Two fact-checks on the Notre Dame burning yesterday
1. Misleading tweet by Faith J. Goldy, trying to allege jihadists for arson: Truth Or Fiction?
However, the second tweet received under two dozen shares, while the misleading one was shared thousands of times. Moreover, when screenshots of the tweet migrated to platforms like Facebook, they lacked a live link to the article, the “correction,” and the complete headline which clearly contradicted Goldy’s claims.
Old news stories with headlines that do not specify a timeframe are often weaponized by disinformation purveyors to great effect, as many people cannot or will not read the linked story because of time constraints or a paywall. Newsrooms can avoid this and other pitfalls by changing the headlines on old stories and clearly labeling publishing dates. We detail this and other easy methods for stopping or slowing the spread of weaponized disinformation and corrosive propaganda here.
2. Fabricated low-quality video alleges Muslim of starting fire in Notre Dame: PolitiFact
The 18-second clip shows a man walking in one of the cathedral’s towers not long after the fire started. The video’s caption says: "No workers present at the time that the Notre Dame Cathedral fire started......So who is this guy dressed in Muslim garb??"
The person in the picture isn’t dressed in "Muslim garb" — the person is a firefighter.
The clip was plucked from CNBC’s three-hour livestream of the fire and can be seen around the 42-minute mark.
The clip is from an authentic media live stream of the Notre Dame fire, but displays a lower-quality and cropped version that doesn’t allow the viewer to clearly see it was a firefighter. The clip also doesn’t last long enough to show other firefighters who show up in the same area moments later, and is cropped to omit the water hoses being used to fight the fire.

Understanding Wikipedia as a social network to imagine the struggle of fighting trolls there
It is also a place where editors can experience relentless harassment. In 2016, Pax Ahimsa Gethen, a trans male Wikipedian, was persistently hit with personal attacks over several months. Gethen, 49, who uses the pronouns “they” and “them,” said the anonymous harasser posted that they were “insufferable” and “unloved,” that they belonged in an internment camp and that they should kill themself. Gethen said the user also publicly posted their deadname, the name they used before transitioning.
Sydney Poore, a community health strategist with the foundation, said that when the free encyclopedia was established in 2001, it initially attracted lots of editors who were “tech-oriented” men. That led to a culture that was not always accepting of outside opinions, said Poore, who has edited Wikipedia for 13 years.
According to anonymous interviews described by the foundation, users have had pornography posted on their personal Wikipedia userpage and emailed to them. Camelia Boban, an editor on Italian-language Wikipedia, said another user once publicly used language to suggest she was a prostitute.

White Nationalism hearing escalates as right-winged pundit Candace Owen's comments on Hitler were heard
Both sides of the aisle were eager to note just how forcefully, at least superficially, they condemned white nationalism. Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) opened the hearings by saying it was “sadly necessary to examine an urgent crisis in our country.” Ranking member Doug Collins (R-GA), meanwhile, claimed that House Republicans had “led the chamber’s unequivocal revocation of white nationalism.”Guess who has committed more crimes in the meantime: Unite The Right, or the Black Identity Movement? I guess that even the police has committed more crimes than those BI Extremists...
Some of those testifying did address glaring problems in the current approach to combating white nationalism. Eileen Hershenov of the Anti-Defamation League noted how fringe online communities like Gab and 8chan had created “24/7 white nationalist rallies.” Kristen Clarke of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law asked why the FBI had devoted resources to investigating Black Identity Extremists while allowing white supremacist movements to grow at an alarming rate.
Owens responded by claiming Lieu was racist. “I think its apparent that Mr. Lieu thinks that black people are stupid and will not pursue the full clip in its entirety,” she said before Nadler cut her off.If I am not mistaken (I didn't watch it (yet)), this is the video one has to watch to hear her remark in full length. I will leave it for those who are interested in hearing how much she was distorted during the hearing, although I don't believe it can become any better than her stating Hitler only wanted to make Germany great again by extincting minorities to maintain an ethnically clean Herenmenschen society: USA TODAY and video of hers
What can be said at the least it that those who are responsible for the surge in hate crimes have exposed themselves during the hearing. So to say, the hearing was worth it because now, we know that the Republicans will stay the major threat to a safer society. Beside fearmongering, whitewashing their own and making false claims against Democrats, they had nothing to present. Thanks a lot.

Petition to ban Swedish Youtube star Pewdiepie didn't surprise him at all
Felix went to counter the allegations of instances in which he had been accused of propagating white supremacy. Some of them, according to the Felix, were fake and didn't happen at all, while the others he explained by saying that hey happened a long time ago.The article from WSJ: Wall Street Journal
The response comes after Maria Ruiz's petition, which called for putting a stop to normalizing white supremacy on the internet and referred to PewDiePie's channel as hotbed of fomenting white-supremacist ideas, gathered over 77,000 signatures.
This is not the first time that the Swedish content-creator has faced flak for racism and white-supremacist content. In 2017, US's Wall Street Journal uncovered nine videos and clips of the Swede in which he can allegedly be seen displaying anti-Semitic and racist content.

