"Everyone want to keep trace your poor ass"... or Fedora 30 Changes: DNF UUID

Ve-e-ery strange news from RedHat:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/DNF_UUID

DNF UUID

Summary

Right now, we estimate installed Fedora systems by counting unique IP addresses which show up in our updates mirror statistics. We need better data than that. There are some proposals for more complicated systems, but a quick thing we can do is implement a per-system UUID (unique identifier) and count that instead of IP addresses.

This is what openSUSE does — see https://metrics.opensuse.org/ for live stats.

Benefit to Fedora

- Better metrics overall
- Public stats page updated automatically
- Better knowledge of relative use of different variants

Is that normal that a distro wants count you with tracking method even if anonymously?

The separation from counting to tracking is very labile...

The simple and quick way to ~~fuck your ISP,~~ enable obfuscation, bridges and local proxy (Fedora 29 + systemd)

Part 1. Obfuscation

In network security, obfuscation refers to methods used to obscure an attack payload from inspection by network protection systems.
If you want to search something as "obfs4proxy"...
# dnf search obfs4proxy

(...)

NOTHING! Because the right name for obfuscator (v.4) is obfs4.x86_64! (or obfs4)

But don't forget: the right name of this pluggable installed transport is obfs4proxy (man obfs4proxy, etc.)

Well... Just install:
# dnf install obfs4.x86_64

Now stop tor.service:
# systemctl stop tor

... And edit tor configuration:
# nano /etc/tor/torrc

You must add two strings:... mehr anzeigen

Phoenicis PlayOnLinux 5.0 Alpha 2 Released for easy installation of Windows games and software on Linux

PlayOnLinux is a piece of software which allows you to easily install and use numerous games and apps designed to run with Microsoft® Windows®. It essentially customises and tweaks WINE specifically for each supported game or software. So if you are struggling to get one of these supported games or applications to run, you could try PlayOnLinux. It has a more GUI based approach to managing WINE settings too.

It does add some additional complexity in that if you uninstall WINE or PlayOnLinux those applications can break. I used to have lots of trouble when restoring this data between Linux upgrades so personally, I've resorted to just using plain WINE on its own.

But the Alpha release of PlayOnLinux is a major step forward so many may want to try it out.

TWIMC: You can get RPMs with vanilla #Linux 4.19, 4.20 and mainline snapshots in my #Kernel vanilla repos for #Fedora: fedoraproject.org/wiki/Kernel_Va…

BTW: Does anyone know if there is a proper PPA (e.g. enable once and leave the rest to apt) that provides something similar for #Ubuntu?

To clarify the "proper PPA": I know about https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ as well as tools like Ukuu or ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh, but even with those its harder to use than a proper PPA where a regular "apt update" will to the "right thing"™ automatically.

Linus started pulling in changes for #Linux #Kernel 4.21/5.0, thus the "mainline" repos of my Kernel vanilla repositories now ship git snapshots of these for #Fedora 28, 29 and 30. The repo "mainline-wo-mergew" will only get them once rc1 gets released. fedoraproject.org/wiki/Kernel_Va…

WTF!?!

I’m #newhere and pondering what will replace #gplus for me. Interests currently include #3dprinting #opensource #linux #fedora #machining #ev #electricvehicle #electriccars #photography — Also I'm a lapsed #pilot still interested in aviation. I'm also @mcdanlj@mastodon.cloud and u/mcdanlj — I don't really know where I'll end up in the #gplusexodus yet.

I like not having an arbitrary 500-character limit, and markdown is a plus. But finding the signal in the noise is a bit of a challenge here right now. Maybe it's the current influx. Also, really will matter where people and communities I want to interact with end up.

Following the move by upstream Mozilla in switching their Linux builds of Firefox from being compiled by GCC to LLVM Clang, Fedora is planning the same transition of compilers in the name of compilation speed and resulting performance.

#Linux 4.19.8 with the new fix for the data corruption issue in blk-mq is now available in my #Kernel vanilla repositories for #Fedora 28 and 29: fedoraproject.org/wiki/Kernel_Va…
Side note TWIMC: The current kernel from updates-testing contains a fix, too, but it's the older one.

zram - und jetzt?

Bin heute experimentierfreudig.

Wie ich sehe, ist auf meinem #Fedora 29 per Default #zram installiert, aber nicht aktiviert.

Grrr, just upgraded #Fedora (F27->F29) on the laptop and now it won't connect to the Wi-Fi. Otherwise everything went very smoothly and I haven't discovered any breakage yet.

Desktop/Server tomorrow... gulp.

With the recent release of #Fedora 29, Fedora 27 officially is End Of Life (EOL) as of today. I thus removed the F27 repos from my
