Who cares? by Mike Brooks – Forthright Magazine> It was just another story in the local newspaper. A schoolgirl accused her principal of sexual abuse. Shortly afterward she was set on fire and after struggling for life for a few days lost that battle too. There was a brief outrage in the community which soon settled down so that the incident became just one more of many. The principal of course denied any involvement with the girl or her death.

Graffiti punished by reading - 'It worked!' says prosecutor | BBC News

In September 2016, an old school house in Virginia, used for teaching black students during the era of segregation, was sprayed with offensive graffiti. The culprits were given an unusual sentence - reading. Two-and-a-half years later, the BBC's Emma Jane Kirby asks whether the punishment worked.

DOJ to overturn work requirement for Medicaid in KY and AR

At issue are rules the Drumpf administration approved in the states obligating some people to work, volunteer, or take classes for 80 hours a month to be allowed to remain on Medicaid.

The rules don't apply to caregivers, parents, and people undergoing treatment for serious illness, but plaintiffs say they are illegal and do not serve the purpose of Medicaid, which is jointly funded by states and the federal government.

The Drumpf administration's argument is that Medicaid could go beyond providing healthcare coverage and instead, through work requirements, help beneficiaries improve their lives by earning more money and securing private health insurance coverage. It notes that people who work are healthier and improving health is another goal of Medicaid.

Trump's sister resigns from court amid tax probes

Full text from Axios:
An investigation into President Drumpf's sister Maryanne Drumpf Barry's finances came to a close upon her retirement as a federal appellate judge, the New York Times reports.
Background: Barry's finances came under scrutiny when an investigation by the New York Times alleged the Drumpfs were involved in tax schemes that increased their inherited wealth. Barry was co-owner of a company established to have the family's money flow through, per the New York Times. She was also nominated to an appellate court by President Clinton in 1999.

From the NYT:
The court inquiry stemmed from complaints filed last October, after an investigation by The New York Times found that the Drumpfs had engaged in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, th

Trump nominee for Deputy AG Jeffrey Rosen uncertain about Brown v. Board ruling

The remark came during Rosen’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, pressed Rosen on Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark ruling that found school segregation to be unconstitutional; and Roe v. Wade, the ruling that affirmed that abortion access is a constitutional right.
Could it be that Rosen probably approves of segregation in schools? I mean, for any rational being, it's without any doubt logical to overcome segregation, since there is no supportable ground to separate people by the colour of their skin.
“Senator, I don’t think that it would be a productive exercise for me to go through the most–thousands of Supreme Court opinions and say which ones are right and which ones are wrong,” he said.
Why don't you just say «Yes», man? This is no question to contemplate, it's a matter of course! For God's sake, racists... show more

SC judge Brett Kavanaugh to teach American George Mason U. in Runnymede, England

The judge, who faced a tempestuous and hugely divisive confirmation process last year over sexual assault allegations stemming from his youth, has been hired by George Mason University to teach the course.

The Virginia college, located in the outskirts of Washington DC, has appointed him to teach a law course on the origins and creation of the US constitution, the university confirmed on 27 March and the Washington Post reported on Tuesday.
How would he continue to do his job in the Supreme Court when he (temporarily?) resided in England to teach the students in England the American Constitution? I mean, would he then do his job via video conferences? A virtual participation in fron of court?
There, four students wrote an op-ed in the Harvard Law Record, saying that an “opportunity to learn about the supreme court might not be equally available to women because many will self-select out of a class taught by a credibly accused s

Contemplating the powers of Checks & Balances

The judiciary should be non-partisan. But it might be too much to expect the judiciary to be completely oblivious to the president’s public scoffing at their neutrality. Drumpf has labeled federal judges as Obama judges, or Bush judges, and asserted that the federal judge in the case involving Drumpf University was biased simply because his parents were born in Mexico.
Well, in the end, we cannot completely believe that judges will always think and decide on a non-partisan base. On the Supreme Court, we speak of a balance of five to four respectively Conservative and liberal judges; out here, in Germany, we recently had the case of a state attorney who was known to follow by an outer right-winged agenda, therefore led investigations into a left-winged group of activists who reached the headlines for having installed a faux Holocaust memorial. What do you think how a non-partisan judiciary was supposed to be created? Well, the only way was to use apparent AI, but this still lies in its fan... show more