Motel 6 to pay $12 mn in order to avoid lawsuit filed by state of Washington
The budget motel operator illegally shared the personal information of about 80,000 customers for more than two years, resulting in a "targeted" ICE investigation into guests with Latino-sounding names, the Washington state attorney general's office announced Thursday.Welcome to the US - where you can be arrested for having a Latino-sounding name, although you legally live in this country and work for a living to support your wife and your five children. You better be white.
"Each time Motel 6 released a guest list, it included the private information of every guest at the hotel without their knowledge or consent, violating their expectation of privacy," Attorney General Bob Ferguson's office said in a statement. "The Motel 6 guest information disclosures led to significant harmful consequences, including the detention and deportation of many guests and the suffering of their families."
"ICE agents approached him in the hotel's parking lot, detained him and deported him some days later. His wife had to retrieve the presents and his other belongings from the Motel 6 after his arrest," the attorney general's office said. "The man was the sole provider for the household, and his wife is currently struggling to support their toddler and four other children."

South Africa downgrades embassy to Israel, subsequent to op-ed by former ANC minister Ronnie Kasriels
First, the op-ed, published by The Guardian:
Israel’s repression of Palestinian citizens, African refugees and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza has become more brutal over time. Ethnic cleansing, land seizure, home demolition, military occupation, bombing of Gaza and international law violations led Archbishop Tutu to declare that the treatment of Palestinians reminded him of apartheid, only worse. The question is what their reasoning was, why did they cancel this event? Did they publish a statement about this cancelling? Seemingly not. All I found was this article published by Hyperallergic, but beside this - nothing.
Last week, a public meeting in Vienna where I was scheduled to speak in support of Palestinian freedom, as part of the global Israeli Apartheid Week, was cancelled by the museum hosting the event – under pressure from Vienna’s city council, which opposes the international movement to divest from Israel.
By contrast, Netanyahu’s Likud is desperately courting extremist parties, and abandoning any pretext of negotiating with the Palestinians. His plan to bring an extremist settler party and Kahanist terrorist party into his governing coalition is obscene. His most serious opponent is a general accused of war crimes in Gaza. As long as a repressive apartheid-like regime rules, things will only worsen for Palestinians and Israelis too.
Now for the actual report, published by African News Network:
Sisulu also announced on Thursday in an address to the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in Johannesburg that eventually, Israel would no longer have an ambassador in South Africa. Sisulu told SAIIA that the ruling party ANC already had “no relations with Israel” and would like the government to adopt that position as soon as possible. To break up relations with a nation when it comes to disliking the country's policy in any terms is never a worthwhile decision. This way, you are going to change nothing, but even have less influence in the decision-making itself. What you do is a fatal mistake in many regards.

International outrage over Bruneian death penalty law for LGBT people
"Even before syariah law, LGBT+ people could be prosecuted under civil law," Zoe told the Thomson Reuters Foundation, which is identifying her by only one name for her protection.
The laws, elements of which were first adopted in 2014, could see LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and related communities) people whipped or stoned to death for same-sex activity. Some aspects of the laws will apply to non-Muslims.
"It is seriously regrettable that Brunei's decision contravenes a number of international norms on human rights," New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters said in a statement on Sunday (March 31).
The Thompson Reuters Foundation has also listed some of the worst countries for sexual minorities:
The move will make it the seventh country to impose the death penalty for same-sex relationships, according to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA). Many more criminalise homosexuality.Shouldn't this worry us? Normally, yes. So, what is the reason why are they still in there? I demand their permanent and immediate exclusion from the United Nations until they revoke their discriminating and outright inhumane legislature.
1. Six United Nations member states already impose the death penalty for consensual same-sex acts - Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Nigeria, Sudan and Somalia. Mauritanian law allows for a sentence of death by stoning, but the country has a de facto moratorium on capital punishment.
8. The United States has moved to roll back protections for LGBT+ people under President Donald Drumpf, whose administration also hopes to bar many trans people from serving in the military.

White House whistleblower alleges former employer of humiliation
In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Tricia Newbold said her supervisor moved files to a shelf beyond her reach after she complained about the decision to grant security clearances over the objections of senior staffers. At least she knew that she was doing something right. Someone who has to step down one's standards to such some immature mockery has lost not only all decency, but also all high ground to claim he was being done wrong.
"It was definitely humiliating," said Newbold, a manager in the White House’s Personnel Security Office, who has a rare form of dwarfism. "... But it didn’t stop me from doing what was right."
"The protection of national security is not a Democratic issue or a Republican issue, it's an American issue,” said Newbold, who was not speaking in her official capacity. "And we as security professionals owe it to make all our recommendations in the best interest of national security."

