On Devin Nunes' (R - CA) thin-skinned appearance on the internet

(The opinion piece (to put it in the foreground): USA TODAY

(Speaking of Devin Nunes in my previous post, I also found this neat little peace of writing. I'm sure that many of you have heard of Nunes' lawsuit against the alleged «shadow-banning» that takes place on Twitter with fake-accounts mocking his name or personality, such as «Devin Nunes' Cow», his «Alt-Mom», his «Skin», his «Emotional Support Dog», and what not (for those who didn't: Fox News - Yes I know it's Fox News, but it doesn't contain any bias, only the facts). Even Conservative news outlets like the National Review have said that his lawsuit was dead on arriva... show more

The background of Devin Nunes' tongue-in-cheek lawsuit

In suing these Twitter users, Nunes listed some of their tweets, thus ensuring thousands, if not millions, more people saw what the lawsuit characterized as “defamation”. By the time Nunes filed the lawsuit, Twitter had already suspended Devin Nunes’ Mom. Devin Nunes’ Cow had more than 1,200 followers.

It didn’t help Nunes’ case that his attorneys never found the true identities behind “Devin Nunes’ Mom” and “Devin Nunes’ Cow”, so pieces of the complaint read as if Nunes’ actual mother and his cow were the perpetrators, turning the lawsuit into a parody of itself.

Don't forget about Devin Nunes' skin (Still thin) and Devin Nunes' Alt-Mom. Honourable mention: Devin Nunes' Ego.

Your freedom requires maintenance!

As a prominent dissident on this network I have long been aware that censorship exists even here in Diaspora. The first time I had an account deleted on me it was on the Cryptospora pod. The podmin did it without any message or warning. Just like that, poof, it was gone. All my data and contacts vanished. All because I was challenging a narrative with a comment he didn't like. Of course I just made a new account, and reconnected with my contacts, but after that I started to keep track of which pods were opposed to people challenging certain narratives. Every time I noticed a fellow dissident having issues with a pod I made a mental note of it. Before long some of them were even messaging me in private, asking me for intel on good pods.

There were also public discussions. Others were offering m... show more

While we acknowledge these pods are basically private property, and that the podmin have the right to run them however they please... When the podmin choose to break federation in order to block out certain accounts, they are making a decision for the users of their pod, on what content they are allowed to see and on who they are allowed to interact with. What is worse is that most podmin who engage in this shadow-banning do so secretively. Without making any public announcement of what they are doing, thereby depriving their users of the chance to know this is going on.

We believe Diasporans should be mature enough to decide on their own what content they want to see and interact with. The d* dev team gave us the block/delete/ignore functions for this reason. We see it as an insult to the intelligence of their user base when podmin make these decisions for them.

That is, "you are in control" only if you start your own pod. (Which is something that anybody with the know how and resources can do.) A podmin is free to run their pod more or less however they please. The majority of Diaspora users however do not have their own pods and are at the mercy of their podmins. Not to be alarmist, as most pods are being run fairly and competently, but there are a few notable exceptions that have distinguished themselves over the years.

You need to put some consideration into the pods you choose to sign up with. Not only does the podmin have the power to censor your posts/comments and delete your account, the podmin also has access to your private data, your email, contacts and private messages. They have a right to deny service to anyone they choose. There's no question, however some podmin have been known to be loose with the private info of users they personally disliked, even publicly disclosing a users email.
