About that "Have you been hacked" thing I posted earlier...

You might want to read this, then go back and look at that article.

This should come as no surprise, but it still sucks big-time: thousands of people who downloaded a random, very popular app called WiFi Finder found that it got handsy with users’ own home Wi-Fi, uploading their network passwords to a database full of 2 million passwords that was found exposed and unprotected online.

Microsoft decides expiring passwords are no longer useful for Windows 10 | TechRadar

Microsoft apparently now believes that having passwords expire – in other words, a system whereby the user is forced to change their login password every, say, six months – is not a useful security measure.

In a new draft piece of security guidance, Microsoft has changed its baseline rules for the next version of Windows 10 (the imminent May 2019 Update – as well as Windows Server) to drop recommendations for “password-expiration policies that require periodic password changes”.

Huawei leak row: Government 'cannot exclude' criminal investigation | BBC News

The government "cannot exclude" a criminal investigation into leaks from a National Security Council meeting.
Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright condemned leaks to the Daily Telegraph about discussions on using Huawei technology for the UK's 5G network.
Ex-Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said the matter was "too serious" for a standard leaks inquiry and said the police must be called in.
The National Security Council have agreed that Huawei can carry out limited development of the 5G mobile phone system in the UK. At the moment, it seems to be limited to a very small part of the infrastructure - aerial dishes, for example.

British intelligence services are saying that there is no evidence that Huawei are a risk, especially on the basis that they are a Chinese company.

Nextcloud 16 becomes smarter with Machine Learning for security and productivity

Bild/Foto

Nextcloud 16 introduces a number of intelligent features designed to make the users’ lives easier and keep data safe. Suspicious Login Detection uses a locally trained neural network to detect attempts to login by malicious actors. Share recommendations suggests people and groups the user frequently shares with and our new Recommendations app adds a list of files and folders the user might be interested in, based on recent activity on these files and other factors.

As this release brings so many improvements, we’ve written 4 other blogs with more details about the main features:... show more

Ex-student records himself using USB Killer to fry college computers....A USB Killer isn’t your granddad’s USB thumb drive. It is an adapted device that can fry an entire computer. Instead of a flash memory chip, its innards contain capacitors and a DC-DC converter that alters the voltage level of a direct current. This is a deadly combination for your average USB port, along with anything attached to it.

FBI agent explains how Julian Assange may escape prosecution. And Chelsea Manning is key. | The Canary

An FBI agent has made it clear that, regarding charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, further testimony from whistleblower Chelsea Manning will be critical to achieving a successful prosecution. Because if Manning keeps refusing to testify to the courts, the US prosecution against Assange would be seriously harmed, if not jeopardised. The agent also questioned the viability of key evidence that could be raised against Assange.

French government releases in-house IM app named Tchap to replace WhatsApp and Telegram use - the app is based on Riot a well-known open-source, self-hostable, and secure instant messaging client-server package

The French government has developed its own end-to-end encrypted instant messenger (IM) app to replace government employee use of Telegram, WhatsApp, and other third-party IM clients.

The app, named Tchap, was launched yesterday, April 18, and is available on the official iOS and Android app stores. A web dashboard is also in the works.

Only official French government employees can sign-up for an account; however, the French government also open-sourced Tchap's source code on GitHub so other organizations can roll out their own versions of Tchap for internal use as well.

The app was officially developed by DINSIC (Interministerial Directorate of Digital and Information System and Communication of the State), under the supervision of ANSSI, France's National Cybersecurity Agency.

The French government plans to enforce Tchap use for any informal communications between government employees, agencies, and some (carefully selected) non-government entities and civilians. The general idea is to keep government communications flowing through internal servers, and... show more

We need to choose either #security or #surveillance.
Fuck surveillance.

Quoting a recent post from Bruce Schneier:
Either everyone gets to spy, or no one gets to spy. And I believe we must choose security over surveillance, and implement a defense-dominant strategy.