19-year old dies for having knocked at the wrong door while being black
"He pleaded for his life. He was like, 'Hold on, I am sorry, I am sorry' and the dude shot him," a witness said. You don't protect your family when you behave like a mad paranoid and shoot down innocents. He was not involved in his truck theft, he didn't do anything to him. He even cried that he was sorry, there was no need to shoot him down. But as it seems, gunning down others when feeling offended must be a usual action in the US, land of the free and of a party that thinks that more guns will create more safety. This is some fucked-up shit.
"He has five kids, he was literally protecting his family. His truck was stolen earlier this week. Right now, that's all they're trying to do is protect their family," Makayla Johnson said.

Is Israel moving towards the far right wing?
In fact, just last May, Israel passed a nation-state law, which ended once and for all, any supposed confusion about Israel's identity. The new law openly declared Israel as "the nation state of the Jewish people", completely disregarding the Palestinian people and marginalising their rights, culture, language and history.Ehhh.... Ok?...
Camus, himself, has expressed his admiration for Israel on a number of occasions. In December 2017, after Donald Drumpf moved the US embassy to Jerusalem, he tweeted: "Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Israel is a model of resistance. We must make Europe a greater Israel".
"There is nothing wrong with preserving our own Judeo-Christian civilization. That is our duty […] Look at Israel, learn from Israel; Israel is an island in a sea of Islamic barbarism. Israel is a beacon of freedom and prosperity in a region of Islamic darkness. Israel refuses to be overrun by jihadists. So should we."
Both Wilders and Robinson have received money from the pro-Israel think-tank, the Middle East Forum, to offset their legal costs after they were charged with incitement of hate against Muslims.

Mother to fatally shot son Antwon Rose II. still fighting for justice
Former East Pittsburgh police officer Michael Rosfeld fatally shot Rose in the back, arm and side of the face as the 17-year-old fled from an unlicensed taxi that Rosfeld had pulled over following a drive-by shooting.
The teen "was unarmed, and he did not pose a threat to the officer or to the community, and the verdict today says that is OK, that is acceptable behavior from a police," Merritt added.
Zaijuan Hester, 18, who was in the car with Rose before he was killed, pleaded guilty last week to charges related to the drive-by shooting.

Why fascists have always been trolls
The Nazis were dedicated trolls who weaponized their insincerity to take advantage of liberal societies ill-equipped to confront them. This was not done just for political advantage—rather, the insincerity itself was a moral act, an expression of contempt for the weak.
The original Nazis were open about their intentions, but their strategic insincerity created a fog of doubt that allowed observers to avoid the obvious. In 1922, The New York Times infamously declared that many believed “Hitler’s anti-Semitism was not so genuine or violent as it sounded, and that he was merely using anti-Semitic propaganda as a bait to catch masses of followers and keep them aroused, enthusiastic, and in line for the time when his organization is perfected and sufficiently powerful to be employed effectively for political purposes.” In 1930, even after the Nazis had become the second-largest party in the German legislature, the Times assured its readers that “there is no present basis for assuming that the Nazis will attempt to make anti-Semitism a militant issue in their legislative program.”
And now, they do the same thing again, claiming that all this right-winged trolling via memes on the internet was just childish behaviour and could be taken with a grain of salt. Of course, history never repeats because people learn from the past, am I right? Of course I am, human evolution is flawless in its zenith that has reached in the 21st century, also nicknamed the era of anthropocene.
“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words,” wrote Jean-Paul Sartre in his 1946 essay “Anti-Semite and Jew.” “The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors.”

On the aftermath of an underfunded judiciary system
Evans’s record against Flowers is 1–5. First, he obtained a conviction that was set aside by the state appeals courts because of misconduct designed to confuse and mislead the jury—he introduced evidence of crimes that were not before the court; implied that he had evidence that a defense witness had lied when there was no such evidence; and told the jury about “taped statements” by Flowers that didn’t exist. In the next two trials, he obtained convictions by engaging in the precise misconduct alleged in this case: intentionally using race to skew the jury against Flowers, who is African American.
If challenges by a prosecutor (or, less often, a defense lawyer) seem to follow a racial pattern, opposing counsel may allege a “prima facie” case of discrimination; if the judge agrees that there is a questionable pattern, he or she convenes a “Batson hearing,” in which the lawyer using the challenges is allowed to give a “non-racial” reason for each challenge.

