Schools put on lockout due to «credible threat»

Columbine High School, more than 20 other schools in Jefferson County and one school in Denver have been placed on lockout Tuesday afternoon after sheriff’s officials said they were investigating “what appears to be a credible threat possibly involving the schools.”

All Jeffco schools will release students on schedule with increased security staff on site, the district said in a tweet. All after-school activities will go on as scheduled, except for at Columbine High School, where all after-school activities have been canceled.
What it doesn't say, though, is what has caused the lockout, what they call the credible threat. Was there a letter sent to the sheriff, or any suspicious activity next to these schools? Some mysterious calls with a distorted voice, alarming the school directors? I don't know, and it doesn't say anything about it in the article.

«Muh 2nd Amendment» turds relate gun control to Holocaust, falsely

The viral image shows the shoes on the Capitol lawn along with the words, "shoes left by supporters of gun control, 2018." Below that is a photo of a pile of thousands of shoes belonging to concentration camp victims, with a caption beside it that says "shoes left by victims of gun control, Germany 1945."

Let's make something clear: The Nazis did deny guns specifically to Jews. But, given the size of their forces and their methods of confiscation and extermination, this is a trivial factor. The notion that it would have made any difference is unreasonable.

But Dagmar Ellerbrock, an expert on German gun policies at the Dresden Technical University in Germany, told PolitiFact in 2015 that the order was followed "quite rarely, so that largely, only newly bought weapons became registered. At that time, most men, and many women, still owned the weapons they acquired before or during the first World War."

"Just imagine the Jews of Germany ex

Pittsburgh passes bill to ban assault-style rifles after synagogue shooting

“There was a lot of opposition,” Mayor Peduto said. “But more people in the community quietly showed their support.”
This is the most critical reference to the silent majority I have ever seen, it's also the most assailable I have ever seen. I hope he knows what he is doing and what kind of backlash he is soon going to experience. As much as I approve of his decision, he should take care of himself too.
The opposition is against restricting military-assault weapons, banning most uses of high-capacity magazines and allowing the temporary seizure of guns from people who are determined to be a danger to themselves or others.

The legislation was introduced last year after the mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill. Eleven people were killed when a gunman opened fire during services, and seven others were wounded.

Pittsburgh City Council approves of stricter gun control measures after shooting at Tree Of Life Synagogue

The legislation will place restrictions on military-style assault weapons like the AR-15 rifle that authorities say was used in the Oct. 27 rampage at Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill, which killed 11 people and wounded seven.

It also bans most uses of armor-piercing ammunition and high-capacity magazines, and allows the temporary seizure of guns from people who are determined to be a danger to themselves or others.

However, Second Amendment activists have made it known that they will challenge the legislation in court, pointing out that state law doesn’t allow municipalities to regulate firearms. The legislation was watered down last week in an effort to make it more likely to survive a court challenge.

19-year old dies for having knocked at the wrong door while being black

"He pleaded for his life. He was like, 'Hold on, I am sorry, I am sorry' and the dude shot him," a witness said.

"He has five kids, he was literally protecting his family. His truck was stolen earlier this week. Right now, that's all they're trying to do is protect their family," Makayla Johnson said.
You don't protect your family when you behave like a mad paranoid and shoot down innocents. He was not involved in his truck theft, he didn't do anything to him. He even cried that he was sorry, there was no need to shoot him down. But as it seems, gunning down others when feeling offended must be a usual action in the US, land of the free and of a party that thinks that more guns will create more safety. This is some fucked-up shit.

New Zealand buyback of guns could cost millions

"It's better to prepare for the worst and think of the upper limit. It could cost – and this is an extravagant statement but it may well be true – it could cost up to $300 million to set what is wrong, right."
Damn, this is a costy occupation, I must admit. We'd better outsource it on the vendors, to save some of the tax money. 😉
He said the Port Arthur massacre in Australia in 1996 "should have been a signal to us. We didn't act then, either".

At the moment, it is unknown how many firearms there are in New Zealand but the number is estimated to range between 1.2 million and 1.5 million.

Senate discusses stricter gun control in red flag cases

Red flag laws—also called extreme risk protection orders—allow law enforcement or civilians to petition a judge to have firearms removed from the possession of someone who they believe is at risk of harming themselves or others. The individual has the opportunity to protest the order. If it’s enacted, however, they may not purchase or posses a firearm for a minimum of 180 days.

Those in favor of red flag laws state the regulation can prevent violence, particularly suicides. Those in opposition argue that unless the law addresses the value of the second amendment and provides for due process, it can be used to disarm innocent people.
You're no longer innocent when you possess a gun you are able to use. From this moment on, you are suspicious.

Father to girl shot in Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting committed suicide

A neuropharmacologist, Richman co-founded the Avielle Foundation after his first-grade daughter, Avielle Richman, died in the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The 6-year-old was among the 20 first-grade students and six administrators killed.

“The death appears to be a suicide but police will not disclose the method or any other details of the death, only to state the death does not appear suspicious.”

