The unique characteristics of software as a technological medium have an impact beyond the profession itself. To understand the broader impact of software eating the world, we have to begin by examining the nature of technology adoption processes.#society #technology #sociology #software #innovation #entrepreneur #SiliconValley
YouTube experiences a hard time combatting extremism and conspiracy theories
The massive “library,” generated by users with little editorial oversight, is bound to have untrue nonsense. Instead, YouTube’s problem is that it allows the nonsense to flourish. And, in some cases, through its powerful artificial intelligence system, it even provides the fuel that lets it spread.Don't be too quick to judge. Who knows how many dogs have died when their owners put them on a skateboard and sent them down the lane, where they terribly were hit by a car crossing the road. You never know...
YouTube still has struggled to explain any new corporate vision to the public and investors – and sometimes, to its own staff. Five senior personnel who left YouTube and Google in the last two years privately cited the platform’s inability to tame extreme, disturbing videos as the reason for their departure.
Somewhere along the last decade, he added, YouTube prioritized chasing profits over the safety of its users. “We may have been hemorrhaging money,” he said. “But at least dogs riding skateboards never killed anyone.”
The company was facing an ongoing advertiser boycott, but the real catalyst was an explosion of media coverage over disturbing videos aimed at children. The worst was “Toy Freaks,” a channel where a father posted videos with his two daughters, sometimes showing them vomiting or in extreme pain. YouTube removed Toy Freaks, and quickly distanced itself from it.What is most suspicious about this article is the lack of public communication YouTube provides. The wrose thing you could do about public criticism on you is to not answer on questions referred to you, especially when you could try to swing yourself out of this entirely uncomfortable situation. You only make things worse by not responding to these questions.
Policy staff suggested soon after limiting recommendations on the page to vetted news sources. YouTube management rejected the proposal, according to a person with knowledge of the event. The person didn’t know the reasoning behind the rejection, but noted that YouTube was then intent on accelerating its viewing time for videos related to news.
Yet, in the past, YouTube actively dissuaded staff from being proactive. Lawyers verbally advised employees not assigned to handle moderation to avoid searching on their own for questionable videos, like viral lies about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, according to one former executive upset by the practice. The person said the directive was never put in writing, but the message was clear: If YouTube knew these videos existed, its legal grounding grew thinner. Federal law shields YouTube, and other tech giants, from liability for the content on their sites, yet the companies risk losing the protections of this law if they take too active an editorial role.It turns worse and worse, the further you read... Dude, they are really told to treat their platform like a playground for everyone, as if they were only an application to the internet to make everything handier and neater in its appearance, but beside this, there are no supervisors to oversee their actions so that no-one is being hurt or otherwise limited on one's well-being. This is... Oh, I don't know.

Welcome to AirSpace | The Verge
Every time Schwarzmann alights in a foreign city he checks the app, which lists food, nightlife, and entertainment recommendations with the help of a social network-augmented algorithm. Then he heads toward the nearest suggested cafe. But over the past few years, something strange has happened. "Every coffee place looks the same," Schwarzmann says. The new cafe resembles all the other coffee shops Foursquare suggests, whether in Odessa, Beijing, Los Angeles, or Seoul: the same raw wood tables, exposed brick, and hanging Edison bulbs.https://www.theverge.com/2016/8/3/12325104/airbnb-aesthetic-global-minimalism-startup-gentrification
We could call this strange geography created by technology "AirSpace." It’s the realm of coffee shops, bars, startup offices, and co-live / work spaces that share the same hallmarks everywhere you go: a profusion of symbols of comfort and quality, at least to a certain connoisseurial mindset. Minimalist furniture. Craft beer and avocado toast. Reclaimed wood. Industrial lighting. Cortados. Fast internet. The homogeneity of these spaces means that traveling between them is frictionless, a value that Silicon Valley prizes and cultural influencers like Schwarzmann take advantage of. Changing places can be as painless as reloading a website. You might not even realize you’re not where you started.
Hotels have long sold visions of comfort and stability, and Airbnb is evolving toward replicating the hotel industry it disrupted. In 2013, the company hired Chip Conley, the founder of the Joie de Vivre hotel group, as its head of global hospitality and strategy. But what makes Airbnb different is its decentralization. Like Schwarzmann’s copycat cafes, its aesthetic arises from tens of thousands of people making the same independent decisions rather than a corporate mandate. The Airbnb marketplace is evolving toward its most effective product; it seems that what consumers want more than an exotic experience is something like a Days Inn but more stylish and less obvious — a generic space hidden behind a seemingly unique facade.
Left unchecked, there is a kind of nightmare version of AirSpace that could spread room by room, cafe by cafe across the world. It’s already there, if you look for it. There are blank white lofts with subway-tile bathrooms, modular furniture, wall-mounted TVs, high-speed internet, and wide, viewless windows in every city, whether it’s downtown Madrid; Nørrebro, Copenhagen; or Gulou, Beijing. Once you take the place of the people who live there, you can head out to their favorite coffee shops, bars, or workspaces, which will be instantly recognizable because they look just like the apartment that you’re living in. You will probably enjoy it. You might think, ‘This is nice, I am comfortable.’ And then you can move on to the next one, only a click away.
All this essays looks quite rhizomatic to me, it's about the memes we are copying without knowing; is it bad? I don't know, but the aesthetic of sci-fi with everything in aluminum doesn't seem distant.