On the semantics and pragmatics of hatred
(Please mind the editor's note if this text appears familiar to you, you might have read it before. Trump has also spoken positively about the manifesto the Christchurch shooter has written and published. He doesn't think that White Nationalism was an actual threat, in the country that is home to the KKK and Madison Grant. One should really know about one's country's history and presence. Trump, on the other hand, is part of the problem, altogether.)
This seems to be part of a broader developing idea: ignore the tweets. Ignore Drumpf’s inflammatory language. Ignore the words. What counts is the policy outcomes. People took Drumpf’s “American carnage” inaugural address seriously, but after an exhausting year, it’s tempting to find an excuse to stop listening.
Politics is persuasion as well as coercion. Immediate policy outcomes mainly have to do with coercion: who is taxed, regulated, expropriated, imprisoned, deported, conscripted, what wars are fought, who is kept out of the country by force of arms. This can’t be neglected, of course. The early theorists of “deliberative democracy” in the 1990s seemed to overestimate the importance of speech in politics, imagining a world in which high-minded parliamentary debate on the floor of the legislature regularly changes lawmakers’ minds and supersedes partisan positions, or in which voters engage in jury-like deliberations forever, never reaching a vote or the coercion that follows.
The generations of work that created the liberal international order can’t be undone in a year, but Drumpf has made an impressive start, antagonizing democratic allies (other than Israel), praising autocratic rivals (Russia) and the turn to autocracy in unstable allies (the Philippines), and conveying unmistakable contempt to countries in Latin America and Africa.
Drumpf’s tweet that his “I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!” [sic, sic, sic] isn’t a set of mere words to ignore; they’re words that affect the world, and to all evidence convey a sincere willingness to start a disastrous war to prove his own manhood.
Fox News’ constant public delegitimation of the civil service matters. It matters in particular for the Russia investigation, of course. Drumpf means to push out anyone who isn’t on “his team,” in a way that the FBI and the Department of Justice are really not supposed to be, and that process is underway in front of our eyes. But it also matters more broadly for the character of the American state and bureaucracy. By discouraging professionals and encouraging politicization, Drumpf is already changing the civil service by his speech.
Drumpf’s words have sent the message of “anything goes” to ICE and “you should be scared” to those who might be vulnerable to ICE. Both messages have been heard. ICE has become so aggressive in its tactics that a federal judge described it as “treatment we associate with regimes we revile as unjust, regimes where those who have long lived in a country may be taken without notice from streets, home, and work. And sent away.”
In their important new book How Democracies Die, the political scientists Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt point to the delegitimation of the independent press as one of the key warning signs of a genuine would-be autocrat. They note the parallel between Drumpf characterizing the media as the “enemy of the American people,” his expressed desire to “open up” libel laws, and his “fake news” campaign and the words that preceded action in democratic breakdowns elsewhere. We don’t know how far Drumpf will be able to go in his attempts to suppress the media, but we know that he’s persuaded millions of Republicans to let him try.
But all those presidents put forward a public rhetorical face that was better than their worst acts. This inevitably drives political opponents crazy: they despise the hypocrisy and the halo that good speeches put on undeserving heads.

The mysterious deaths of two young BLM protesters in Ferguson, Missouri
Police say there is no evidence the deaths have anything to do with the protests stemming from a white police officer’s fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, and that only two were homicides with no known link to the protests.
— Edward Crawford Jr., 27, fatally shot himself in May 2017 after telling acquaintances he had been distraught over personal issues, police said. A photo of Crawford firing a tear gas canister back at police during a Ferguson protest was part of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage.
Bush said her car has been run off the road, her home has been vandalized, and in 2014 someone shot a bullet into her car, narrowly missing her daughter, who was 13 at the time.

Donald Trump not a white supremascist, says acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney
Wallace asked if Drumpf has considered making a major speech “condemning anti-Muslim, white supremacist bigotry?” because of the criticism he has faced.
“The president is not a white supremacist. I’m not sure how many times we have to say that,” Mulvaney replied.
This doesn't answer the question, though; when is Trump going to speak out decidedly against racism, Islamophobia, bigotry and discrimination of minorities? When?
“And to simply ask the question every time something happens overseas or even domestically, to say, ‘oh my goodness, it must somehow be the president’s fault,’ speaks to a politicization of everything that I think is undermining sort of the institutions that we have in the country today,” Mulvaney added.
No-one said that (explicitly). It was just asked whether Trump is ever going to speak out against these evil-doers, when he is ever going to speak out against the aforementioned causes of such some tragedies. So far, he rather embraced those murderers rather than punishing them verbally; he rather fuels their hatred and grants them justification rather than joining the frontier to declare them as problems rather than the solution.
“When he calls all Muslims terrorists, Mexicans rapists, African Americans criminals, he begins to judge people … based on race, creed, color, nation of origin, sexual orientation,” the Democrat said.

