor- preferably with:I have #manuskript - nice, but no #wysiwyg #viewer (unless I missed it). I just tried #Atom - nice - has a wysiwyg viewer, and supports #mermaid , but heavily focused on #coding. Has #foldable text, but it doesn't work, presumably because I'm not coding. I've tried #libreoffice - too clunky.

Calling all coders!

It’s been wonderful to see so many new members joining our community over the past few days, particularly all of you coming from Google+. ❤

You might already have noticed that diaspora* is missing some features that you’d really like to use.

As an open-source Free Software project, diaspora* is created by its community. Now that you’re part of this community, we’d love you to help us improve it for everyone.

Our team of volunteer developers spends all the time they can spare working on diaspora*. But there’s always a lot more work to do. The main issue that slows the pace of development is simply developer time. To increase developer time and so increase the speed of development, we need more developers!

Help us improve the software

If you can code, or want to learn, we’d like to hear from you! diaspora* is built on Ruby on Rails, with many JavaScript elements. Have a look at our... show more

Expert Says Don’t Teach Kids to Code

I agree with the article. The OECD dude clearly has no clue what learning to code is about. It teaches you analytical and algorithmic thinking, problem solving, decomposition skills and so much more that will be useful even if you never write a line of code again afterwards.

The only thing in the article that I slightly disagree with is this bit:
But the real value is to understand when and why you would want, say, a linked list vs a hash table vs a binary tree data structure.
That's still waaaaay too low-level a skill to be generally useful. This might be useful later on for a couple of kids that become programmers. But as I said above, I believe that the skills you learn from programming go way beyond that on a much more abstract level (but learned on the very concrete level of coding) and benefit you even in the unlikely event that you never touch a computer again.

He makes up for it though wi... show more

CodeSpark Academy - https://codespark.com/

So I heard of this from somewhere and finally got the trial going for Lilia (my 8 yo). She's absolutely loving it. The interface is really nice and easy to use and the mixing of game building and light coding is a great idea (with the cute characters of course). Nice to see her building her own platformer levels ❤

Will share some games once she gets more advanced 😁 Also nice that it builds (like Scratch) this culture of #opensource and sharing. She was already enthusiastically telling me how she played a level made by some random person and then started tweaking it and how cool that was.

After a free week trial, it's $7 per month, but well worth it I think.

I don't use git
I don't understand static and dynamically typed language
I don't understand polymorphism
I don't understand REST
I don't understand how functional programming differs from whatever else
I don't understand abstract coding frameworks and frames of mind
I don't understand library management

I have been coding useful things for myself for 15 years and I have little to no idea how any of the preceding work. Programming as a community has gotten more and more abstract, leaving me behind. When discussing problems I wish to solve with coding at other coders, I usually get back some answer that makes zero sense and is abstract or predicated on knowledge they learned foundationally, when all I learned was to start writing code and making results happen.

At this point, I would just learn all the things but I'm off-put by the general manosphere vibe and jargon saturation. It doesn't feel like a space I'm wanted in because my intelligence and usefulness is called into question regarding these things. It's not a welcoming way to be—assuming eve... show more
