Columbia University professor compares Israel to ISIS

The “murderous thugs” of the jihadist group “conquered parts of Syria and declared a ‘caliphate,’” Dabashi wrote. “Their ISRAELI counterparts meanwhile conquered parts of Syria and declared it part of their Zionist settler colony.”
He added: “The only difference: ISIS does not have a platoon of clean shaven and well coiffured [sic]columnists at the New York Times propagating the cause of the terrorist outfit as the Zionists columnists do on a regular basis.”

The university chapter of Students Supporting Israel wrote in a statement Thursday: “This kind of utterly despicable and repugnant statement is not to be expected from a tenured faculty holder in an Ivy League institution.” Fox News and other media reported that the university did not immediately reply to queries on Dabashi.

South Africa downgrades embassy to Israel, subsequent to op-ed by former ANC minister Ronnie Kasriels

First, the op-ed, published by The Guardian:

Israel’s repression of Palestinian citizens, African refugees and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza has become more brutal over time. Ethnic cleansing, land seizure, home demolition, military occupation, bombing of Gaza and international law violations led Archbishop Tutu to declare that the treatment of Palestinians reminded him of apartheid, only worse.

Last week, a public meeting in Vienna where I was scheduled to speak in support of Palestinian freedom, as part of the global Israeli Apartheid Week, was cancelled by the museum hosting the event – under pressure from Vienna’s city council, which opposes the international movement to divest from Israel.
The question is what their reasoning was, why... show more

On the AIPAC and Netanyahu

1. Haaretz:

Netanyahu, for one, certainly doesn’t need another AIPAC speech: He’s been making them for 35 years, since he became Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations. But the lobby’s annual jamboree was a convenient pretext for him to fly to Washington and get the endorsement from Drumpf that he believes will help him in the election.

He called AIPAC a “great organization” and took a few digs (without specifically naming her) at freshman Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who has been at the center of controversy for attacking AIPAC using barely veiled anti-Semitic tropes. But you could see his heart wasn’t in it.

_ To remain viable over the coming years, AIPAC will need to retain the support it still has on the Democratic side and fight to regain that which it has lost from the party’s more progressive wing. A Drumpf-emb

«Apply this country's virtues equally upon every nation in this world», by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN)

I fled my home country of Somalia when I was 8 years old from a conflict that the United States later engaged in. I spent the next four years in a refugee camp in Kenya, where I experienced and witnessed unspeakable suffering from those who, like me, had lost everything because of war.

At a time when we spend more on our military than the next seven countries combined, our global armed presence is often the most immediate contact people in the developing world have with the United States. National security experts across the political spectrum agree that we don’t need nearly 800 military bases outside the United States to keep our country safe.

It must be hard for a true US-American to be citizen to a country that is more interested in either destroying or intervening in a country militarily, than taking care of its people's education. What kind of country is this? I don't know, and I guess that there is no Republican... show more

#Quotes on #Jews by #Immanuel Kant

“The euthanasia of Judaism is the pure moral religion.”

“Every coward is a liar; Jews for example, not only in business, but also in common life.”

“The Jews still cannot claim any true genius, any truly great man. All their talents and skills revolve around stratagems and low cunning…They are a nation of swindlers.”

The Jews are by nature “sharp dealers” who are “bound together by superstition.” Their “immoral and vile” behavior in commerce shows that they “do not aspire to civic virtue,” for “the spirit of usury holds sway amongst them.

Donald Trump Jr. defends Chelsea Clinton in standoff with NYU student on islamophobic comments

“I’m so sorry,” she said. “Certainly it was never my intention. I do believe words matter.”
Still, the student persisted in dressing down Clinton, claiming the shootings were “stoked by people like you.”

While it’s unclear which statements the student was referring, the exchange subsequently prompted a series of reactions on Twitter, including one from Drumpf Jr. who called it “sickening.”

Instead, he contended that he didn’t see white nationalism as much of an issue, speculating that the issue lies within “a small group of people that have very, very serious problems, I guess.”

Trump welcomes Jexodus, encourages Democratic Jews to turn Republican

Drumpf has asserted that though Jewish Americans tended to be reliable Democratic voters, the party’s lurch to the left in recent years, as evidenced by its splintering over Omar’s comments, has alienated Jewish voters.

A website for Jexodus only lists a spokesperson, model and former Drumpf campaign staffer Elizabeth Pipko, and no other staff. A description on the website says that Jewish millennials are "tired of living in bondage to leftist politics" and accuses Democrats of taking the Jewish vote for granted.

The president, who himself has been accused of promoting anti-Semitic stereotypes and not thoroughly denouncing hate speech, has positioned himself as a champion of Israel throughout his presidency.

The comeback of Whtie House Press Briefings

But Sanders was more than happy to use reporters' questions to spread the latest toxin injected into Washington's political bloodstream by the President -- the ideas that Democrats want to kill babies and they hate Jews.