On the Christchurch shooting and Donald Trump
"I spoke with Prime Minister Ardern of New Zealand to express the sorrow of our entire nation following the monstrous terror attacks at two mosques," Drumpf said in the Oval Office on Friday afternoon after first condemning the attack as "a horrible massacre in the Mosques" on Twitter.
Too late, and still not enough, dude.
But asked whether he saw a worrying rise in white supremacy movements around the world, Drumpf said he did not, blaming a small group of people "with very, very serious problems." He also told reporters that he had not seen the manifesto linked to by a social media account that's believed to belong to one of the attackers, which mentioned Drumpf by name and saw him as a symbol of renewed white identity.
Drumpf has many times been accused of using rhetoric that emboldens extremists and dehumanizes his targets. He has used vulgar language to criticize NFL stars who took a knee during the National Anthem. In announcing his campaign, he said Mexico was sending "rapists" across the border into the US. On Friday, at the same event in which he bemoaned the attack in New Zealand, he warned of "invasions" of undocumented migrants coming across the southern border.

Australian Senator blames shooting victims for their own death
“However, while this kind of violent vigilantism can never be justified, what it highlights is the growing fear within the community, both in Australia and New Zealand, of the increasing Muslim presence.
“The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place.”
“They are comments that are going to cause greater division, and they have already led to a number of sites – one by the white supremacist movement – praising the actions of the shooter,” Mr Rajan said.

Fox News rebukes its host Jeanine Pirro for comment on Omar
"We strongly condemn Jeanine Pirro's comments about Rep. Ilhan Omar," Fox News said in a statement. "They do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly."
Pirro suggested on her Saturday show that Omar's beliefs about Israel stem from her religion. Omar is Somali-American and a practicing Muslim who wears a religious head-covering called a hijab.
Funnily, there are Muslims in her district who state that she doesn't represent Islam, which sounds about right. I mean, no-one would ever say that David Koresh represented American christianity. It's simply not true, but what else was to be expected from Fox News' hosts? I mean, you can read it later on, I still have an article about Tucker Carlson remaining in my bookmark lsit.
"Special Report with Bret Baier," tweeted: "@JudgeJeanine can you stop spreading this false narrative that somehow Muslims hate America or women who wear a hijab aren't American enough? You have Muslims working at the same network you do, including myself."

On the (actual) crisis at the border
More than 76,000 migrants were apprehended crossing the southern border last month, the highest February in more than 10 years and the highest month of the Drumpf administration. The number of apprehensions tops any month during the 2014 border surge under President Barack Obama, which no one had a problem calling a crisis at the time.
There is no mechanism to return these migrants home, to hold them after they cross the border, or to remove them once they are in the interior. And word has gotten out. There’s a reason that the subset of migrants that we can’t stop from getting into the country is rapidly growing.
We should question why there is no such mechanism to return them. Because then, we would get to the actual crisis: The irresponsibility of the US ( country founded by immigrants) when it comes to safely returning those people. In the past, they used to simply tell them that they wouldn't get in, and to return from where they've come from. This indeed is irresponsible, regarding the state which the US have in the world, and in their local area. Now, this fatal flaw turns out to reach a stake. The problem is not the flow of migrants reaching the Southern border, but the US' unpreparedness towards those people. Egoism never works out in the long run, as we can see.
Drumpf’s rhetoric may be over the top and his focus on the wall too monomaniacal, but the impulse to get a handle on this is absolutely correct.
The problem is that he doesn't want to get a handle of it, all he doesi s cursing, insulting, lying. This is no method to solve the problem. He only makes matters worse.

VA First Lady Pam Northam under fire for handing cotton to black students
"The Governor and Mrs. Northam have asked the residents of the Commonwealth to forgive them for their racially insensitive past actions," Leah Dozier Walker, who oversees the Office of Equity and Community Engagement at the state Department of Education, wrote Feb. 25 to lawmakers and to the office of Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat.
"Mrs. Northam then asked these three pages (the only African American pages in the program) if they could imagine what it must have been like to pick cotton all day," Walker wrote. "I can not for the life of me understand why the First Lady would single out the African American pages for this — or — why she would ask them such an insensitive question."
Does anyone else wonder that she indirectly told those black students that it was actually the Africans' fault to have been enslaved? I mean, the African-Americans can surely imagine best how it is to be oppressed by people who think they were superior to them. She would've better handed over a white student the cotton and ask him or her whether he or she could imagine how it was to pick cotton or tobacco the entire day, every day of the week. She is pretty racist, isn't she?

On Dr. Seuss and racism in literature
[...] should we continue to teach classic books that may be problematic, or eschew them in favor of works that more positively represent of people of color?
In Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the N-word appears more than 200 times. But for generations, people have argued that the book is vital in order to understand race relations in America in the late 1800s. And the trope of Jews as greedy and money-hungry is pretty clear in The Merchant of Venice. Yet Shakespeare is hailed for his keen understanding of human nature that continues to be relevant today.
"Not engaging [with problematic texts] at all runs too great a risk of not learning or understanding where the problems lie," says Larissa Pahomov, who teaches English at a high school in Philadelphia. "I believe there is a way to look at material that is stereotypical [and]racist and identify it for what it is, and then hopefully, in doing so, neutralize its effect."