Wilmington resident won't be charged for abandoning pet fish

“We take a very dim view of anyone who would abuse any creature great or small and appreciate [The Animal Services Division’s] enforcement of the laws to protect vulnerable animals," District Attorney Ben David said in a news release. "Fish are not protected under these statues, therefore all charges against Mr. Hinson are dismissed.”
Michael Hinson, 53, was taken into custody last week and charged with three counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals and one count of abandonment of an animal after he allegedly abandoned his pet Oscar fish while being evicted from his home on Two Chopt Road in March.

A concept of justice that is only concerned with the social justice of distribution is a contradiction in terms. The justice of distribution of the goods has as its other side the justice regarding the efforts of producing the goods. Justice, rightly understood, has a distributive and a commutative aspect. The disregard of the commutative aspect of justice in favor of the distributive justice is unjust. Such an approach is also irrational since distribution is possible only when there is something to distribute.

Revolutionary justice carried out as NPA hits AFP troops in two engagements in ComVal

Red fighters under the ComVal-Davao Gulf Sub-Regional Command battled AFP troops in two separate engagements in Mabini and Maco towns in Compostela Valley, which resulted in heavy enemy casualty and thus dispensed revolutionary justice against the fascists whose hands are bloodied with the recent murder of two civilians and other serious abuses against the masses in the province.

On April 3, at around 6:45am, Red fighters engaged troops of the 71st IB in Sitio Bagong Silang, Brgy. Teresa in Maco town, where 4 fascist soldiers were confirmed killed and several others, including the Alpha Coy commander 1Lt. Serwin E. Matas, were severely wounded. Earlier, on March 30, three soldiers of the 66th IB were likewise killed in battle at around 9:30am in Sitio Dasuran, Brgy. Golden Valley in Mabini town. Contrary to fake news by the AFP, there was no casualty on the side of the NPA.

Last week, troops of the 71st IB murdered Franklin and Zaldy Tirol, both civilian fa... show more

Racist lawyer spat into flight attendant's face after racist tirade

Judge Nicholas Wood, sentencing at Isleworth Crown Court in the UK, told Simone Burns: "The experience of a drunk and irrational person in the confines of an aircraft is frightening, not least on a long-haul flight and poses a potential risk to safety."
Why the hell did she have to be drunk and Irish? This is such a cliché. Of course not the fact that she was racist, this is rather unusual, but the fact that she was drunk, on a flight, and she even is a lawyer, a business that is required a tad more decency, at least to my understanding. God damn, there are things I wish I had never read in my life.
Burns (50), who is known as Simone O Broin, of First Avenue, Hove, sat quietly in the dock as she was sentenced to six months for being drunk on an aircraft and two months for assault.
Can we assume that she didn't bring her own booze with her? Because then, she cannot be told guilty on her own misdemeanour, because she probably was served the... show more

Maltese criminal justice system at the brink of a collapse

In a draft copy of an evaluation report carried out by Group of States Against Corruption (Greco) seen by The Sunday Times of Malta, evaluators said it was clear Malta needed to increase its capacity to deal with allegations of corruption and other offences involving government officials.

_The report says the criminal justice response can too easily be paralysed where political influences come into play.__

“The police has refused to open cases arguing that no ‘hard’ evidence has been presented to it, even if it was undisputed that legal offshore constructions had been set up under questionable circumstances,” Greco said in the draft report seen by The Sunday Times of Malta.

“The crisis culminated in October 2017 with the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, who had reported extensively about the number of anomalies in the conduct of public affairs in recent years,” the report says.

Abolish the police

San Antonio police officer who was fired after colleagues accused him of trying to give a homeless man a sandwich containing dog feces has won his appeal but hasn't been reinstated.

An arbitrator this month overturned Matthew Luckhurst's dismissal because he wasn't punished within the required 180 days of the alleged incident.

Officers reported the dog feces incident happened May 6, 2016, while Luckhurst was on bicycle patrol. He was notified of his indefinite suspension Oct. 28, 2016.
