Security lapse exposed a Chinese smart city surveillance system | TechCrunch

https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/03/china-smart-city-exposed/

Well, we know that the Chinese government is trying to turn the whole country into some sort of huge #Panopticon. We won’t be able to stop that. However, we do have to make sure that such a project doesn’t make its way into our societies. It is therefore absolutely vital that we make it clear that our fundamental rights have to be respected, even when documents and activities are being digitized. The cyberspace isn’t some sort of lawless space where anything goes! And it isn’t us, citizen, who have to get naked in front of the state system in the name of #transparency. Transparency actually means the other way around. #PirateParty #Privacy #democracy #HumanRights

The body of Anarchist Lorenzo Orsetti is accompanied out of Rojava by his comrades

Lorenzo Orsetti (February 13, 1986 – March 18, 2019), also known as Orso and Tekoşer Piling, was an Italian anarcho-communist and antifascist from Florence who fought against ISIL with the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria.

History

Lorenzo was a chef by trade, sommelier and worked in different restaurants in Florence.[1][2] [3]When he lived in Florence, he became interested in the Kurdish conflict, his struggle against the Islamic State and the Rojava revolution, it was there when he met Paolo Andolina, an Italian activist and anarchist who fought against ISIS alongside YPG International. [4]In September 2017 he traveled to Syria where received military training from the People's Protection Units (YPG). «Eastern Europe feels like the nobody of the EU», laments Tomáš Valášek

The feeling that the EU treats the post-2004 accession states as second-class citizens and fails to take them seriously is a major part of the appeal of Central Europe’s populists. This isn’t just something people in the region, far from Brussels, believe. It’s a common refrain among senior, accomplished EU officials from Central European states too.

That sense of otherness matters: We’re more inclined to be patient, seek common ground and make compromises with members of the same family. Outsiders, on the other hand, are prone to be treated with suspicion and prejudice. In the standoff between Brussels and members of Central Europe over the rule of law, it’s clear which approach is in play.

Addressing the unfamiliarity that still holds back East-West relations will be a generational project. But steps such as making sure that textbooks in Central Europe say a lot more about Robert Schuman

If the theoretical end point of #liberal #democracy is a world without #boundaries, #physical or #cultural, then it is a world without #morality. After all, morality is a world of #fences and #gates that #control #human #behavior within the closed #social system. In order for there to be a moral order, there must be order and that must include boundaries. Once the boundaries #lose their #purpose, the fences and gates are simply #gravestones in a #cemetery of a long #forgotten people. No one cares if the kids knock over the grave stones.

We could simply be seeing what #JohnAdams observed. #Democracies always #murder themselves.

The Intercept is creating suspicion and discord among Democrats

It built its reputation by publishing stories based on top-secret National Security Agency documents leaked by Edward Snowden; it also exposed the controversial U.S. drone strike program and revealed how a British intelligence agency sought to digitally surveil every Internet user.

“I think they have played an extraordinary role in covering issues that don’t often get attention from other outlets, and they are often ahead of the curve in identifying issues that may resonate with other progressive voices,” says Congressman Ro Khanna, a progressive who has been on both sides of the Intercept treatment.

The Intercept is almost totally funded by a single billionaire backer, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, who supports the site through parent organization First Look Media. Omidyar, who through a spokesperson declined to comment for this story, appears to live in a different political reality from his own publication. Intercept links are noticeably absent f

Democracy is dissatisfying many people around the world

Across 27 countries polled, a median of 51% are dissatisfied with how democracy is working in their country; just 45% are satisfied.
Ouch. This is a tremendous decline in their belief in democracy. What is to make out of this, beside the fact that democracy is comparably impotent when it comes to persuading people about its advantageous role model in terms of equal opportunities. I guess that people like Pete Buttigieg are right when they say that capitalism is ardently undermining the core values of our democracy, namely equal opportunities, a peaceful contribution of resources for everyone on behalf of the market, and a blooming future for descending generations thanks to mutually social participation of everyone towards it.
Most believe elections bring little change, that politicians are corrupt and out of touch and that courts do not treat people fairly. On the other hand, people are more positive about how well their countries protect free expression, provide economic

Filipinos fine with democracy while living in an autocracy under Rodrigo Duterte

The study released April 29 showed that 69% of Filipinos are satisfied with the state of democracy in the country while 31 percent are not satisfied.
What dissatisfies them with their country's system? Too tidious, too slow, not in favour of their opinion? What is it? Is it the fact that it gave race to a murdering autocrat who coquettes other autocrats like Donald Trump, or because he is sending out vicious vigilantes who gun down people who are suspected to do drugs? What is it?
Aside from the Philippines, nine other countries did not experience significant change in democratic dissatisfaction between 2017 and 2018 — Greece, Kenya, Indonesia, Italy, Nigeria, Hungary, Poland, Australia and Israel.