"When the President's ready to make an announcement on that front, he certainly will," said Sanders, who was preceded at the podium by Acting Budget Director Russell Vought.

Sanders is far from the first White House press secretary to take political swipes from the podium -- Ari Fleischer and Robert Gibbs in recent years were particularly astute partisan tacticians for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, respectively.

On the people in Minnesota's 5th district, which elected Ilhan Omar

"Anti-Semitism is real in this country," Mohamed Omar, who is not related to the freshman Democrat, said in an interview in a private study, as children nearby hurried to Friday afternoon prayers. But the controversy, he said, is a "distraction."

Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman of Temple Israel, a Reform Jewish congregation that is the oldest synagogue in this city, said many of members of her community have called her over the last month to say they were troubled by Omar's comments.

But, the rabbi added, "in my mind, tweets are not the way that you communicate complex, complicated issues when you are a member of Congress."

This is a sentence that is able to refer to so many topics that nowadays are conversed and discussed via Twitter. 280 letters per message are simply not how you lead a decent conversation on a complex topic.

US Democrats fail to cope with the Ilhan Omar case

McCain, a co-host of "The View," ripped Omar for sending out the message, calling it “trash” and “beneath a sitting member of Congress.”

“Rashida, Ilhan, and Alexandria have at times dared to question our foreign policy, and the influence of money in our political system. And now, lobbying groups across the board are working to punish them for it,” Ocasio-Cortez’s team wrote in a fundraising email that also referenced freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who, along with Omar, is one of the first Muslim women to serve in Congress.

“On one end, we know that there are members who are going to be free. They're going to candid. They're going to be fearless in their approach to getting their message out,” he said. “There are other folks who are going to be more measured and pragmatic, and I don't think we're in a place to condemn one methodology over the other.”

Antisemitic attacks increase within gilet jaunes movement

Studies have shown anti-Semitism is rising sharply across Europe but this violent resurgence in France has triggered some deep soul-searching with many asking: what's behind it? Why now? Some have questioned the Yellow Vest movement and whether its radical fringe is partly to blame for the sudden uptick.

The Yellow Vests are not an anti-Semitic movement per se but in a climate where every voice is considered legitimate, anti-Jewish sentiment has found a prominent platform. Thierry-Paul Valette, a spokesman for the Yellow Vests, rejects the accusation that the movement has empowered hate speech. "We didn't fuel anti-Semitism or hate, we simply put a mirror up to society," Valette says.

There's no doubt that the far-left and right have been a part of the Yellow Vest movement. Pictures and videos of demonstrators performing the "quenelle," a downward pointing gesture believed by some to be a Nazi salute in reverse, have emerged online.

Stepsister to Anne Frank confronts New Habor high school students over Nazi swastika party

“I was their age when I realized my life was completely shattered and I would never have a family again,” she said.

Schloss was already scheduled to visit Orange County for a book talk Wednesday night at Chapman University in Orange. Rabbi Reuven Mintz of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life in Newport Beach invited her to join him in speaking at Newport Harbor High to put a face on the pain inflicted by Nazi Germany on millions of Jews and others.

“This causes a lot of difficulties,” she said. “It’s perhaps understandable why they support the Palestinian people’s cause.”

On Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN) and the Republicans

Where a few weeks ago, cable television networks cut to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s live commentary about Drumpf and Russia, this week they carried her uncomfortable words about seething fellow Democrats.

As Pelosi and Democratic leadership have come under pressure to rebuke Omar, for example, three of the party’s presidential candidates — Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) — pushed back. The result was a watered-down resolution introduced on Thursday that did not single out Omar by name and condemned both “anti-Semitism” and “anti-Muslim discrimination.”

White House aides are in the midst of a pressure campaign pushing GOP lawmakers not to support a resolution set to rebuke the president for invoking his national emergency powers to build his border wall. Next week, Drumpf is likely to quash the measure with the first veto of his presidency.

On the Ilhan Omar case and Israel support in Congress

1. CNN:

The resolution came after Omar criticized politicians by using anti-Semitic tropes, prompting condemnation from several Jewish Democratic lawmakers and an apology from Omar last month.

-What about bigotry from Republicans, including President Donald Drumpf? And why were Democrats so focused on a woman of color, one of just two Muslims in Congress? Could the added scrutiny even put Omar in danger?_

"This is not a productive use of our time," a senior aide to a moderate House Democrat told CNN. "We need to change the subject and get back to the things we promised to do, which is infrastructure, health care, jobs."

«Against anti-Semitism in the US», by Lee Zeldin (R - N.Y.) & Ted Budd (R - N. C.)

It is OK to have reasonable, legitimate criticism of any government in the world, including the U.S. government and those of our allies, but when it is in the name of that criticism that deep and dark hate towards other people costs innocent people their lives and freedom from discrimination, than silence is especially never an option.

