Backlash after Ilhan Omar-9/11 reference grows

The video Drumpf retweeted on Friday pulls a snippet of Omar's recent speech to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in which she described the 2001 attack on New York's World Trade Center as "some people did something" and includes news footage of the hijacked planes hitting the Twin Towers.
Remember: This is like sending Trump death threats after he failed to fully punish the attacker at the Unite The Right rallye. It didn't happen. Why? Because left-wingers follow by a codex of minimum decency. The right fails to grow this certain amount of decency. Therefore, Ms. Omar's life is threatened by now.
The Muslim politician also tweeted a quote from former President George W Bush, who said days after the attacks: "The people - and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!"
"Was Bush downplaying the terrorist attack?" Omar tweeted. "What if he was a Muslim."

Bill de Blasio challenges Councilmember Kalman Yeger on Palestine comment

First: A letter to him, published by Mondoweiss.

You speak about Israel providing Jewish safety. Standing up for Israeli apartheid, as you have repeatedly done, does not promote safety. Quite the contrary. Our notion of safety is a city and a world in which all people feel and are safe. Yes, that means safety through solidarity with one another. That means safety by opposing all forms of injustice, which very much includes the injustice of occupation and the denial of a people’s right to live freely in their homes and their land.

In all your remarks, your lack of recognition of the Nakba (catastrophe in Arabic) of 1948, which refers to the expulsion of 750,000 Palestinians from their homes and land during the creation of Israel, reveals a gross disregard for the rights and well-being of the Palestinian people. That is also true about your lack of recognition (and denial)

On the AIPAC and Netanyahu

1. Haaretz:

Netanyahu, for one, certainly doesn’t need another AIPAC speech: He’s been making them for 35 years, since he became Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations. But the lobby’s annual jamboree was a convenient pretext for him to fly to Washington and get the endorsement from Drumpf that he believes will help him in the election.

He called AIPAC a “great organization” and took a few digs (without specifically naming her) at freshman Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who has been at the center of controversy for attacking AIPAC using barely veiled anti-Semitic tropes. But you could see his heart wasn’t in it.

_ To remain viable over the coming years, AIPAC will need to retain the support it still has on the Democratic side and fight to regain that which it has lost from the party’s more progressive wing. A Drumpf-emb

On the viral meme that distorts Quran verses (in relation to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN))

The interpretations of nine verses from the Quran that the meme includes were made by one of the founders of the site, who describes himself as a freelance writer, not a religious scholar. In total, he had offered 36 reinterpretations of verses from the Quran. Several of them have been repeated in online publications since then, illustrating how misinformation persists for years and spreads online.

Muhammad, the founder of Islam, was persecuted, at least in part, for his religious message and had to flee his home in Mecca for the nearby town of Medina. There, he and his followers remained in conflict with the Meccans, and those struggles are referenced in the Quran.

«Apply this country's virtues equally upon every nation in this world», by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN)

I fled my home country of Somalia when I was 8 years old from a conflict that the United States later engaged in. I spent the next four years in a refugee camp in Kenya, where I experienced and witnessed unspeakable suffering from those who, like me, had lost everything because of war.

At a time when we spend more on our military than the next seven countries combined, our global armed presence is often the most immediate contact people in the developing world have with the United States. National security experts across the political spectrum agree that we don’t need nearly 800 military bases outside the United States to keep our country safe.

It must be hard for a true US-American to be citizen to a country that is more interested in either destroying or intervening in a country militarily, than taking care of its people's education. What kind of country is this? I don't know, and I guess that there is no Republican... show more

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN) claims Israel to be historical homeland of Palestine

The Minnesota representative said that “without a state, the Palestinian people live in a state of permanent refugeehood and displacement. This, too, is a refugee crisis, and they, too, deserve freedom and dignity.”

“I support a two-state solution, with internationally recognized borders, which allows for both Israelis and Palestinians to have their own sanctuaries and self-determination,” she wrote. “This has been official bipartisan US policy across two decades and has been supported by each of the most recent Israeli and Palestinian leaders, as well as the consensus of the Israeli security establishment.”

“When I criticize certain Israeli government actions in Gaza or settlements in the West Bank, it is because I believe these actions not only threaten the possibility of peace in the region – they also threaten the United States’ own national security interests,” Omar said.

Jeanine Pirro expelled from Fox News after islamophobic comments

Pirro has not said anything about taking a vacation. She hasn't tweeted since last weekend. All together, the circumstances suggest that she has been suspended by Fox in the wake of her comments.

At the same time, there is no indication that she has been fired from Fox. She is one of the network's highest-rated weekend hosts, well known for her vehement defenses of President Drumpf and attacks against his perceived enemies.