Trump administration to put effort into global decriminalisation of homosexuality
The goal is to push for decriminalisation in parts of the world where it is still illegal to be gay, such as a handful of nations in the Middle East and Africa.
Since taking office in January 2017, Mr Drumpf has supported numerous anti-LGBTQ+ policies and withdrawn other protections for homosexual American citizens.
5. The Drumpf administration attempted to expand circumstances in which federal contractors and private employers could cite religious freedom as a reason for discrimination.

Jair Bolsonaro: Slayer of the indigenous people
“With Bolsonaro, the invaders are feeling more at ease,” Bitete Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau, who lives on an Indigenous reserve, told The Intercept by telephone.
Last month, the image of a bullet-riddled metal plaque reading “National Indigenous Foundation, Protected Territory” made the rounds on WhatsApp, Brazil’s most popular messaging app. The sign marks the entrance to one of several villages in the vast Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau Indigenous reserve, in a lawless region of the Amazonian state of Rondônia, near the Bolivian border.
Days after signing the decree, Bolsonaro tweeted a video clip of another one of his ministers who argued in a cable news interview that many of the existing Indigenous reserves were established using fraudulent documents, and called the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples “spurious” and “treasonous.”

On the Rohingya crisis, and late justice
Today, more Rohingya reside outside Myanmar than inside the country. The diaspora initially comprised Rohingya uprooted by decades of violence and institutionalized discrimination — including sporadic military campaigns and a denial of citizenship. This longstanding exodus has established outposts around the globe, including refugee camps in Bangladesh, as well as communities resettled in America, Europe and Australia.
For example, Rohingya-led news sites like the Kaladan Press Network, established in Bangladesh, and Rohingya Blogger, established in Germany, regularly report on violations perpetrated against the community in Myanmar and Bangladesh.
The new Rohingya diaspora also has its own movements, groups like the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, which advocates, among other things, for more Rohingya involvement in running the camps in Bangladesh.

#Jerusalem has got a discrimination problem
Like many Palestinians, he had experienced suspicion and racism before in Jewish-majority west Jerusalem. Facing discrimination is common for Palestinians trying to rent apartments on the well-maintained west side of the city. Sometimes it’s an upfront “No Arabs” directive from the landlord, but more often it is harder to pinpoint; not getting a call back once an Arabic name comes up, for example.
In the decades since, a deep disparity has grown between the poverty-stricken Palestinian east side and largely Jewish Israeli west Jerusalem: for example, annually only 13% of the city’s building permits issued by the Israeli government are granted to Palestinians in east Jerusalem.

RUIRU, Kenya — Before last year, Richard Ochieng’, 26, could not recall experiencing racism firsthand.
Not while growing up as an orphan in his village near Lake Victoria where everybody was, like him, black. Not while studying at a university in another part of Kenya. Not until his job search led him to Ruiru, a fast-growing settlement at the edge of the capital, Nairobi, where Mr. Ochieng’ found work at a Chinese motorcycle company that had just expanded to Kenya.
But then his new boss, a Chinese man his own age, started calling him a monkey.
It happened when the two were on a sales trip and spotted a troop of baboons on the roadside, he said.
“‘Your brothers,’” he said his boss exclaimed, urging Mr. Ochieng’ to share some bananas with the primates.
And it happened again, he said, with his boss referring to all Kenyans as primates.
Humiliated and outraged, Mr. Ochieng’ decided to record one of his boss’s rants, catching him declaring that Kenyans were “like a monkey people.”

After his cellphone video circulated widely last month, the Kenyan authorities swiftly deported the boss back to China. Instead of a tidy resolution, however, the episode has resonated with a growing anxiety in Kenya and set off a broader debate.
As the country embraces China’s expanding presence in the region, many Kenyans wonder whether the nation has unwittingly welcomed an influx of powerful foreigners who are shaping the country’s future — while also bringing racist attitudes with them.
It is a wrenching question for the nation, and one that many Kenyans, especially younger ones, did not expect to be confronting in the 21st century.
Kenya may have been a British colony, where white supremacy reigned and black people were forced to wear identification documents around their necks. But it has been an independent nation since 1963, with a sense of pride that it is among the region’s most stable democracies.
Today, many younger Kenyans say that racism is a phenomenon they largely know indirectly, through history lessons and foreign news. But episodes involving discriminatory behavior by the region’s growing Chinese work force have unsettled many Kenyans, particularly at a time when their government seeks closer ties with China.

