Origin of apparent light-enhanced and negative capacitance in perovskite solar ....So-called negative capacitance seems to remain an obscure feature in the analysis of the frequency-dependent impedance of perovskite solar cells. It belongs to one of the puzzling peculiarities arising from the mixed ionic-electronic conductivity of this class of semiconductor. Here we show that apparently high capacitances in general (positive and negative) are not related to any capacitive feature in the sense of a corresponding charge accumulation. Instead, they are a natural consequence of slow transients mainly in forward current of the diode upon ion displacement when changing voltage.

Physicists proposed fast method for printing nanolasers from rerovskites....An international research team has developed a new method of synthesizing miniature light sources. It is based on a special laser which produces millions of nanolasers from a perovskite film in a few minutes. Such lasers look like small disks, work at room temperature and have an tunable emission wavelength from 550 to 800 nm. The high speed and good reproducibility of this method make it promising for the industrial production of single nanolasers as well as whole chains. The study was published in ACS Nano.

Colloidal quantum dot (CQD) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) deliver a compelling performance in the visible, yet infrared CQD LEDs underperform their visible-emitting counterparts, largely due to their low photoluminescence quantum efficiency. Here we employ a ternary blend of CQD thin film that comprises a binary host matrix that serves to electronically passivate as well as to cater for an efficient and balanced carrier supply to the emitting quantum dot species. In doing so, we report infrared PbS CQD LEDs with an external quantum efficiency of ~7.9% and a power conversion efficiency of ~9.3%, thanks to their very low density of trap states, on the order of 1014 cm−3, and very high photoluminescence quantum efficiency in electrically conductive quantum dot solids of more than 60%. A new study on pollution reveals that proof isn’t in the pudding — it’s in the honey. Research carried out in partnership between the nonprofit Hives for Humanity and the University of British Columbia showed that honey collected from urban beehives can accurately measure how polluted a city is. This means that honey isn’t just a byproduct of bee regurgitation — it’s also a way to closely monitor changes in the environment.

Writing in Nature Sustainability, the study’s authors explain that this study is the first of its kind in North America. They specifically analyzed honey collected from beehives in six Metro Vancouver neighborhoods — testing for levels of lead, zinc, copper, and other elements. Fluoride Overfeed Incident Needs Health Investigation....
In response to a fluoride overfeed in Sandy City, Utah, where drinking water fluoride reached levels that caused nausea, vomiting and other fluoride poisoning symptoms in residents, the Fluoride Action Network (FAN) has sent a letter to the mayor and other public officials asking for a detailed health investigation. The fluoride incident on February 5-7 reportedly caused levels at homes to reach over 100 mg/L, a level close to what caused a fatality and serious illnesses in a previous overfeed accident in Alaska. A level of 100 mg/L is 25 times greater than the EPA standard and 150 times greater than the normal level for water fluoridation.

Lise Meitner – the forgotten woman of nuclear physics who deserved a Nobel Prize....For many years, physicists believed it energetically impossible for atoms as large as uranium (atomic mass = 235 or 238) to be split into two.
That all changed on Feb. 11,1939, with a letter to the editor of Nature – a premier international scientific journal – that described exactly how such a thing could occur and even named it fission. In that letter, physicist Lise Meitner, with the assistance of her young nephew Otto Frisch, provided a physical explanation of how nuclear fission could happen.
It was a massive leap forward in nuclear physics, but today Lise Meitner remains obscure and largely forgotten. She was excluded from the victory celebration because she was a Jewish woman. Her story is a sad one.

New approach improving stability and optical properties of perovskite films....Metal halide perovskites are regarded as next generation materials for light emitting devices (LEDs).A recent joint-research co-led by the scientist from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has developed a new and efficient fabrication approach to produce all-inorganic perovskite films with better optical properties and stability,enabling the development of high colour-purity and low-cost perovskite LEDs with a high operational lifetime.

Researchers use snail teeth to improve solar cells and batteries.... An assistant professor at the University of California, Riverside's Bourns College of Engineering is using the teeth of a marine snail found off the coast of California to create less costly and more efficient nanoscale materials to improve solar cells and lithium-ion batteries.
The paper is focused on the gumboot chiton,the largest type of chiton,which can be up to a foot-long.

Low Temperature Solution-Processable 3D-Patterned Charge Recombination Layer for Organic Tandem Solar Cells....We propose a novel method to pattern the charge recombination layer (CRL) with a low-temperature solution-processable ZnO layer (under 150 °C) for organic solar cell applications.Due to the optimal drying process and thermal annealing condition,ZnO sol-gel particles formed a three-Dimensional (3D) structure without using a high temperature or ramping method.The generated 3D nano-ripple pattern showed a height of around 120 nm,and a valley-to-valley distance of about 500 nm. Based on this newly developed ZnO nano-ripple patterning technique, it was possible to pattern the CRL without damaging the underneath layers in tandem structure. The use of nano-ripple patterned ZnO as the part of CRL, led to the concomitant improvement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of about 30%, compared with non-patterned CRL device.... show more

**Anticorrosion Behavior of Zeolite Coatings Obtained by In Situ Crystallization: A Critical Review
Zeolites are crystalline nanoporous aluminosilicates. Thanks to their intrinsically nanoporous structure they are widely used as molecular sieves, for exchanging ions, or, also thanks to the high surface area of these structures, for catalytic applications. Furthermore, thanks to their thermal and chemical stability, in recent years zeolite coatings have been evaluated for application as anti-corrosion coatings. The non-toxicity of this class of coatings makes it possible that they will be an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional chromate-based coatings. This article provides a brief review of the anti-corrosion performance of zeolite coatings, applied by direct synthesis technique to several metals and alloys, as discussed in the literature. **
