Build a SatNOGS ground station with a Raspberry Pi 3B+ to track satellites


Most of the time a satellite will not be overhead of a single ground station; in fact, it may only pass over a ground station once every few days, massively reducing the amount of information or data we can receive. So we need a network of ground stations. The SatNOGS network solves this by creating a global network of stations that can work together to increase coverage.

SatNOGS is an open-source project that has numerous designs for satellite ground stations, but whichever design you pick, you can join the network that links them all via the web.

A station owner can use the website to browse for future passes of a satellite, and then click a button to schedule for their station to turn on, tune to frequency, and record the pass, sometimes even rotating the antenna on the station to track the satellite. Not only can a station owner schedule an observation on their own station, but they can schedule observations on any station on the global network.

Zunächst einmal ist mir positiv aufgefallen, dass sich Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo reaktionsfreudiger anfühlt. Das liegt wohl in erster Linie an GNOME 3.32. Coming from G+ I still miss a mobile app that is well integrated with my mobile camera and photo management app (Google photos) and to easily allows share photos or links on the go with a few clicks. Since my Raspberry Pi based G+ reposting bot seems to be doing quite well managing my account, I am thinking to keep it around going forward with an expanded role.

Sharing via email is well supported and integrated on any mobile platform and my bot already has its own email address to send out error messages. I could just use this same email address to send pictures or links to the bot for some automated post processing, reformatting and posting to this diaspora account.

An email to social media gateway may sound a bit 1990ies retro, but some things never go out of style 😉

How to install Nextcloud on Raspberry Pi to run your own private cloud-based file sharing, calendaring, notes, etc


NextCloud is a great Dropbox replacement and I use it daily for syncing my notes, calendar, files, etc between my various computers and my phone. I manage and control that data myself. A Raspberry Pi based version means you could test it out at home or even configure it for remote access and run it from home with zero external hosting costs.

A Pi's SD card though may be a bit weak to support lots of long term reading and writing so you may want to hook up an external drive to it.

The fragility of SD cards is the weak link in the Raspberry Pi ecosystem. Most of us seem to have at least one Pi tucked away somewhere, running a Magic Mirror, driving security cameras, or even taking care of a media library. But chances are, that Pi is writing lots and lots of log files. Logging is good — it helps when tracking down issues — but uncontrolled logging can lead to problems down the road with the Pi’s SD card.

Erich Styger has a neat way to avoid SD card logging issues on Raspberry Pi, he calls it a solution to reduce “thrashing” of the SD card. The problem is that flash memory segments wear out after a fairly low number of erase cycles, and the SD card’s wear-leveling algorithm will eventually cordon off enough of the card to cause file system issues. His “Log2Ram” is a simple Unix shell script that sets up a mount point for logging in RAM rather than on the SD card.

I am interested in a few more things, but I don't for example like to be notified multiple times that a new version X of Linux distribution Y is out, for me it's simply my standard OS to work with, not a toy.

Hi, ich bin #neuhier und möchte wissen, ob schonmal jemand #Diaspora für zwei oder drei Nutzer auf einem #RaspberryPi 3B+ erfolgreich eingerichtet hat. Dies wurde meines Wissens nach als vermutete Obergrenze der Kapazitäten eines RasPi angegeben, aber ich konnte dazu nichts über bekannte Suchmaschinen finden. Aufgrund begrenzter Freizeit kann ich es nur an Wochenenden ausprobieren, ein solches System einzurichten; daher vorab die Frage nach Erfahrungen.

"About a year ago, I wrote about measuring air quality using a Raspberry Pi and a cheap sensor. We've been using this project in our school and privately for a few years now. However, it has one disadvantage: It is not portable because it depends on a WLAN network or a wired network connection to work. You can't even access the sensor's measurements if the Raspberry Pi and the smartphone or computer are not on the same network. To overcome this limitation, we added a small screen to the Raspberry Pi so we can read the values directly from the device. Here's how we set up and configured a screen for our mobile fine particulate matter sensor."

I'm thinking that the portability issue could surely be overcome with the Bluetooth and Wifi available on the newest Pi's...

On the sensor being used, it is a Nova PM sensor SDS011 High precision laser pm2.5 air quality detection sensor module for around $18.