Palantir Technologies to build battlefield intelligence system for US army
Industry experts said it marked the first time that the government had tapped a Silicon Valley software company, as opposed to a traditional military contractor, to lead a defense program of record, which has a dedicated line of funding from Congress. The contract is potentially worth more than $800 million.
But critics within the Army and in Congress have for years complained that DCGS-A cost too much and didn’t deliver the intelligence and capabilities that soldiers needed. Some soldiers said the system was too hard to use and searched for alternatives.
The company faced initial skepticism from investors, who thought it couldn’t overcome entrenched bureaucratic interests and what they saw as political favoritism that led the Pentagon to spend billions every year with the same small group of Beltway contractors.

High-end borough of San Francisco fights against erection of homeless shelter in its neighbourhood
A new fundraiser was launched mid-day Thursday to pay for legal costs and coordinate a strategy to get the homeless shelter built. By end of business on that first day, the group raised over $16,000, including a $5,000 donation from the GoFundMe team. The general news on this GoFundMe race between pro- and anti-homeless-shelter activisists, provided by Gizmodo
“GoFundMe employees choose to nominate worthy causes throughout the year and we believe this campaign to support the Coalition is an important effort,” GoFundMe spokesperson Bobby Whithorne told Gizmodo.
Earlier this year, Breed passed two new laws expediting the building of navigation centers that historically had been hamstrung by lengthy permit and challenge processes that kept any potential solutions moving at a glacial pace.
Also, there's a local source that covered this rather unusual encounter. When you're interested in reading what it has got to say, continue reading below:
As of this evening, the page had raised $13,828 to fund the fight for waterfront homeless services. The original campaign that’s fighting the homeless shelter, Safe Embarcadero for All (note, “safe” versus “safer”), had raised $46,465.When you live nearby, you can go and check it out. I guess it's a nice area to live, but somehow, those rich pricks feel oppressed by the homeless' poverty.
Multiple news outlets on Wednesday revealed wealthy waterfront neighbors were raising money to support a legal fight against a homeless navigation center at Seawall Lot 330, near the Bay Bridge.

Keiser Report analiza los "unicornios muertos", la gran caída de la bolsa y los "bancos zombis":
The Road To 21st Century's Serfodm
But 53 are neither unicorn nor roadkill. They remain alive in the great morass of the economy, successful but lacking explosive growth; or stumbling along with scaled-back ambitions; or barely functioning, like zombie start-ups. There are your weed start-ups such as Eaze, your high-end-grocery delivery such as Good Eggs, and some less high-profile companies that have found their footing as regular businesses such as Plowz & Mowz, a company in upstate New York that’s Uber for plowing and mowing.
The basic economics of moving human beings and stuff around the physical world at the touch of a button is not an obviously profitable enterprise. And even when venture capitalists are willing to buy growth for these companies, they still tend to pay their workers close to minimum wage—especially after considering expenses—and generally don’t provide the nominal security of an actual job.
What the combined efforts of the Uber-for-X companies created is a new form of servant, one distributed through complex markets to thousands of different people. It was Uber, after all, that launched with the idea of becoming “everyone’s private driver,” a chauffeur for all.

"The #Federation Fallacy"
(3 Mar 2019)
Throughout the free software community, an unbridled aura of justified mistrust fills the air: mistrust of large corporations, mistrust of governments, and of course, mistrust of proprietary software. Each mistrust is connected by a critical thread: centralisation.

Considering Amazon barely hides they currently put the "A" in CIA....
Imagine if you will, Nazis making a show about if Nazis didn't lose WWII (which they didn't) and it being one of the most horribly written shows ever even though they're the ones making it.
3 episodes into High Man on The Mountain (or something like that) and it's just absurdity through and through.
Everyone in the show thus far just goes along with absolute absurdity; mostly out of of sheer passivity more than active support it appears, while a few do truly support the absurdity.... but the supporters are all psychopaths that lack a capacity for reason and they're all obnoxiously unhappy and mean.
Considering the Propaganda machine is more than capable of producing decent stories when it wants to, I'm left baffled by not only why this show exist, but it's endurance.
The show thus far seems to just have this to say:
1. Heil Hitler
2. Heil Emperor (the show is really big on stressing sucking liar "Leader" cock)
3. The masses will go along with anything (no matter how absurd)
4. The "system" believes in beating and torturing people for no reason all the time and otherwise just acts like unhappy jerks in spare time. (reminds of some pop fantasy show about Dragons and families that just rape constantly when not busy f'in each other over)
5. There exist a roundabouts 30 second to 1 minute film that really really scares the Axis because never mind their absurdly mean attitudes and actions of no reason, if people ever see this 30 second to 1 minute film it change peoples minds about passivity and collapse their entire power structure.
6. Statist gonna state..... if the film doesn't take them both out, then the Axis will take itself out because much like Highlander, when it comes to State, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
decided with a friend that we shall pummel through and endure at least this first season, but so far, I feel like watching it is more an exercise in taking a look at the levels of absurdity pop culture considers not only "decent", but "worth while".
This show appears like for "adults" I guess is what I'm trying to say.
That darn Poppy is on a world culture rampage on all angles I guess.
