I must intreat your patience — your gentle hearing. I am not going to question your opinions. I am not going to meddle with your belief. I am not going to dictate to you mine. All that I say is, examine; enquire. Look into the nature of things. Search out the ground of your opinions, the for and the against. Know why you believe, understand what you believe, and possess a reason for the faith that is in you.
Frances "Fanny" Wright (1795-1852) Scottish-American writer, lecturer, social reformer
A Course of Popular Lectures, Lecture 3 “Of the more Important Divisions and Essential Parts of Knowledge” (1829)

Unoriginal Faith (with AronRa)

The validity of an idea or action is determined not by whether it is widely believed or widely reviled but by whether it obeys the rules of logic. It is not because an argument is denounced by a majority that it is wrong nor, for those drawn to heroic defiance, that it is right.
Alain de Botton (b. 1969) Swiss-British author
The Consolations of Philosophy, ch. 1 “Consolation for Unpopularity” (2000)

On Workism - work as one's religion

The economists of the early 20th century did not foresee that work might evolve from a means of material production to a means of identity production. They failed to anticipate that, for the poor and middle class, work would remain a necessity; but for the college-educated elite, it would morph into a kind of religion, promising identity, transcendence, and community. Call it workism.

What is one's necessity might be another's religion. This is creepy.

Between 1950 and 2012, annual hours worked per employee fell by about 40 percent in Germany and the Netherlands—but by only 10 percent in the United States. Americans “work longer hours, have shorter vacations, get less in unemployment, disability, and retirement benefits, and retire later, than people in comparably rich societies,” wrote Samuel P. Huntington in his 2005 book Who Are We?: The Challenges to America’s National Identity.

Today’s rich American men can afford vastly more downtime. But they have used their... show more

Even a "basic bitch" false understanding of God is better than no understanding of God. Which is what atheists believe. (Scientific materialists.) Atheists suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect, falsly believing themselves to be intellectually superior even though they are spiritually retarded. Fundamentalist Christians may be wrong in some respects, but they will alwayse be less wrong than Atheists.

Atheists are so backwards that they believe their beliefs are not beliefs.

I myself don't identify as any specific religion, but I harbour spiritual theories. Feel free to comment, this is open to discussion.

Some thoughts on debate and the political spectrum...

I've noticed the vaccine debate parallels the gun-control debate in many ways. Both seem to be very polarizing, with not a lot of middle ground. Both sides view the other as a danger to public health and especially children. It seems that no matter how much the topic is argued and debated people remain very rigid in their position.

While there may be some individual exceptions, it's interesting to me that both sides in the debate tend to skew between left-leaning and right-leaning politically. (While there may be some right-leaning individuals who support a mandatory vaccination schedule,) it seems those who are opposed tend to mostly lean right. This could possibly be to do with an imposed Hegelian dialectic, as it seems to me there would be a lot of left-wing reasons to oppose forced vaccinations. Another poss... show more

I believe that you can reach the point where there is no longer any difference between developing the habit of pretending to believe and developing the habit of believing.
