IRS to release new deadline for Trump's tax returns next month

Neal, who had set a 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline for the IRS to turn over the documents, said in a statement that he plans to "consult with counsel about my next steps.” He is likely to subpoena the documents at some point and, given the administration’s resistance to subpoenas issued or threatened by other committees, the dispute is expected to wind up in court.

"It's already been litigated in the court of public opinion and in the election. The president won it fairly and squarely," he said. "He's the president, and no one cares about ridiculous charges about tax returns and all types of other things Democrats are doubling down on today."

Drumpf is suing House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) to block a subpoena of Drumpf’s financial records from an accounting firm, Mazars USA. Cummings wants the bank records to investigate allegations that Drumpf falsely inflated and deflated asset values to benefit himself, but the president’s lawyers

Trump sues House Oversight chairman Elijah Cummings over subpoena of financial records

The complaint, filed in federal court in Washington, says the subpoena from Rep. Elijah Cummings “has no legitimate legislative purpose” and accuses Democrats of harassing Drumpf and wielding their new majority in Congress to try to stain the president’s standing.
According to him, the subpoena had no legitimate legislative purpose and served to harass him amid the regained political power in Congress. At least to me, there is a purpose, namely to investigate probable tax evasion cases. There was no real need to hide the tax returns from the public, especially since every sitting president did so in terms of transparency and honesty before the American people.
Interesting, isn't it? The failed businessman trying to hide his tax returns. This screams criminality so loud it's almost ripping my eardrums.
The lawsuit accuses Cummings of failing to consult with Republicans on the panel before issuing the subpoena and says he re

WH adviser Stephen Miller to be told to testify before Senate Democrats

Miller was reportedly the author of the idea of sending foreign detainees to so-called "sanctuary cities" to needle Democratic-governed jurisdictions which have declared they will limit their cooperation with federal authorities seeking to round up and deport immigrants in the country illegally. According to a report in The New York Times, Miller became audibly agitated and frustrated in a conference call with administration officials, angry that so many people seeking refuge in the United States were passing the first legal hurdle of having a "credible fear" of persecution if they were sent back to their home countries. Miller, the Times said, citing others on the call, seemed to want immigration authorities to find a way around the law Congress wrote.

"Steve Miller, who seems to be the boss of everybody on immigration, ought to come before Congress and explain some of these policies," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, Democrat of New York, said on CNN's "

HIC Democrats subpoena German lender Deutsche Bank amid Trump investigation

In addition to the Deutsche Bank subpoena, House Democrats subpoenaed other banks — including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Citigroup — seeking information on Russian money laundering. The issuance of the subpoenas was first reported by The New York Times.

“As part of our oversight authority and authorized investigation into allegations of potential foreign influence on the U.S. political process, the House Intelligence Committee today issued subpoenas to multiple financial institutions in coordination with the House Financial Services Committee, including a friendly subpoena to Deutsche Bank, which has been cooperative with the Committees,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the House Intelligence chairman. “We look forward to their continued cooperation and compliance.”

“My colleagues across the aisle continue to politicize the banking industry and set out on partisan fishing expeditions,“ said Rep.

Former Fox News host to cooperate with HOC, receiving exception to NDA

Falzone’s lawyer, Nancy Erika Smith, told MSNBC on Thursday night that Falzone will now comply under an exception to her NDA with Fox News.

[The lawyer for Daniels at the time, Keith Davidson, tells MSNBC that Falzone did contact him while she was working on the story during the campaign with “specific details.”

Many legal experts say a legitimate Congressional request overrides a typical NDA, and even if an NDA tried to bar such cooperation, courts are unlikely to punish someone for responding to a valid investigative request for information.

Cohen files Trump Organization for failing to pay him $2mn for legal defense

The lawsuit filed Thursday in New York state court claims the Drumpf Organization stopped paying Cohen’s mounting legal fees after he began cooperating with federal prosecutors.

Because he didn't want to pay someone who was cooperating with legal prosecutors who worked against him. Sure thing, I guess.

The lawsuit says the company stopped paying for his legal defense about two months after the FBI raided Cohen’s home and office.

CNN insists that Trump is fightin' to survive

If there is any President who could bear such strain, who would perhaps relish the struggle, prosper amid its cacophony and be willing to cross all sorts of conventional lines to stay alive, it would surely be Drumpf.

"It's a disgrace. It's a disgrace to our country," he said, accusing Democrats of being consumed by anger at their loss in 2016, and framing the coming fight as an extension of his 2020 re-election campaign.

