mankinds survival in space and time

what i never quiet understood – mankind’s inability to cooperate peacefully towards survival on this planet – in this solar system – on other planets – in this galaxy – in this universe.

instead of cooperation and bringing the best out of each other – mankind behaves like robber barons – always at each other’s throats.

Libya once more back to war…

On depredating of oneself's dignity - and nationalism

That’s because from the earliest humans onward, we have evolved an instinct to unify in the face of an external threat. Our success on the food chain derives only secondarily from our intelligence. Our primary advantage was our ability to cooperate.

My problem with nationalism is that, left unchecked, it devolves into the spirit of emergency. By placing the logic of “us” above all, it must create thems that must be defeated. It casts about for threats to justify a cult of unity. As Orwell observed, “As nearly as possible, no nationalist ever thinks, talks, or writes about anything except the superiority of his own power unit.”

The Iranians are nationalists; the Nazis were nationalist; Maduro, Chavez, Stalin, Castro, Mussolini, the Kims: They’re all nationalists. So were Washington, Lincoln, Churchill, and de Gaulle. What differentiated the heroes from the villains was how they deployed nationalist sentiments.

Thinking about Thinking

I was thinking about thinking this morning, about the process of thinking - which seems appropriate somehow. How is it that vague notions become concrete concepts? First off, the process to me does not seem analytical. An analytical process is like when you factor an algebra equation, or, synthetically parse through a computer program piecing the functions together. That kind of thought seems to me to be a very minor part of what we do in our minds.

I do not know how novel an idea this may be, but I see most thought, creative thought, as a radically iterative process, much of it spinning just below the level of consciousness, with the more interesting or valued pieces popping up. A nascent notion is somewhat like a dream, or, if dormant, a half-forgotten memory. Then, for some reason, something sets a process spinning, to concretize the notion - not to construct an an analytical root-and-tree-branch structured entity, but rather... show more

The inquiring answer

What would I do without my name?
Would I continue this game?

What would I do without my age?
Would I break out of this cage?

What would I do without my mind?
Would I take a single look behind?

What would I do without my heart?
Would I accept myself or break apart?

What would I do without my origins?
Would I still succumb to my sins?

Any answer you will find in you.
Any answer brings a fresh view.

Waschen oder Wegwerfen

Bild/Foto

Review on «Private Government», by Elizabeth Anderson

But contemporary conditions make simply up and quitting unfeasible for a significant slice of the population — namely, those who are already the most vulnerable. If you need a job as a condition of probation, or if your visa is tied to your employer, or if you’re an immigrant working without documentation, “exit” is impossible without imprisonment or exile.
Oh well, but you can refer such some problems - those for immigrants - to the state: You only need the visa to enter a country, but the company probably doesn't care where you come from as long as you're capable of doing your job well. One can only wonder what would happen to you when the state didn't exist and the company ruled all over you.
As David Graeber makes abundantly clear in his book Bullshit Jobs, the “bureaucracy” we’ve been trained to hate and to associate with the state is at least as common in the corporate world. Going to the DMV kinda sucks, but is deal

How shall the Republican party proceed henceforth?

There’s a reason why Steve Bannon has (ironically) become an inveterate globe-trotter: his revolution quickly found its limits on the home front. Compromise is anathema to practitioners of the paranoid style, and in politics, people who can’t compromise have a hard time making new friends.

_ The Republicans could pick up that ball and run with it, rebranding as the party of misery. There are some downsides though. Politicians don’t have much incentive to make things better if despair and resentment are their most potent electoral weapons._
But if they managed to gather those people for their ideals, they could renew these regions, create prosperity and wealth, so that those people will embrace them due to the positive turnout their election has brought. I mean, you wouldn't turn away from the hand that fed you when you were starving, just because you were no longer hungry. One day, you will be, and then, you will kneel before the hand to feed you again because the new... show more

The Economicst interview with Alt-Right pundit Ben Shapiro

His views are classically religious-conservative. He suggests that transgender people suffer a “mental disorder”; he opposes same-sex couples raising children; he has said (and sort of retracted) that “Arabs like to bomb crap and live in open sewage.”
This is far from Conservative, this is immature and die-hard controversial. You cannot have worthwhile discussions with arguments this way. You can only break his nose and let him pay for the operation.
And then in turn, we’ve fought back against the notion of reason itself. And we’re reverting to a sort of tribalism we see in our politics that's getting quite ugly.
I wonder how you can reasonably argue that a supernatural being like God could exist, and how it could be proven. This would be an intriguing topic to discuss with him.
Of course that’s true. It’s also true that slavery is a universal human institution until its abolition essentially

US-American philosopher Henry David Thoreau on civil disobedience

At first, Thoreau agreed with Emerson’s teaching that social reform begins with the individual. In 1845, he built a hut at Walden Pond on property owned by Emerson. For the next few years, Thoreau lived simply off the land, meditated, and wrote about nature.

In July 1846, the sheriff arrested and jailed Thoreau for his tax delinquency. Someone, probably a relative, anonymously paid Thoreau’s taxes after he had spent one night in jail. This incident prompted Thoreau to write his famous essay, “Civil Disobedience” (originally published in 1849 as “Resistance to Civil Government”).

Thoreau declared that if the government required people to participate in injustice by obeying “unjust laws,” then people should “break the laws” even if they ended up in prison. “Under a government which imprisons any unjustly,” he asserted, “the true place for a just man is also a prison.”