Among many other critics, a Fox News staffer pushed back on Pirro's statements. Hufsa Kamal, a producer on Fox's "Special Report with Bret Baier," tweeted: "@JudgeJeanine can you stop spreading this false narrative that somehow Muslims hate America or women who wear a hijab aren't American enough? You have Muslims working at the same network you do, including myself."

Trump welcomes Jexodus, encourages Democratic Jews to turn Republican

Drumpf has asserted that though Jewish Americans tended to be reliable Democratic voters, the party’s lurch to the left in recent years, as evidenced by its splintering over Omar’s comments, has alienated Jewish voters.

A website for Jexodus only lists a spokesperson, model and former Drumpf campaign staffer Elizabeth Pipko, and no other staff. A description on the website says that Jewish millennials are "tired of living in bondage to leftist politics" and accuses Democrats of taking the Jewish vote for granted.

The president, who himself has been accused of promoting anti-Semitic stereotypes and not thoroughly denouncing hate speech, has positioned himself as a champion of Israel throughout his presidency.

Fox News rebukes its host Jeanine Pirro for comment on Omar

"We strongly condemn Jeanine Pirro's comments about Rep. Ilhan Omar," Fox News said in a statement. "They do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly."

Pirro suggested on her Saturday show that Omar's beliefs about Israel stem from her religion. Omar is Somali-American and a practicing Muslim who wears a religious head-covering called a hijab.

Funnily, there are Muslims in her district who state that she doesn't represent Islam, which sounds about right. I mean, no-one would ever say that David Koresh represented American christianity. It's simply not true, but what else was to be expected from Fox News' hosts? I mean, you can read it later on, I still have an article about Tucker Carlson remaining in my bookmark lsit.

On the people in Minnesota's 5th district, which elected Ilhan Omar

"Anti-Semitism is real in this country," Mohamed Omar, who is not related to the freshman Democrat, said in an interview in a private study, as children nearby hurried to Friday afternoon prayers. But the controversy, he said, is a "distraction."

Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman of Temple Israel, a Reform Jewish congregation that is the oldest synagogue in this city, said many of members of her community have called her over the last month to say they were troubled by Omar's comments.

But, the rabbi added, "in my mind, tweets are not the way that you communicate complex, complicated issues when you are a member of Congress."

This is a sentence that is able to refer to so many topics that nowadays are conversed and discussed via Twitter. 280 letters per message are simply not how you lead a decent conversation on a complex topic.

US Democrats fail to cope with the Ilhan Omar case

McCain, a co-host of "The View," ripped Omar for sending out the message, calling it “trash” and “beneath a sitting member of Congress.”

“Rashida, Ilhan, and Alexandria have at times dared to question our foreign policy, and the influence of money in our political system. And now, lobbying groups across the board are working to punish them for it,” Ocasio-Cortez’s team wrote in a fundraising email that also referenced freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who, along with Omar, is one of the first Muslim women to serve in Congress.

“On one end, we know that there are members who are going to be free. They're going to candid. They're going to be fearless in their approach to getting their message out,” he said. “There are other folks who are going to be more measured and pragmatic, and I don't think we're in a place to condemn one methodology over the other.”

On Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN) and the Republicans

Where a few weeks ago, cable television networks cut to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s live commentary about Drumpf and Russia, this week they carried her uncomfortable words about seething fellow Democrats.

As Pelosi and Democratic leadership have come under pressure to rebuke Omar, for example, three of the party’s presidential candidates — Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) — pushed back. The result was a watered-down resolution introduced on Thursday that did not single out Omar by name and condemned both “anti-Semitism” and “anti-Muslim discrimination.”

White House aides are in the midst of a pressure campaign pushing GOP lawmakers not to support a resolution set to rebuke the president for invoking his national emergency powers to build his border wall. Next week, Drumpf is likely to quash the measure with the first veto of his presidency.

«Against anti-Semitism in the US», by Lee Zeldin (R - N.Y.) & Ted Budd (R - N. C.)

It is OK to have reasonable, legitimate criticism of any government in the world, including the U.S. government and those of our allies, but when it is in the name of that criticism that deep and dark hate towards other people costs innocent people their lives and freedom from discrimination, than silence is especially never an option.

In January, a resolution was passed in the House or Representatives rejecting white supremacy, naming a GOP colleague. The very next day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-N.Y.) placed the resolution on the docket and, on Jan. 15, the entire House of Representatives rushed to the House floor to almost unanimously (424-1) vote in favor of this resolution, including us.

It is time to speak up. It is time to renounce blatant hatred and bigotry in all forms from white supremacy to anti-Semitism. It is time to send a clear, resounding message to the entire world that anti-Semitic and anti-Israel hate will not be tole... show more

Are there double standards for lying before Congress?