“They are the ones with the capital, but as much as we want their money, we don’t want them to treat us like we are not human in our own country,” said David Kinyua, 30, who manages an industrial park in Ruiru that is home to several Chinese companies, including the motorcycle company where Mr. Ochieng’ works.
Over the last decade, China has lent money and erected infrastructure on a sweeping scale across Africa. To pay for such projects, many African nations have borrowed from China or relied on natural resources like oil reserves. And when tallying the cost, African nations have generally focused on their rising debts, or occasionally on the exploitative labor practices of some Chinese firms.
But here in Nairobi, concerns about racism and discrimination are a growing part of the conversation about China’s expanding presence.
In Nairobi, workers in their 20s and 30s swap stories of racism or discrimination they have witnessed. One described watching a Chinese manager slap her Kenyan colleague, who was also a woman, for a minor mistake.
Other Kenyan workers explained how their office bathrooms were separated by race: one for Chinese employees, the other for Kenyans. Yet another Kenyan worker described how a Chinese manager directed his Kenyan employees to unclog a urinal of cigarette butts, even though only Chinese employees dared smoke inside.
The Chinese population in Kenya is difficult to count accurately, although one research group put the figure at around 40,000. Many are here for just a few years, to work for one of hundreds of Chinese companies. Many of the employees live together in large housing developments and are bussed back and forth from work, leaving little social interaction with Kenyans.

“Because of the isolation and lack of integration, usually they are not very aware of the local situation,” said Hongxiang Huang, a Chinese conservationist and former journalist who has lived in Nairobi. “They do not know very well how to interact with the outside world.”
And many arrive with hierarchical views of culture and race that tend to place Africans at the bottom, said Howard French, a former New York Times correspondent who wrote the 2014 book “China’s Second Continent,” which chronicles the lives of Chinese settlers in Africa.
Accusations of discrimination have even emerged on a major state-sponsored project: a 300-mile Chinese-built railroad between Nairobi and Mombasa. The train has become a national symbol of both progress and Chinese-Kenyan cooperation, though positive reviews have at times been overshadowed by concern over its $4 billion price tag.
But in July, The Standard, a Kenyan newspaper, published a report describing an atmosphere of “neocolonialism” for Kenyan railway workers under Chinese management. Some have been subjected to demeaning punishment, it said, while Kenyan engineers have been prevented from driving the train, except when journalists are present.
It was a particularly explosive claim because during the train’s maiden voyage, with President Uhuru Kenyatta on board, two Kenyan women drove the train to much fanfare.
In interviews with The New York Times, several current and former locomotive drivers agreed that only Chinese drivers got to operate the train, describing a range of racist behavior.

“‘With uniforms on, you won’t look like monkeys anymore,’” Fred Ndubi, 24, recalled his Chinese supervisors saying. Two other workers with him offered the same account.
Mr. Ndubi, who has since left the railroad, said his family had sold about a quarter of its land so he could afford the training needed to become a train operator.
“We just stood there and asked him, ‘How can you call us monkeys?’” Mr. Ndubi recalled.
Sometimes, the racial controversies have unfolded in full public view. Two years ago, a laundry detergent company in China ran a television commercial in which the detergent’s effectiveness was demonstrated by transforming a black man into a light-skinned Asian man. Last year, WeChat, the country’s popular messaging app, apologized after its software was found to translate the Chinese words for “black foreigner” into a racial slur in English.
This year, China’s televised Lunar New Year gala, estimated to reach 800 million viewers, included caricatures of Africans, with blackface and men in animal suits.
When asked about the controversy, China’s foreign ministry spokesman suggested that Western news organizations had blown the matter out of proportion in an effort to “sow discord in China’s relations with African countries.”
Mr. French, the author of “China’s Second Continent,” said that when it comes to Africa, China has had a tendency to dismiss criticism of its conduct by noting that the West, not China, fueled the slave trade and colonized the continent.
But that misses the point, Mr. French said, by ignoring the treatment of Africans today.
“Their experience is that they are being treated in flagrantly disgusting, racialized ways,” Mr. French said.

Kenya, home to more than 40 officially recognized ethnic groups, has long had its own problems with prejudice and ethnic tensions. A disputed election in 2007 led to several weeks of mass violence, much of it along ethnic lines. And Kenyans of Indian and Pakistani descent have long felt secluded from mainstream Kenyan life, although the government has granted them greater official recognition.
But the Chinese presence has added a volatile new element and, at times, the Kenyan government has seemed divided over how to respond. When allegations of discrimination by Chinese employers emerged over the summer, a Kenyan government spokesman suggested that part of the problem lay instead with Kenya’s national work ethic, which he said might need to change.
There are signs that elements within the government may be pushing back. Last month, the Kenyan police raided the Nairobi headquarters of a Chinese state-run television channel, briefly detaining several journalists. The timing struck many as curious: It was the same week that President Kenyatta was in Beijing, raising the question of whether someone inside the Kenyan government wanted to create a diplomatic row.
The experience of Mr. Ochieng’ and other workers speaks to the future of relations between the two countries. He took a job as a salesman, thinking it would secure a prosperous future, but when he showed up to work he found a different reality. The pay was a fraction of what he was initially offered, he said, and it was subject to deduction for a long list of infractions.
“No laughing,” was one of the injunctions printed in the company rules. Each minute of lateness — sometimes unavoidable given Nairobi’s notorious traffic — came with a steep fine. An employee who was 15 minutes late might be docked five or six hours’ pay, he said.
One Chinese manager, Liu Jiaqi, 26, loomed particularly large. At times, he was smiling and good-natured, Mr. Ochieng’ said, but whenever the question of pay came up or something went wrong, Mr. Liu turned on his subordinates.
When Mr. Ochieng’ left a sales brochure behind in the car during a sales visit and had to excuse himself to retrieve it, he said Mr. Liu began crowing, “This African is very foolish.”
But the most painful, he said, were the monkey insults — the kind of dehumanization used to justify slavery and colonization.
Mr. Ochieng’ said he protested several times, but the monkey comments did not stop.
“It was too much,” he said. “I decided, ‘Let me record it.’”
The rant that Mr. Ochieng’ recorded came after a sales trip had gone awry. Mr. Ochieng’ asked his boss why he was taking out his anger on him.
“Because you are Kenyan,” Mr. Liu explained, saying that all Kenyans, even the president, are “like a monkey.”
Mr. Ochieng’ continued that Kenyans may have once been oppressed, but that they have been a free people since 1963.
“Like a monkey,” Mr. Liu responded. “Monkey is also free.”