On Indonesian election

1. Tempo.co:

“Once everything is completed, early in January of 2020 we will have this meeting with the DPR, elections organizers (the General Elections Commission / KPU, Elections Supervisory Agency / Bawaslu, the DKPP), and every other stakeholder,” said the Minister in a written statement on Monday.
Great to hear that they are so quick to evaluate the outcome and the procedure of the election. Although this election was held late in the first quarter of the year, it's reasonable to hear that they are going to evaluate it all in the beginning of next year.
But seriously, why wait so long? Do they need so much time to count all the votes of their country? I know that this country is large and scattered over a vast space of sea on small islands, but still, if they need support, I am sure that the OECD would be delighted to help them out with personnel and such. «Umbrella nine» leaders sentenced to jail

A district court judge jailed sociology professor Chan Kin-man, 60, law professor Benny Tai, 54, and Baptist minister the Rev Chu Yiu-ming, 75, to 16 months each for conspiracy to commit public nuisance. Chu’s sentence was suspended for two years.

Raphael Wong and Shiu Ka-chun were sentenced to eight months while former student leader Eason Chung and Democratic party member Lee Wing-tat were given eight-month sentences suspended for two years.

The activists planned to use civil disobedience tactics and occupy Hong Kong’s central business district in hopes that Beijing would allow Hong Kong voters to choose the city’s leader for the first time in history in 2017.

Sure the Muller Report, but...

I can easily disagree with some things comedian & activist Lee Camp says in this video, but in general, I'm with him. #Democracy in the #UnitedStates needs an E.R. visit then decades of rehabilitation.

A reminder of who the US right is. There is nothing new about #trump's or the #Republican party's #fascism. They have always hated #liberal #democracy and stupidly called it #anti-Christian #communism and #socialism. Today, they say the "deep state" killed Kennedy. But if so, then they and trump are the #deepstate, not the #liberals or the #left.

Wikipedia has major problems in the area of deep politics.Reading between the li(n)es is needed to get the most from Wikipedia. This page details some of the key problems and strategies to overcome them.
In 2013 Jimmy Wales stated that "the biggest issue is editor diversity".This may be just a symptom of Wikipedia's establishment-friendly policies.Their policies about "notability" and "reliable sources" effectively muzzle Wikipedia's potential to speak truth to power by reducing it to a mere on-line extension of the Operation Mockingbird controlled pro-establishment media.Specifically:
Certain truths are unwelcome to the the powers that be - i.e. those that contradict the official narrative of the existing power structures. The more unwelcome such truths, the more Wikipedia articles pertaining to them will tend to be compromised by agents of those structures. For the most threatening topics, Wikipedia's "reliable sources" policy pretty much guarantees that the compromise will be fundamental.

Egyptian parliament votes to extend presidential al-Sisi's rulership to 2030

Deputies also backed other sweeping changes to the constitution including to give the military greater influence in political life as well as granting Sisi more control over the judiciary.
This is how dictatorships are created nowadays. It doesn't take a military putsch anymore, only a parliament full of obedient stooges who will do whatever you tell them.
He won his first term as president in 2014 and was re-elected in March 2018 with more than 97 percent of the vote, after standing virtually unopposed.

The 596-seat parliament, which is dominated by Sisi loyalists, was elected in 2015, about a year after Sisi took office.

General election underway in Indonesia

The presidential race pits incumbent Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and his running mate, Indonesian Ulama Council Chairman Ma'ruf Amin, against retired general and longtime rival Prabowo Subianto and multi-millionaire businessman Sandiaga Uno.

People in two districts of Jayapura, the capital of volatile Papua province in Indonesia's east, were unable to vote after ballots and ballot boxes were not delivered.

Prabowo, who has been accused of human rights abuses, ran against Widodo in 2014, while Uno is a businessman who spent a few months as deputy governor of Jakarta, after the mass rallies against Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (also known as Ahok) who was accused - and later convicted - of blasphemy.

«On the needs Democrats don't adress», by Rahm Emanuel, 44th mayor of Chicago

Here’s my concern. While both these strategies may have something to recommend them, Democrats are missing a crucial third prong. While we are fighting for new rights, we also need to demand a reinvigorated sense of responsibility. We cannot simply promise the country more—we need also to ask more of one another. The Democratic Party is strongest when we challenge the public to give, not just promise the public more of what they get.

Democrats, however, also need to address a crisis bubbling below the surface: the sense that the country is being ripped apart, that red and blue America are alienated from each other, and that America’s higher moral purpose is being shredded by the divisive tenor of the national debate.

We can begin by issuing a simple but powerful call: a policy that requires all 18-year-olds to give at least six months of their life to national service. People from different walks of life, with different ba

Are the US a democracy after all?

That the two sides in that tussle tend to fall along party lines, each preferring the term that resembles their party name, plays no small part in the debate. But members of the conservative group also brought to the table the argument that K-12 social studies should be based on a close, originalist reading of the United States’ founding documents.

These documents are closely examined. While schools can teach material not included in them, they shape the content in standardized tests, and many educators rely heavily on the standards as they craft lesson plans. Student teachers are trained to use them.

The Michigan Department of Education invited Mr. Colbeck to participate in the standards-writing process after he submitted a 13 page critique of a 2015 draft of the document. Mr. Colbeck, a former aerospace engineer who became active in politics through the Tea Party movement, saw liberal bias throughout the standards.
Asked to name the influences on his view of American history,