In January, a resolution was passed in the House or Representatives rejecting white supremacy, naming a GOP colleague. The very next day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-N.Y.) placed the resolution on the docket and, on Jan. 15, the entire House of Representatives rushed to the House floor to almost unanimously (424-1) vote in favor of this resolution, including us.

It is time to speak up. It is time to renounce blatant hatred and bigotry in all forms from white supremacy to anti-Semitism. It is time to send a clear, resounding message to the entire world that anti-Semitic and anti-Israel hate will not be tole... show more

France declares anti-Zionism as form of anti-Semitism

French president, Emmanuel Macron, also promised new legislation in May to fight hate speech on the Internet, which could see platforms such as Facebook and Twitter fined for every minute they fail to take down racist or violent content.

Digital minister Mounir Mahjoubi said: “There will be an obligation for results: if the content is not taken down then there will be a fine, and a large fine,” Mr Mahjoubi told France Info radio. “Each minute that content remains online, it increases the harm to society. Twenty-four hours is far too long.”

Senate likely to block Yemen bill

“It’s no surprise that the Republican leadership in the Senate would try to use any means to thwart the will of the Congress and thwart the will of the people. It’s just disgraceful,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) said in an interview. “I’ve been around this place for 30 years. When there’s a will, there’s a way. If you want to pass something, you do it. And if you don’t want to do it, you find every excuse under the sun to say why you can’t do it.”

But House Republicans will likely try again to add language condemning anti-Semitism, a move that would put Democrats in an uncomfortable political position to vote “no” on the amendment in order to ensure that the War Powers resolution advances to Drumpf’s desk. If that amendment passes, the measure would face the same obstacle from the Senate parliamentarian.

Anti-Semitic crimes increase in France

Anti-Semitic acts surged by 74 percent last year, from 311 in 2017 to 541 in 2018, French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said Monday.

In two separate incidents in the past two days, swastikas were drawn on Paris postboxes containing portraits of late Holocaust survivor Simone Veil and the word Juden (German for Jews) was sprayed on the window of a bagel bakery in the capital.

In November, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe warned that France, whose pro-Nazi regime deported Jews during World War II, was “very far from being finished with anti-Semitism”.

This is annoying - I read her comments and they didn't seem anti-Semitic. They seemed simply critical of Israel's foreign policy and lobbying efforts in the United States.

Perfectly valid. Once you apologize for something you didn't do, it subtly weakens your moral authority in the minds of many people that support you.

In my ethical framework, fake apologies are nearly always wrong, both morally, strategically and in terms of efficacy.

One has a moral duty to themselves to be as effective in their own endeavors as possible. Fake apologies ring inauthentic.

Unless lives are at stake, stay away from fake apologies.

Any Democrats urging her to apologize are working against their own inZterests. Shit like this adds up to losses for the Democrats.

At least in my less than expert opinion. Obviously, I'm not a paid political consultant (they gets paid no matter who wins or loses,) I'm just a student of human communication, personal ethics and my own feelings about things. A random dude on the Internet running my mouth.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN) accuses Jewish groups of financing pro-Israel bill

Omar's comments touched upon a long-running, and particularly ugly, thread of the anti-Semitic movement — that Jewish money fuels backing for Israel in the United States and elsewhere. A freshman Democrat, Max Rose of New York, said, "Congresswoman Omar's statements are deeply hurtful to Jews, including myself."

This doesn't answer the question, though. She wanted to know whether Jewish groups fueled campaign donations that now led to this bill which she rejected on her behalf.

And the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee is a non-profit that doesn't donate directly to candidates.

Hm...

"Equating [Omar and Tlaib's] criticism of Israel to Steve King's long defense of white supremacy is obscene (McCarthy said it's worse). In the US, we're allowed to criticize our own government: certainly foreign governments. The GOP House Leader's priorities are warped."

Congressman Lee Zedlin (R - N.Y.) continously insulted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D - MN)

It started on Tuesday, when he found out he had been chosen as the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. Exciting! How can Trump and AfD be so successful at elections?

Quite simply: adding to decades full of deliberate exploitation, miss-management and corruption scandals (feeling of constantly being cheated on) – it is the feeling of people that politicians have delivered them to “out of control” globalization and people want back control (over their country).

In the uncontrolled migration / refugee wave, the loss of control across the EU became apparent.

Protests and violence amid Holocaust Remembrance Day

In #Poland, which was under Nazi German occupation during the war, a far-right activist who has been imprisoned for burning the effigy of a Jew gathered with other nationalists Sunday outside the former death camp of Auschwitz ahead of official ceremonies remembering the 1.1 million people murdered there.

That accusation is incorrect. The observances at the state-run memorial site pay homage each Jan. 27 to all of the camp’s victims, both Jews and gentiles.

In Britain, a new poll by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust found that one in 20 adults in Britain do not believe the Holocaust took place.