The day after the video began to circulate widely, Mr. Liu, who could not be reached for comment, was deported. It was an especially stark illustration of the clash between the two cultures, with many adding that it produced a noticeable chill in relations between Kenyans and Chinese people in the capital.
“That video had a big effect,” said Victor Qi, the Chinese manager of a noodle restaurant in Nairobi, adding that business from black customers seemed to fall off after that.
After the video emerged, an official with the motorcycle company called Mr. Liu’s behavior an “unfortunate transgression,” while a Chinese Embassy spokesman said, “The personal talk and personal feeling of this young man does not represent the views of the vast majority of Chinese people.”
Mr. Ochieng’ says he has heard stories of colonialism — “what our forefathers went through” — and worries that the Chinese will take Kenya backward, not forward as the nation’s leaders have assured.
“These guys are trying to take us back to those days,” he said in the tiny room he shares with his wife and 2-year-old son. On the wall hung a poster with a verse from Ephesians. Nearby, on a little desk rested two Bibles, both equally dog-eared with use.
“Someday I will tell my son that when you were young, I was despised because I was black,” he said.

An obituary to the famous Ragitime composer Scott Joplin
He would come to be revered as a ragtime giant, writing such hits as “Gladiolus Rag,” “The Entertainer” and “Maple Leaf Rag.”
Just a teenager, a baby-faced and well-mannered Scott went out in the world, boarding rumbling trains with a steely determination to find gigs in a segregated landscape.
His signature style emerged as a combination of jumpy timing and sweet-sounding piano work. In a widely quoted description, Stark himself would say Joplin possessed “the skill of a Beethoven with the sentiment of a Black Mamma’s croon.” It was a way of saying that Joplin mixed a European classic sensibility with black folkloric music — by way of the piano.

Outcry due to racist yearbook photo puts pressure upon Virginia governor
Northam, who took office a year ago, said in a video posted later on Twitter: “I have spent the past year as your governor fighting for a Virginia that works better for all people. I am committed to continuing that fight through the remainder of my term and living up to the expectations you set for me when you elected me to serve.”
“These racist images are deeply disturbing. Hatred and discrimination have no place in our country and must not be tolerated, especially from our leaders – Republican or Democrat. Northam must resign,” Warren said.
Could we first investigate whether he still holds any racist views, or committed any actions as Virginia's governor that are related to racist views? This would be great, thanks a lot. Just because he shot racist photos in his youth and early adulthood, but this doesn't need to mean he's still such an arsehole. People are able to change, you know?

Jewish groups and Australian Labour Party urge government to ban conspiracy theorist David Icke for preaching hatred
Labor has written to the immigration minister, David Coleman, calling on him to ban Icke from the country on the basis ofhis “extreme antisemitic views, including campaigning for Holocaust denial to be taught in schools”.
In December there was uproar in the US after the Pulitzer prize-winning author Alice Walker recommended Icke’s book And the Truth Shall Set You Free in an interview with the New York Times Book Review.
Now I remember where I've heard his name before! It was about Ms. Walker who recommended on of his pulp (non-)fictional writings!

State of freedom of expression worsening in #Myanmar
Freedom of expression has been worsening since the Nobel peace laureate's administration took office in 2016, with prosecutions creating a "climate of fear" among journalists, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Friday.
However, the government led by de facto civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi had made "only marginal changes" to oppressive legislation and continued to use "overly broad, vague, and abusive laws" to prosecute peaceful speech and assembly, it said.
Laws criminalising defamation, the Official Secrets Act, the Unlawful Associations Act, the 1934 Aircraft Act, and section 131 of the Myanmar Penal Code have all been used against journalists in recent years.