Both men pleaded guilty to making false statements to Congress, but Cohen also pleaded guilty to tax evasion, filing false statements on a loan application and hiding an illegal campaign contribution. That last one involved payments to porn star Stephanie Clifford (also known as Stormy Daniels) to buy her silence in the closing weeks of Drumpf’s presidential campaign.

Abrams supplemented that cash with a $10 million contribution from the sultan of Brunei. Abrams gave the sultan’s representative a Swiss bank account number to complete the transaction.

Labels aside, there is credible and corroborated reporting that the Contras killed unarmed men, women and children, committed rape and torture, attacked civilian facilities, such as hospitals and food warehouses, and conducted mass kidnappings. While not all Contra groups were human rights violators, some acted with extreme brutality.

WV GOP office going the Islamophobic way

(Thanks a lot, WV GOP! Now, when some of the oh-so Republican supporters and voters come up with Mr. Northam's blackface scandal, we can adress this incident to counter these highlights. And also, if you want to adress her insensitive decisions and so on (just remind me of them, I tend to forget them), remember that the GOP still didn't kick out Steve King.)
The booth at WVGOP Day, which was called "Republicans Take the Rotunda," also featured a book titled "Readin', Writin', and Jihadin' The Islamization of America Public Schools" and pamphlets titled "Islam in a Nutshell The Muslim Brotherhood," "Interfaith Dialouge or Deception," and "The Four Stages of Islamic Conquest." Not far away were cardboard cutouts of President Donald Drumpf, signs for "Drumpf Pence" and displays featuring West Virginia Republicans.

Delegate Mike Angelucci alleged the House sergeant at arms called all Muslims terrorists in an argument over the poster. "That's not freedom of speech," Angelucci said. "That's hate speech, and it has ... show more

Senate likely to block Yemen bill

“It’s no surprise that the Republican leadership in the Senate would try to use any means to thwart the will of the Congress and thwart the will of the people. It’s just disgraceful,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) said in an interview. “I’ve been around this place for 30 years. When there’s a will, there’s a way. If you want to pass something, you do it. And if you don’t want to do it, you find every excuse under the sun to say why you can’t do it.”

But House Republicans will likely try again to add language condemning anti-Semitism, a move that would put Democrats in an uncomfortable political position to vote “no” on the amendment in order to ensure that the War Powers resolution advances to Drumpf’s desk. If that amendment passes, the measure would face the same obstacle from the Senate parliamentarian.

Democrats and Israel

J Street was set up to counteract AIPAC, the target of Omar’s ire, and push for a more moderate, balanced U.S. policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But it also opposes BDS and some of the positions of farther-left Israel critics. The group dropped its endorsement of Rep. Rashida Tlaib before the midterm elections when it became clear she does not support a two-state solution.

There are a couple of people in the caucus who have come out in favor of BDS, but there’s 230 members who have not. I don’t see that as a sharp divide. What I see is Republicans who, for partisan purposes, are trying to drive a wedge in the Democratic Party.

Talking about cooperation that is needed to make progress in favour of all US-Americans.

This is annoying - I read her comments and they didn't seem anti-Semitic. They seemed simply critical of Israel's foreign policy and lobbying efforts in the United States.

Perfectly valid. Once you apologize for something you didn't do, it subtly weakens your moral authority in the minds of many people that support you.

In my ethical framework, fake apologies are nearly always wrong, both morally, strategically and in terms of efficacy.

One has a moral duty to themselves to be as effective in their own endeavors as possible. Fake apologies ring inauthentic.

Unless lives are at stake, stay away from fake apologies.

Any Democrats urging her to apologize are working against their own inZterests. Shit like this adds up to losses for the Democrats.

At least in my less than expert opinion. Obviously, I'm not a paid political consultant (they gets paid no matter who wins or loses,) I'm just a student of human communication, personal ethics and my own feelings about things. A random dude on the Internet running my mouth.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN) accuses Jewish groups of financing pro-Israel bill

Omar's comments touched upon a long-running, and particularly ugly, thread of the anti-Semitic movement — that Jewish money fuels backing for Israel in the United States and elsewhere. A freshman Democrat, Max Rose of New York, said, "Congresswoman Omar's statements are deeply hurtful to Jews, including myself."

This doesn't answer the question, though. She wanted to know whether Jewish groups fueled campaign donations that now led to this bill which she rejected on her behalf.

And the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee is a non-profit that doesn't donate directly to candidates.

Hm...

"Equating [Omar and Tlaib's] criticism of Israel to Steve King's long defense of white supremacy is obscene (McCarthy said it's worse). In the US, we're allowed to criticize our own government: certainly foreign governments. The GOP House Leader's priorities are warped."