In a 2017 interview with NPR, Richman talked about the emptiness the couple felt after they lost their only child. “It was like a ghost limb syndrome, you know, where you keep thinking ‘Where’s Avielle? Do we need to pick her up?’” he said. “And every day you’d have this [realization]that I don’t have a child, and I don’t have to parent. That was just brutal.”

Political Adviser to One Nation party James Ashby exposed to have received 20 mn Dollars from NRA to lower AUS gun laws

Before the Al Jazeera documentary was published, Mr Ashby was best known for the “Ashbygate” political scandal involving federal parliament’s former speaker of the house, Peter Slipper.

“To allow these proceedings to remain in the court would bring the administration of justice into disrepute among right-thinking people and would be manifestly unfair to Mr Slipper,” Justice Rares said in his judgment.

Last month, Mr Ashby was involved in a physical altercation with United Australia Party Brian Burston, after Mr Burston made a sexual harassment claim against Pauline Hanson.

Ban on military rifles executed in New Zealand, subsequent to Christchurch mosque shooting

Jacinda Ardern said the ban goes into effect immediately and would be followed by legislation next month. New Zealand's citizens should make arrangements to turn in weapons banned under the new laws, Ardern told the nation in a live television announcement.

She said an amnesty will be put in place for weapons to be handed in by citizens. The New Zealand cabinet will also implement a buyback plan for banned weapons, and there will be "tightly regulated" exemptions for some owners such as hunters and farmers.

About 1.5 million firearms are owned – legally and illegally – by civilians in New Zealand, according to police data tracked by GunPolicy.org, a website run in conjunction with the University of Sydney. This equates to about 30 firearms per 100 people. In the United States, the rate is approximately 120 firearms per 100 people, according to the site.

On the Christchurch shooting and its causes

The shooter says he carried out the attack for “my people,” because he believes that Muslim migration to European countries constitutes an “invasion” for which he wished to exact revenge. But he also included a number of ironic tropes intended to signal to his in-group and obscure what he was thinking to the out-group, only widening the cultural gulf between the two.

_The gleeful cruelty of the alt-right’s shposting in 2016, for instance, fooled mainstream journalists who couldn’t imagine people being glib about death threats or ethnostate advocacy. Their defensive and outraged reactions to something ostensibly ironic fueled the thing they were trying to stamp out. Shposting is ironic, vacuous. But it can also conceal something darker, as the apparent shooter’s 8chan post reveals: “Well lads, it’s time to stop sh**posting and time to make a real life effort post.”_

Lawsuit by bereaved victims of Sandy Hook shooting allowed to proceed

The court's narrow decision, overturning a lower court judge, rules that Remington can be sued over its marketing practices under a Connecticut state law, despite protections offered to gun manufacturers by federal law. The ruling sends the case back to the lower court.

"What I'm looking to find out in this whole process, essentially, is what went on inside Remington," said Bill Sherlach, whose wife Mary was the school psychologist shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary. "Let's see the internal documents, the internal emails, as to what the charges were to their marketing and ad execs."

Lawyers for the gunmaker argued that there was no way for Remington to assess the shooter, and therefore no way they could have known what the gun would be used for.

Bill introduced by Florida senator Pizzo would make it illegal for minors to post pictures of guns in social networks

(The first question to ask when reading this is: Why should minors actually dedicate to guns, for God's sake? This is seriously concerning, children should not be dedicated to murdering one another and the means to do so, but on the other hand, it shows how seriously deranged the Republican party and its disciples are. Nevertheless, read it yourself.)
This is an obvious First Amendment violation: The statute isn't limited to displays that constitute true threats of violence (there's a First Amendment exception for such true threats), or possession of guns by minors in violation of state law. Indeed, it would be a crime for a minor to post a photo of himself lawfully using a gun at a shooting range.

So would a minor's posting "a picture of a firearm" (not even a photograph of himself holding a firearm) as part of a pro-gun-rights -- or anti-gun-rights -- political post. So, for that matter, would be a minor's posting a photo of soldie... show more

Bleeding heart Trump ally ditched from Fox News

Two knowledgeable sources confirmed that Clarke is also no longer a senior adviser and spokesman for pro-Drumpf super PAC America First Action, where he landed in late 2017 after he resigned as sheriff and was repeatedly blocked from getting a position in the Drumpf administration. (For instance, Drumpf’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon wanted to hire Clarke as a White House official, primarily to make TV appearances and take on members of the media.)

Several months later, he lashed out at Fox News for having “crawled into bed with CNN” by backing the rival network’s lawsuit against the Drumpf administration for stripping CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s White House access. He then declared that insurgent right-wing cable network One America News—which sided with Drumpf—has “some balls,” by comparison.

Another rabbit hole that I've been following for a few years now.

This shows school shootings per 1,000,000 (US Population statistics, not students/staff, but total US population), summarized at the decade level.
  • Gray line is number of shooting incidents per 1m people.
  • Red line is deaths per 1m people in those incidents.
  • Blue line is injuries per 1m people in those incidents.
As you can see from the chart, even correcting for population growth, school shootings are a problem that is getting worse, not better.