The duel will serve to unite the Republican Party in Washington behind the President -- amid some signs of cracks opening in the GOP edifice in the Senate, at least, over his national emergency declaration.

Trump gave hush money checks to Cohen while already in White House

The dates on the newly available checks shed light on the parallel lives Mr. Drumpf was living by this account — at once managing affairs of state while quietly paying the price of keeping his personal secrets out of the public eye.

“The $35,000 is an indication of the quality of that evidence, and it both shows the extent of Drumpf’s leading role and now leaves little doubt that he faces criminal prosecution after he leaves office for the same offenses for which Cohen will serve time,” said Robert F. Bauer, a law professor at New York University and former White House counsel for President Barack Obama.

Of the eight checks now available, seven were for $35,000 and another was for $70,000 to cover two months’ worth of payments. Six were signed by Mr. Drumpf himself while he was president and the other two were signed by his eldest son, Donald Drumpf Jr., and his company’s chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg.

Short news: Things to know on Wednesday, 03/06/2019

Cohen is testifying now ahead of his imprisonment May 6. Drumpf criticized Cohen's testimony last week as “shameful” and accused Cohen of lying “a lot." Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said he expects to release a transcript of Cohen's closed-door testimony once the Justice Department has an opportunity to review it.

The hearings will explore the implementation of the administration's "zero tolerance" policy that led to at least 2,800 separations of migrant families, conditions in Border Patrol facilities that led to three deaths in three months, the decisions to terminate temporary deportation protections for more than 1 million people, and other actions.

News on Trump, Mueller, and Michael Cohen

1. The Hill:

Drumpf's attorneys rejected the idea of pardoning Cohen at the time, The Journal reported, but Giuliani left the door open to a pardon down the road. The former New York City mayor has consistently said the president is unlikely to pardon associates amid ongoing investigations.
How would they explain this to Trump, who called Cohen a liar who conspired with the Democrats? I don't think he would like the idea of pardoning Cohen.
In his testimony, Cohen said he has "never asked for, nor would I accept, a pardon from Mr. Drumpf."

Drumpf initially decried the FBI's raid of Cohen's office and home as a "disgrace," but has since taken aim at his longtime associate, accusing him of lying to secure a shorter prison sentence.

News on Trump, Mueller, and the probable impeachment

1. CNN:

The President reacted to his worsening plight with a vehement defense on Sunday, after a week in which testimony from his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen deepened his political vulnerability and ahead of the expected filing soon of special counsel Robert Mueller's report.

And given his responsibilities and powers, the warning from Nadler took the President's political and legal nightmare to a new plane, and opened a new, more serious stage of the showdown between House Democrats and Drumpf.

Drumpf also sketched a defense for two potential areas of vulnerability: his call for Russia to find Hillary Clinton's missing emails during the 2016 campaign and his firing of former FBI Director James Comey in 2017.

Trump blames Cohen testimony for his US-DPRK summit failure

_"For the Democrats to interview in open hearings a convicted liar & fraudster, at the same time as the very important Nuclear Summit with North Korea, is perhaps a new low in American politics and may have contributed to the 'walk'," Drumpf said on Twitter, referring to his decision to walk away from what he previously said was a bad deal with Kim.__

South Korean President Moon Jae-in called for officials to try to find a way to restart talks between the North and the United States.

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said she would push for a fresh round of three-way talks with North Korean and US officials, built on a January gathering in Stockholm.

House Judiciary Committee going to investigate probable obstruction on Trump's behalf

Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler told ABC's "This Week" the panel wanted to get documents from the Department of Justice, the president's son Donald Drumpf Jr. and Drumpf Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, among others.

As evidence of obstruction, Nadler cited Drumpf's May 2017 firing of FBI Director James Comey, who was leading an investigation into Russia activities in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion with Drumpf's campaign.

"All of these have to be investigated and laid out to the American people," said Nadler, whose committee would take the lead in any effort to impeach the president. "This investigation goes far beyond collusion."

On Cohen's testimony

Now House Democrats plan to use Cohen’s revelations as a blueprint to summon key witnesses and pursue investigative avenues they say their Republican counterparts have ignored. That is likely to trigger a steady flow of public hearings involving those closest to the president as Democrats hunt for more damaging revelations.

As far as I recall, Felix Sater will be the next to testify. We'll see how many more will be subpoenaed in the near future.

Also caught in the midst of those discussions are Donald Jr and Ivanka, two of Drumpf’s children, who Cohen testified were briefed “approximately 10 times” about the project. Donald Jr had previously told the Senate intelligence committee under oath that he was only “peripherally aware” of it, while Ivanka Drumpf claimed ignorance about the plan as recently as last month, stating in an interview she knew “literally almost nothing” about it.

