Coelacanth Reveals Secrets of Vertebrate Skull Evolution
A new study into one of the world’s oldest types of fish, the coelacanth, illuminates for the first time the development of the brain and skull of this iconic animal and provides new insights into the evolution of the vertebrate skull.
Coelacanths are a group of primitive deep-dwelling fish closely related to tetrapods, four-limbed vertebrates including amphibians, mammals and reptiles.
They were thought to have been extinct for 70 million years, until the accidental capture of a living specimen by a South African fisherman in 1938...

A New Paper Reveals The Amazing Evolution of The Human Face
The human face is unique yet universal, mechanical yet expressive, modern yet ancient. For over 4 million years, our features have slowly morphed into what we see today in the mirror, a brief stop on the way to who knows what.
From early hominins to modern Homo sapiens, a new review written by leading experts traces the history of the human face across millions of years, as landscapes, climates, and cultures come and go.
Like many before them, the international team agrees that diet and climate were important factors in shaping the human face. Still, there's another element they think is too often overlooked: social necessity...

Scientists have implemented human genes in monkey's brain

Now scientists in southern China report that they’ve tried to narrow the evolutionary gap, creating several transgenic macaque monkeys with extra copies of a human gene suspected of playing a role in shaping human intelligence.

According to their findings, the modified monkeys did better on a memory test involving colors and block pictures, and their brains also took longer to develop—as those of human children do. There wasn’t a difference in brain size.
Hasn't it already been proven that the actual size of a brain doesn't determine its power, its efficiency or someone's overall intelligence? I may recall having heard something like this.
Instead, several Western scientists, including one who collaborated on the effort, called the experiments reckless and said they questioned the ethics of genetically modifying primates, an area where China has seized a technological edge.
The everlasting ethics debate in sicence...... show more

Archaeologists discover new human species

The small-bodied hominin, named Homo luzonensis, lived on the island of Luzon at least 50,000 to 67,000 years ago. The hominin—identified from a total of seven teeth and six small bones—hosts a patchwork of ancient and more advanced features. The landmark discovery, announced in Nature on Wednesday, makes Luzon the third Southeast Asian island in the last 15 years to bear signs of unexpectedly ancient human activity.

“This new discovery made me thrilled,” Yousuke Kaifu, a paleoanthropologist at Tokyo's National Museum of Nature and Science who was not part of the new study, says via email. “It further highlights remarkable diversity of archaic (primitive) hominins once present in Asia, in a way beyond my expectation.”

“ [If]in the future, colleagues are able to show that we were wrong because the fossils can enter one of the already known hominin species, we will just lump it and forget about it, but in the meantime, I am convinced it is the way

#PlanetWissen #Pilz #Pilze #Sammler #Gift #Giftpilze #Evolution #Schimmelpilze

In adaptive radiation, many different species evolve from a single ancestor species. Each new species evolves to exploit a different niche, such as food source. In the example above, Hawaiian honeycreepers evolved a range of bill forms in response to available food sources on the Hawaiian archipelago. Illustration by Jillian Ditner, photo by Ashlyn Gehrett.

Why Evolution Goes Wild on Islands: The Science of Adaptive Radiation
The process that creates these many different forms stemming from the same original bird is called “adaptive radiation,” and it has confounded past generations of seasoned naturalists and expert ornithologists. Yet however perplexing, a deeper look at adaptive radiations reveals that these birds are wondrous examples of the power of evolution to create new forms. Among the most spectacular extremes of bird evolution, these explosions of avian diversity are worth understanding, celebrating, and conserving.
Evolution goes into overdrive to fill unoccupied niches...

Two Species of Crow Are Evolving Before Our Eyes in Europe
Two European crows that look quite different from each other are actually diverging from a single species, right before our eyes. In Western Europe, it’s the inky-black carrion crow (Corvus corone). In the east, the grey hooded crow (C. cornix).
They overlap in a very narrow zone running along the River Elbe in Germany, where they sometimes mate with each other to produce fertile hybri... show more

On the linguistics of cuisine

First came agriculture and early forms of food processing like fermentation, which delivered meals that were easier to chew. No longer were humans relying so heavily on tough meats, roots and berries. And as a result, newly pampered humans ended up with a different kind of bite. Their teeth were no longer worn down so much, and they maintained more of the natural overbite that they were born with, with teeth of the top jaw overlapping the bottom teeth.

"There are just a few too many gaps for me to think that this is a genuine connection" between dietary changes and language, he says. The researchers didn't look at languages of hunter-gatherers of the Americas, he says, some of whom use labiodental sounds that didn't come from European languages.

Why homeopathy is successful despite scientific contradiction

He believed that if medicine was to move from sequential delusions towards effective truth, then we should not just look at why each successive medical theory was wrong, but to come up with general reasons why doctors and their patients continually make mistakes about what is effective and what is not.

People inevitably seek treatments when symptoms are at their worst. It is equally inevitable that we will subsequently have better days, even if our chosen treatment was ineffective. Jumping to conclusions, based on simple experiences of treatments, can quickly lead us to error. This point may appear trivial, and yet it is the foundation for belief in all superstitious and pseudo-scientific treatments.

Such a notion of dilution resulting in larger effects is counter to our everyday understanding of the world. You do not make coffee stronger by diluting it. You do not get drunk on shandy. Because all homeopathic remedies are essentially identically inert pills, homeopaths are fr... show more

In an Evolutionary Twist, These Worms Have Independently Started Regrowing Their Heads
As superpowers go, being able to regrow your own head has to be way up there with the best of them, and researchers just discovered four new species of worm that can pull off this amazing regenerative trick.
Not only that, but the new study reveals that this ability evolved fairly recently and independently of other species – and that knowledge could be crucial in working out where this regrowth ability comes from in the first place..