In the years I could find data (about 1840 to now)...
Most incidents in one year was 42 shootings in 2014.
Most wounded in one year was 81 in 1986.
Most deaths in one year was a tie, 44 in 1927 and 2007.

The single deadliest school shooting on record was in Bath Township, Michigan in 1927. 44 people died that day, and 58 were wounde... show more

People of KY soon to be able to carry concealed weapons without permit

Senate Bill 150 swiftly passed in the state Senate recently, putting the Kentucky chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a nationwide organization focused on preventing gun violence, on high alert.

Kentucky requires people to get a permit before they can carry a concealed firearm in the commonwealth. To do that, they have to undergo a background check, complete some gun safety training and pay a $60 fee.

Economist and gun rights advocate John Lott Jr. said his research has shown that poor individuals benefit greatly from having the option to carry a gun with them. Concerning the importance of being able to protect oneself, he noted that law enforcement is vital but usually arrives after crimes already have been committed.

NRA defaming Democratic president candidates and victims of gun violence alike

Standing behind Pelosi in the photo is Rep. Lucy McBath, whose 17-year-old son, Jordan, was gunned down at a Jacksonville gas station when 45-year-old Michael David Dunn pulled up next to the car Jordan was in with his friends and fired on the teens because he felt their music was too loud; and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head in 2011 during an assassination attempt by Jared Lee Loughner, whose murder spree that day killed six and wounded 18 others.

The FBI affidavit listed the guns and accessories Hasson has purchased over the last two years to carry out the planned attack, and specifically noted the purchases Hasson made directly from the NRA Range gun store, inside the headquarters of the NRA.

Democratic president candidate Amy Klobuchar and gun laws

She says banning assault weapons wouldn't hurt her Uncle Dick in the deer stand, nor would background checks.

Unless uncle dick is a deranged psychopath who perforates deers with an M-16. Then, it might hurt him a little bit. But not as much as shotgun shells hurt the customs enforcement who try to take away his rifle.

The Democratic presidential hopeful spoke Monday night at a CNN town hall in New Hampshire. She says her state still hasn't gotten over the 2016 death of Prince, one of Minnesota's most famous residents. He died of an accidental fentanyl overdose.

The man who survived being perforated

He says that they asked for identification, so he reached for his wallet. That’s when they started shooting.

That's how everyone recalls the most common attitudes of American cops.

He relearned how to walk. He couldn’t return to his job as a refrigeration mechanic, because he lost coordination in one of his hands; however, a $5.5 million settlement with the sheriff’s office and the corrections department staved off financial concerns.

Before the incident, Theoharis was addicted to opioids, which are involved in the majority of drug-overdose deaths in America. He began treatment after he was released from the hospital and had the time to attend several 12-step meetings a day. “I just wanted to live a happy frickin’ life,” he said. “I get another chance.”

Cop's service weapon stolen by stripper

The unnamed officer’s .40-caliber Glock 22 service weapon was taken while he was with the women when they stopped at a hotel bar and later a strip club before ending the night at a hotel in Pawtucket, R.I., reports state.

The officer told police he had locked his service weapon in his BMW 328i and asked one of the suspects to grab his charger out of his car while all three were at a Pawtucket hotel after the night out, the Journal reported, citing a police report.

The wild night began, the Journal added, when the unidentified Boston cop connected with one of the women via Instagram, a popular social media site. Pawtucket police declined to comment further Thursday night. The officer’s identity was redacted from the police report, the Journal reported.

Supreme Court might head towards extending 2nd amendment

Yet from such outliers are major Supreme Court decisions of national import often born. And here, the court's conservative justices could clarify that all gun restrictions must clear a high bar, or state that the right to bear arms extends beyond the home.

Before that personnel change, the court had declined at least eight opportunities to take on Scalia's challenge over the past five years. It had let stand Chicago's semiautomatic weapons ban and a variety of prohibitions against carrying guns in public, from New Jersey to California. It had refused to second-guess age limits for carrying guns in Texas and requirements for disabling or locking up guns when not in use in San Francisco.

"If New York’s regulatory scheme is allowed to stand and is copied by cities around the United States, it could undercut state economies dependent upon those tourism dollars.”

Shooting in Florida leaving five people dead

Authorities found no indication Zephen Xaver intended to rob the bank during Wednesday’s attack and no apparent connections between him and the bank or the victims, Sebring Police Chief Karl Hoglund said.

Another customer, Victor Sparks, was quoted by the Highlands News-Sun as saying that he found the door locked during the attack, peered inside and saw people lying on the floor while someone walked around and between them. He turned and stepped away and heard gunfire. He said police arrived within two minutes after he and his wife called 911.

For some reason, he “always hated people and wanted everybody to die,” Gerlach told WSBT-TV in South Bend, Indiana, near his former home in Plymouth, Indiana.

Good to know that this guy was still able to possess a gun; just imagine he hadn't been able to own a gun, he had to stab all the people in the bank, what a great mass of work to do.