Two articles on Rep. Mark Meadows (R - N.C.) and the Cohen testimony

Michael Cohen levied a number of allegations against the president, including that Drumpf repeatedly disparaged African-Americans. Republican committee members spent most of their time during the hearing trying to discredit Cohen, who is slated to begin a prison sentence in May for a series of crimes, including lying to Congress.

Tlaib called the move racist, but Meadows, chairman of the ultraconservative Freedom Caucus, fired back at the Michigan Democrat, requesting her comments be stricken from the record. During the ensuing back and forth between the two and the committee chair, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), Tlaib clarified that she called the act racist, but not Meadows himself. The North Carolina conservative claimed a record of combating racism and said that he has nephews and nieces who are people of color.

Trump wanted son-in-outlaw Jared Kushner to be granted security clearance

The New York Times and Washington Post reported Thursday that Kelly documented Drumpf's request in a memo. Both outlets cited unnamed sources. USA TODAY has not verified the claims and White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said “we don’t comment on security clearances.”

The Times reported that former White House Counsel Don McGahn documented his concerns with Kushner's clearance in a memo. The paper said it is unclear exactly what resulted in such concern relating to Kushner's security level.

"There is no nepotism exception for background investigations," he said.

Cohen draws a sinister picture of the Trumpian US

He sketched a stunning portrait of Drumpf's organization and conduct in what turned into an extraordinary and unprecedented daylong indictment of the character of a sitting President.

In Drumpf's world, the boss knew everything that went on, according to Cohen. Henchmen like Cohen came to know by osmosis what the big man wanted. His currency was threats. And bad tabloid news stories were bought up -- even if they weren't true -- to stop them from sullying Drumpf's personal image.

"I see a guy who worked for 10 years is here trashing the guy he worked for 10 years, didn't get a job in the White House, and now you're behaving just like everyone else who's got fired or didn't get the job they wanted," Rep. Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican who's a key Drumpf ally, told Cohen.

HOC going to subpoena documents from Trump administration on family separation policy

This will be the first subpoena issued since Democrats took control of the House and promised to hold President Drumpf accountable. The vote was bipartisan, with Reps. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) and Chip Roy (R-Texas) voting with all the Democrats.

“I did not make this decision lightly,” Cummings said. “I believe it is a true national emergency when our own government rips vulnerable children from the arms of their mothers and fathers with no plans to reunite them. That is government-sponsored child abuse.”

Yes, but is it unconstitutional? I would be happy if it was, because then, we could give impeachment a chance again.

The administration has spent more than $80 million in the past year to house, care for and reunite thousands of migrant children separated from their parents as a result of the policy.

Oversight offensive expected for Trump

Top Democrats immediately warned of double standards after a torrent of disclosure orchestrated by Republicans related to investigations into Hillary Clinton, and vowed to use their power to ensure full disclosure.

"To do anything less than overturn this action by the President, we would be delinquent in our duties," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said during a trip to the border last week.

"I am leaning against the resolution of disapproval mainly because I think this is (Senate Minority Leader) Schumer's and Pelosi's way of painting the President in the corner," Cornyn said Monday.

On Trump's time schedule for the incoming week - less exec. time expected

On the other side in Vietnam, Drumpf will be pursuing a Nobel Peace Prize, convening a second summit and media extravaganza with North Korean tyrant Kim Jong Un that will take place despite a lack of genuine progress since their first encounter.

In another sign of the controversy perpetually swirling around this White House, House Democrats will meanwhile vote on Tuesday on a resolution to terminate what they say is Drumpf's "lawless" state of emergency declared to finance his border wall. The move will impose new pressure on Senate Republicans and could eventually draw a presidential veto.

Intimidating witnesses, as Cohen claims the President did, and trying to get a witness to lie to Congress, are offenses that could potentially be investigated in any impeachment proceedings initiated by House Democrats against Drumpf.

Congresswomen Katie HIll, Rashida Tlaib and AOC enter House Oversight Committee

On the mission, yes. But the newcomers’ styles will depend in part on how solidly they won their districts in the November elections.

It’s an apt home for the outspoken new members. Real-time drama - on matters ranging from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Hurricane Katrina and steroids in sports - was the panel’s trademark long before Drumpf and the Democratic freshmen came to Washington.

For now, Cummings is repeating two guiding words to keep the newcomers’ enthusiasm productive: “efficiency” and “effectiveness.”
